That program began on Monday.Adams signed with the Eagles after going undrafted last year and was promoted from the practice squad after Darren Sproles was injured early in the season. I like that he’s versatile (third down back skills), young (only turns 21 in two days), relatively fresh (didn’t have a huge workload at Alabama), and just overall talented. One thing that annoys me when people compare Carson Wentz against Jared Goff and Dak Prescott is that it never gets mentioned how those quarterbacks have fantastic running back talents. It’d be nice to give Wentz a really good back to work with for once. If they land Leonard Fournette via trade they can focus on adding a defensive player.Pro Football Focus (Mike Renner) - Jaylon Ferguson, DE, Louisiana TechThe Eagles add an explosive bull-rusher to supplant the league’s preeminent bull-rusher in Brandon Graham. Philly can’t let their calling card defensively start to crumble.The Athletic (Dane Brugler) - Dexter Lawrence, DT, Clemson With Haloti Ngata scheduled to be a free agent and Timmy Jernigan’s future up in the air, upgrading the interior of the defensive line is a possibility here. Lawrence is a rare mover for his size with the skills to be an above average run defender and developing pass rusher.Bleacher Report (Matt Miller) - Byron Murphy, CB, WashingtonThe Philadelphia Eagles have a solid secondary but could use help at the cornerback position, especially in the slot. Washington’s Byron Murphy is feisty, technically smooth and has shown excellent ball skills. So why is he on the board here? Teams could knock him for his lack of bulk on a 5’11” frame. Murphy has been electric the last two seasons at Washington, oftentimes showing up the teammates around him from previous draft classes. The Eagles could quickly fall in love with his playmaking skills and ability to close on the ball with special quickness and physicality.NFL Draft Scout (Rob Rang) - Devin White, LB, LSUAlong with edge rushers and wide receivers, the Eagles face big decisions at linebacker with no less than four at the position set to enter free agency, including standout middle linebacker Jordan Hicks. But the Eagles seem likely to part ways with free agent Jay Ajayi and possibly Darren Sproles, and there’s not much star power elsewhere. Jacobs wasn’t a starter at Alabama but projects as a potential every-down back in the NFL, with a hard-nosed running style and well-rounded receiving skill set.DraftWire (Luke Easterling) - Josh Jacobs, RB, AlabamaThere are bigger needs elsewhere on both sides of the ball for the Eagles, but that won’t stop them from taking one of the most dynamic playmakers in this draft if he’s still on the board. Jacobs is the total package with a lot of tread left on his tires — only 300 total touches in three years at Tuscaloosa. Top needs: OL, RB, CB.DraftTek (Broz) - Rashan Gary, DT, MichiganA few newsworthy events pertaining to the Eagles’ defense have materialized since the last CMD a week ago: 1) Safety Rodney McLeod agreed to a restructured contract, freeing up cap space and ensuring stability in the Eagles’ Safety corps, and 2) DE Chris Long, who most assumed was a goner, made remarks indicating he could be back next year. That’s good news, because while the Eagles’ defense was respectable last year (12th in NFL in PPG Allowed, 7th in Rushing YDS Allowed, 8th in league with 44 sacks), they rarely were game-changers. The defense suffered a sadistic amount of year-ending injuries which crippled the unit, but also gave some young guys in the secondary some valuable playing time. The fact that these emergency backups held Drew Brees and the Saints to 20 points in the playoffs proves that some hidden gems have been discovered. Assuming the guys on IR return (Derek Barnett, Jalen Mills, McLeod, etc), the Eagles’ defense could once again become a weapon, providing they can find another good pass rusher. Rashan Gary is one of the most interesting prospects in this draft. Going to Michigan as the unanimous top recruit in his class, he was one of the most heralded D-Line prospects in recent history. While Gary was very good for the Wolverines Reggie White Jerseys Stitched , his on-field production didn’t match the tremendous hype (9 sacks, 23 TFL in college career). Nevertheless, the ability, power, speed and raw tools are obvious. Gary’s name is frequently included in “Top 5 Players” lists, and while I would be leery of taking him that high, he is a steal at #25. The thought here is that NFL coaches will be able to unlock his potential and turn him into a pass-rushing, run-stuffing force that can play up and down a 4-man front in multiple packages. His potential is off the charts.Sporting News (Vinnie Iyer) - Dexter Lawrence, DT, ClemsonThis pick is building plenty of steam because the team’s need and the player’s skill set have started to line up so well. The Eagles could use a space-eater to flank Fletcher Cox and Lawrence is a textbook inside run-stuffer with ideal size (6-4, 351 pounds).USA Today (Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz) - Dexter Lawrence, DT, ClemsonFor all of the hand-wringing over Philadelphia’s secondary, the once-dominant defensive line didn’t create the same kind of havoc it did in the 2017 Super Bowl campaign. At 6-4 and 340 pounds, the massive Lawrence can help dissuade opponents from double-teaming Fletcher Cox regularly while he plugs the middle.Draft Countdown (Scott Wright) - Mack Wilson, LB, AlabamaIt was a nightmare season for the Eagles pass defense, which ranked 30th in the league. Philly could easily go with a cornerback or safety, although they do have some key pieces returning from injury to bolster the secondary. There is arguably even more uncertainty at linebacker, especially in the middle where the injury-prone Jordan Hicks is a free agent. The Crimson Tide always seem to have a stud inside ‘backer to anchor their defense. When Reggie Ragland went to the NFL they plugged in Reuben Foster. When Foster left it was Rashaan Evans’ turn. This year it was Mack Wilson, who very much fits within the parameters of that explosive, physical, aggressive, hard-hitting profile. The first two are on the road while the Bengals game is the home opener. These first games may be a stretch the team can take advantage of before a showdown against the New England Patriots in Week 4.Yes, the Jets got better on paper in the offseason, but there are a couple things that are working in the Bills’ favor playing them Week 1. Last year, all of the new head coaches lost in their first game of the season. The Giants may be one of the worst teams in the league this season, giving Buffalo a good opportunity to get another win in Week 2. It will be interesting to see who the quarterback will be for the Giants that second week. Will it still be Eli Manning or will first-round pick Daniel Jones already have the keys to the offense. Saquon Barkley will be a challenge but I have faith in Tremaine Edmunds and Matt Milano plugging up any holes in the middle against him. The Giants defense was in the bottom of the league last year and the team did little to address it during the off season so it may be a big day for Josh Allen.As stated above, the last of this stretch is against the Bengals in the home opener. Already the Bills have the advantage because New Era Field is always rocking—especially in the first game of the year, and hopefully with the team coming in at 2-0. There will also be extra emotion in this game as the team will be honoring beloved fan Poncho Billa—who lost his battle with cancer—before the game. It’s unknown what to expect from the Bengals this year with a new coaching staff and Andy Dalton still behind center. A.J. Bigelow played his first five seasons at USC where he redshirted his freshman year in 2013 and then missed the 2014 and 2016 seasons with serious knee injuries that caused him to ponder retirement. Mostly a rotational nose tackle who saw limited playing time with the Trojans, Bigelow earned a sixth year of eligibility from the NCAA and grad transferred to West Virginia. In his 12 starts in 2018, Bigelow earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors and was runner up for Big 12 Defensive Newcomer of the Year.I mean, just look at his first snap against Tennessee this year:When studying Bigelow, I was astounded by the first step quickness and lower body explosiveness he has for a guy with two major injuries on the same knee. While his medical history would make a team like the Jaguars hesitant to burn a draft pick on him, his upside as a rookie free agent is certainly worth the risk. Bigelow put up 31 reps on the bench at his pro day and also ran a 5.09 forty yard dash for a nose tackle.Personally, I’m a huge fan of Temple DT Michael Dogbe, who I got to check out at East-West Shrine Game, but it just doesn’t seem like Dogbe will go undrafted based on my understanding. Outside of Bigelow and Dogbe Telvin Smith Jersey , Wyoming’s Youhanna Ghaifan, a talented three-technique who declared for the draft early, can be a bargain guy who may slip out of the seven rounds due to a suspension resulting from two misdemeanors stemming from an October altercation with a hotel employee. Ghaifan has draftable tape and is worth taking a flier on.Defensive endJarrell Owens, Oklahoma StateThe Jaguars certainly will be on the hunt for depth for both the strong side defensive end position behind Calais Campbell and weak side defensive end behind Yannick Ngakoue, so it’s likely they will be active in recruiting edge rushers in rookie free agency.Oklahoma State’s Jarrell Owens is a prospect that could vie for that strong side position. A two-sport athlete at Palestine High School in Texas who played running back and defensive end in addition to basketball, Owen was clocked running a 4.70 forty (some scouts I talked to had him at 4.60) and jumping a 39” vert at his pro day – at 265 pounds. Owens is durable and has never missed a game in his Oklahoma State career and shows a good blend of speed, power, and flexibility as a pass rusher when studying his tape. Other edge rushers that may be intriguing as a rookie free agents include Tennessee’s Kyle Phillips, North Carolina’s Malik Carney, Boston College’s Wyatt Ray and UCF’s Titus Davis. Phillips fits the strong side defensive end mold while Carney, Ray, and Davis could challenge for weak side edge rusher. LinebackerTy Summers, TCUSimilar to my crush on UAB wide receiver Xavier Ubosi last week, Ty Summers is the guy I have hearts written all over my notebook on defense.It’s easy to fall in love with Summers the athlete after his impressive showing at the Combine (9.69 RAS), but you really start to get enamored with the person as well when you do research into his background.Summers played as a dual-threat quarterback on offense and safety on defense at Reagan High School in Texas. Described a “weight room animal” and reportedly running the 40 yard dash in the 4.5 range as a freshman http://www.thejaguarslockerroom.com/authentic-t.j.-yeldon-jersey , Summers spent the summer of his senior year with his high school defensive coordinator to learn about linebacker reads upon learning he would be switching to inside linebacker at TCU. A team-first guy, Summers was asked to move to defensive end in 2018 and never complained despite it affecting his stock. Summers is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and is active in the community off the field, finishing as a semifinalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award.You’re not missing anything, Evan. He’s good. It’s rare that you find a prospect who has played in all three levels on defense. Summers’ experience as a high school safety and quarterback makes him a tremendous processor in coverage as a potential WILL linebacker and his ability to blitz and rush the passer as a defensive end also makes him a great fit as a SAM linebacker for the Jaguars in addition to contributing on special teams.Hopefully a team doesn’t snatch Summers and his athletic profile on day three of the draft. Other fringe linebackers I like for depth for the Jaguars include Northern Illinois’ Sutton Smith (likely to be drafted), North Carolina’s Cole Holcomb, UTSA’s Josiah Tauaefa, and Oklahoma’s Curtis Bolton.CornerbackDuke Shelley, Kansas StateHe’s 5’9”, weighs less than 180 pounds, and doesn’t have elite timed speed. What’s not to like, right?Shelley may not check all the physical and athletic boxes that you’d like from high-upside rookie free agents, but he plays the position like a lion and showed some of the best competitive toughness that I’ve seen in scouting for this draft class. The first true freshman to start at cornerback for Bill Snyder since 2006, Shelley has 31 career pass deflection in 38 career games as a boundary corner for the Wildcats and has returned 2 of his 8 career interceptions for touchdowns. More importantly, he’s dripping with swagger. Look at the ball flip at the end as he stares at the Baylor bench. In zone, Shelley is deliberate in his decision-making to pick up his assignments and even demonstrates some nuance and baiting ability to delay his breaks. Shelley is urgent in undercutting outs and flat routes and shows great enthusiasm and courage in run support despite being undersized. Shelley projects to be a scheme transcendent nickel cornerback due to his football intelligence Womens Ronnie Harrison Jersey , ball skills, playmaking ability, and short area quickness. With D.J. Hayden’s contract structured to be a likely release candidate after 2019, Shelley would provide ideal competition with Tre Herndon to take over at nickel for the Jaguars in 2020.If the Jaguars are looking for longer boundary corners to get in the mix with Meeks, a few prospects I like are Virginia’s Tim Harris, Texas’ Davante Davis, and Kentucky’s Chris Westry. SafetyVaughnte Dorsey, Texas TechThere’s a log jam of late round safeties in this draft and a much more prominent name like Miami’s Sheldrick Redwine or Temple’s Delvon Randall may be available once the dust settles, but I’ll go a little more under the radar with Texas Tech strong safety Vaughnte Dorsey. A JUCO transfer from Gulf Coast Community College, the former high school dual-threat quarterback is a stocky striker in run support who also excels in as a mental processor in zone coverage with plus ball skills. To illustrate his ability to contribute as a balanced safety in both coverage and run support, Dorsey finished second in the Big 12 in interceptions (4) in 2018 and also had 11 tackles in one game in a great showing against Oklahoma. Dorsey also adds a wrinkle as a blitzer and does a good job of timing the snap with great closing speed and pursuit angles to run down even the best athletes at quarterback (Kyler Murray). Dorsey is an ideal scheme fit as an interchangeable safety in the Jaguars 4-3 system and could challenge C.J. If we make this pick, for once in a very long time we can say that we have the top 3 most valuable positions filled. Cajuste is the kind of nasty tackle that would fit right in on this team of “dogs.” He is no stranger to playing through the whistle. With the wingspan of a 737 MAX 8, he easily heards defenders away from the QB. He shows good balance, footwork and strength to also be plus in the run game. He has 1st round talent White Eric Tomlinson Jerseys , but there are rumblings that he is injury prone. His most recent was a torn quad. In the 3rd round, a talent like Cajuste’s is too good to pass up.Round 3 via the SaintsCB, David Long, MichiganLong does not really live up to his name. He is neither very tall, nor does he have very long arms. What he does have is the ability to play press man. In a Gregg Williams defense, that is gold. David does well to jam receivers at the line, and then mirror them in coverage. He won’t be winning many battles against the Julio Jones of the league Eric Tomlinson Jerseys 2019 , but would do just fine against everyone else. He can play outside or inside.Round 4 WR, Antoine Wesley, Texas TechWesley is one of my favorite under the radar receivers. At 6’5”, 200 lbs, he is a sizeable figure on the field. Don’t let that fool you though. He is a very polished route runner. When defenders shy away from press, he uses every inch of space they give him to make them pay. If they do have the nads to play press against him, he does well to use his hands and long strides to release and seperate. Throw in some very reliable hands White Darryl Roberts Jerseys , and you have yourself the makings of a mid round darling.Round 6RB, Devine Ozigbo, NebraskaAdding Bell gives us one of the most dominant RBs since Curtis Martin. That’s saying a lot. Behind him though, there isn’t much to get excited about. Elijah McGuire and Trenton Cannon are decent 3rd down options that are still growing. If Bell were to go down, we don’t have anyone to take early down carries or do red zone stuff. Ozigbo is a patient load. He would be wonderful in a zone scheme. If this give goes to Ty, he’s a much more physical presence than Cobb and has better instincts as a running back. For most teams this same formation would likely only have one true off-ball linebacker on the field. Instead of giving the ball, the Packers run the swing to Boykin, which works well enough. Remember how we didn’t care about the success of the first play? It’s not about the handful of yards Cobb got running it. That was to set this up. With a more explosive player making this catch, the Packers might really have something. Look how the linebackers react to the initial run fake: they fly to Cobb, leaving the sideline wide open.
