Yours truly was on SB Nation Radio with Jake Asman on Wednesday night to discuss the deal. Please give the spot a listen. Now, let’s get to some of the other Beckham-related writing. Why did the Giants do this?Jay Glazer was really the first one to foreshadow the Giants’ decision, predicting a few weeks ago that Beckham would be moved this offseason. Wednesday, he was on Sirius XM NFL Radio with hosts Alex Marvez and Charles Davis talking about the deal.Glazer said the Giants may have moved on earlier if not for coach Pat Shurmur, who wanted to make it work http://www.giantslockerroom.com/authentic-lawrence-taylor-jersey , and co-owner Steve Tisch, who “loves him.”Written accounts from Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated and Ralph Vacchiano of SNY verify and expand on what Glazer said.Breer wrote that Beckham’s quad injury, when he “he essentially shut it down for the year, when some thought he could push through” was part of the decision. New,83commentsChecking on some of the draft news we might have missed in the lead-up to draft nightEDTShareTweetShareShareDraft Notebook, 4/18 Edition - One week to go! Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY SportsThe 2019 NFL Draft is officially one week away. Teams are in the final stages of setting their draft boards and top decision makers will spend the upcoming holiday weekend discussing strategy. There have been so many rumors and news nuggets, as well as so, so Womens Carl Banks Jersey , much smoke billowing out of the various outlets that it is a bit hard to keep track of everything. So let’s take this opportunity to go back and take a second look at some of the things we might have missed for all the noise.Catching up on Dwayne Haskins Predicting who the Giants will draft at sixth overall is, as Ed has described it, a “crap shoot.” But we do know they at least appear to have done their due dilligence on the 2019 quarterback class. A huge contingent of the Giants’ top brass hit the road to watch Kyler Murray, Dwayne Haskins, Will Grier, Drew Lock, and Daniel Jones in person, then bringing them in to their facilities for Top 30 visits. The last of those visits went to Dwayne Haskins, who the Giants hosted for the draft version of a slumber party. The last day of official visits was Wednesday, April 17th, and the Giants’ leadership had dinner with Haskins on the night of the 15th before hosting him in their facilities for his official visit on the 16th. We don’t know how the Giants feel about Haskins, but he is saying all the right things. In a guest appearance on Ian Rapoport’s podcast, Haskins said that he welcomed the opportunity to sit behind Eli Manning, saying “Eli Manning is a legend. I grew up watching Eli and I’d have no problem sitting behind him and learning from him Mark Bavaro Jersey , like how I did with J.T. [Barrett] at Ohio State,” Haskins told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport on the RapSheet and Friends podcast. “Whatever team drafts me, I’ll be able to sit back and learn from the guy that’s there and be able to compete with him and push him, but know that a guy’s there because he’s a veteran, he’s done it before, he’s professional.”That has to appeal to a Giants team which is still all-in on Manning as their best option at quarterback. It also has to appeal to the local media as well. It’s fair to say that if the Giants select Haskins, it will be the Football Gods’ gift to the NYC back pages. A “local boy made good,” who went to the Giants’ youth camps after the team beat the 18-0 New England Patriots, getting to live out his dream by quarterbacking the team he grew up loving? The human-interest stories practically write themselves. Reverse draftIn a nice shake-up from the endless deluge of mock drafts that make up most of our media diet this time of year, Spencer Hall put together a “Reverse Mock Draft” over on the SB Nation main page. Essentially, it looks at the top prospects as though they were free agents who could sign wherever they wanted. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he pairs Haskins and the Giants as an “ideal” match. I would definitely encourage everyone to check out the whole piece. It’s a nice change of pace and an entertaining read.Quinnen Williams? Well, the Giants can dream, can’t they?Haskins wasn’t the only last-minute Top - 30 visit for the Giants. A day after the Giants hosted Haskins http://www.giantslockerroom.com/authentic-eli-manning-jersey , they had Alabama defensive lineman Quinnen Williams in for a visit. Quinnen Williams (as opposed to Alabama offensive tackle Jonah Williams) isn’t likely to fall to the Giants at sixth overall. He is widely regarded as one of the three best players in the draft, and commonly called the best player in the draft. But it is within the realm of possibility, and he is the one player we can say unequivocally that Dave Gettleman would draft regardless of who else is on the board.Gettleman’s draft tendenciesThere’s a reason why I say that the Giants would select Williams over any other player in this draft: Dave Gettleman loves him some defensive tackles. In a piece for The Ringer, looking at some of the biggest draft tendencies in the NFL, Robert Mays identifies the defensive line, and defensive tackle position in particular, as the apple of Gettleman’s eye. That Gettleman loves defensive linemen shouldn’t be much of a surprise as it is a trait he shares with Jerry Reese (who drafted either an offensive lineman, defensive lineman, or both in the first three rounds of eight of his eleven drafts) and both of them learned under Ernie Accorsi.

The Browns were just a kick away.Well Trey Hendrickson Jersey 2019 , maybe a few kicks, not to mention a defensive penalty that revived a New Orleans touchdown drive, as well as an interception that set up another Saints score in the waning minutes.Even with all those critical, untimely mistakes, Cleveland could have forced overtime if Zane Gonzalez had managed to compartmentalize an earlier missed field goal — and two missed extra points — when he lined up for a 52-yard try in the final seconds.Gonzalez pushed it wide, and the Browns fell 21-18 in New Orleans to extend their winless streak to 19 games.Yet the performance also demonstrated how close Cleveland is to breaking back into the win column."Our players, as I told them afterward, 'There is a good team in that (locker) room,'" Browns coach Hue Jackson said. "There is no doubt in my mind about that."We've just got to make sure we are doing the right things all of the time to give us a chance."The Browns head into Week 3 with one loss and one tie, but with reasons for optimism. They are just a few plays away from being 2-0. In Week 1, they set up for a winning field goal in overtime against Pittsburgh , only to have it blocked. The Saints (1-1), meanwhile, are evidently unsatisfied with how their season has begun. Their defense struggled in a 48-40 Week 1 loss to Tampa Bay. In Week 2, the offense managed only a field goal through three quarters and change against Cleveland before rallying for 18 points inside the final nine minutes. If not for safety Marcus Williams' interception of Tyrod Taylor with just less than five minutes to go, the Saints might have become the first team to lose to the Browns since Dec. 24, 2016."I'm encouraged we won, but let's not kid ourselves," Saints coach Sean Payton said. "We have a lot to do to improve."Some story lines emerging from New Orleans' narrow triumph over Cleveland:WILLIAMS' WAYGregg Williams White Sheldon Rankins Jersey , a the Saints defensive coordinator from 2009-11, was caught on the HBO series Hard Knocks boasting that he turned down numerous jobs to take over as defensive coordinator in Cleveland. Now everyone can see why.Drew Brees and the Saints had their hands full with a Browns defense that forced two turnovers — fumbled by receivers Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn Jr. — and came up with three drive-stalling sacks. Tackle Larry Ogunjobi sacked Brees twice, blitzing cornerback T.J. Carrie got to Brees on another third down, and Ogunjobi would have had another in the fourth quarter if not for Derrick Kindred's illegal contact penalty."He did a good job," Payton said of Williams. "They always give you challenging looks. ... They have some good young players that played well."ONE-TWO PUNCHThrough Week 2, it's apparent that the Saints are relying heavily on Thomas and running back Alvin Kamara to carry the load.Thomas had 12 catches for 89 yards and both Saints touchdowns, giving him 28 catches for 269 yards and three TDs through two games."With a player of my caliber and the guy behind center and the offensive line and all the tools around me, I'm going to catch a lot of footballs. I'm going to get open. I've been doing that my whole life," Thomas said. "So now what can I do to add value to this team and take the next step?"Kamara had 99 yards from scrimmage, including 53 receiving on six catches to go with his successful run on a 2-point conversion. Kamara now has 240 yards from scrimmage and three TDs.BIG-PLAY CALLOWAYA day after the Browns announced they were formally giving up on deep-threat receiver Josh Gordon, rookie Antonio Calloway offered evidence he could grow into a similar type of play maker, racing past the Saints' secondary for a 47-yard touchdown catch from Taylor on a fourth-and-5 play with 1:16 to go. It could have been a go-ahead score, but Gonzalez hooked the extra point wide left."Those are plays we truly believe he can make," Jackson said.HILL COUNTRYPerhaps third-string QB is the wrong title for New Orleans' Taysom Hill. He became a regular on special teams late last season on kick coverage. Against Cleveland, he debuted as kickoff returner — and there's every reason to believe he'll get another shot. After Cleveland's first three kickoffs went for touchbacks, Hill decided to return the fourth from 7 yards deep in the end zone. He burst through a seam and sprinted out of the Saints 40 before being tripped up."It was a good return," Payton said. "He's explosive." Drew Brees used one hand to hold his helmet and the other to wipe away tears. It was the first time the 39-year-old Brees had ever walked off of a football field knowing that he had thrown for more yards than any quarterback in the history of the NFL. And the Saints quarterback couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by thoughts of all the work and people who helped him get to such an esteemed point.“I broke down and cried a bunch of times this week, just thinking about so many things,” Brees said after his latest NFL-record-setting performance in a 43-19 victory over the Washington Redskins on Monday night. “I think about all the people who have influenced my life in such a powerful way Sheldon Rankins Jersey 2019 , and there were so many of those people that were here tonight, that witnessed this, so many people that I spoke to this week that are a part of this, and so many other still that I have yet to have a chance to reach out to.“Two of the people who had biggest influence on my football career certainly and on who I am, growing up, are my mom and my grandfather and they’re in heaven. They’re no longer here, but I know that they would be proud,” Brees added. The 6-foot Brees was lightly recruited out of high school in Austin, Texas, considered undersized for a quarterback at the major college and pro levels. He led Purdue to the Rose Bowl and was a Heisman Trophy finalist, but no NFL team picked him in the first round of the 2001 draft. Brees’ first team, the Chargers, discarded him after a shoulder injury in 2005, setting the stage for his arrival in New Orleans and his emergence as one of the most prolific quarterbacks ever. His latest outing would have been memorable even if no records were in play. He completed 26 of 29 passes for 363 yards and three TDs. His second touchdown was a 62-yarder to rookie Tre’Quan Smith that put Brees ahead of Peyton Manning’s previous all-time mark of 71,940 yards.Moments after that touchdown, the NFL halted the game for about three minutes so the ball could be handed over to Pro Football Hall of Fame officials. Brees was able to embrace his family and coach Sean Payton on the sideline.“It’s a beautiful thing, a beautiful experience for all of us,” said Saint left tackle Terron Armstead, the first teammate to hug Brees after the record-setting completion to Smith. “The energy in the stadium at that time White Sheldon Rankins Jersey , I thought he was going to cry, really. He’s a tough dude, he probably didn’t want to show that side. But it was an amazing experience.”Some other things to know about the Saints’ victory over Washington:RISING ROOKIESmith is a third-round draft choice out of Central Florida who, in his fifth NFL game, became immortalized for his role in Brees’ record-breaking night.“Now I get to go down in history with somebody famous in (future) Hall of Famer Drew Brees,” Smith said. “I’m glad it happened to me.”And Brees is glad to see Smith emerging into the player he showed signs of becoming in training camp. Smith finished with three catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns.“This kid could really help us, could really be a big part of our offense,” Brees said.NON-STAR TREATMENTCornerback Josh Norman is supposed to be the centerpiece for a Redskins defense that had allowed the fewest passing yards in the NFL entering the game against the Saints, but he struggled just as much as the rest of the secondary as Drew Brees threw for 250 yards in the first half.Coach Jay Gruden even benched Norman for the first series of the second half, but the move backfired when his replacement, Greg Stroman, was beaten for an easy touchdown by Smith. Norman returned on the next series.INGRAM’S BACKMark Ingram wasted little time putting his imprint on his first game back from a four-game suspension for use of a banned substance. He scored two of the Saints first three touchdowns on short runs and finished with 53 yards rushing and 20 receiving.“Just an exciting moment just being back with my teammates,” Ingram said. “Just a lot of pent-up emotion, being away from my guys, being able to come back out here. I don’t take anything about this game for granted.”PETERING OUTVeteran running back Adrian Peterson was looking resurgent coming into a game against the team that traded him away early last season. He left the Superdome with a shoulder strain and was scheduled for an MRI.Before his injury, Peterson gained 36 yards on two catches out of the backfield, but had only 6 yards rushing on four carries.___

The first installment of our ‘What If...’-series."This article is the first of a series that I will be working on this offseason: I’ll be taking a look back at some of the moments that altered the course of the Patriots franchise, and wondering what might have happened if they didn’t. I’m going to start with, arguably, the most important. The date was September 23, 2001. The country was still reeling from 9/11, and fans were just happy to get back to some normalcy after the NFL took the previous weekend off. The Patriots’ game against the Jets started with Joe Andruzzi running out of the tunnel with two American flags, and his brothers, all NY firefighters Ryan Allen Jerseys 2019 , being the honorary team captains. There was a very bittersweet feeling in the crowd, we were happy to be back at the Patriots game, but we also knew that all of our lives would be changed forever.Little did we know, Patriots games were about to change forever as well. Drew Bledsoe had just signed a 10-year, $103 million contract that offseason, and looked like he would be the Patriots starting quarterback for the rest of his career. After going 5-11 the previous season, fans were looking for the team to turn things around this season with their second-year coach, Bill Belichick. And, unbeknownst to many people, Tom Brady had worked his way from fourth string to backup QB in one season. It was an ugly game, and the Patriots were losing 10-3 to their AFC East rivals. Bledsoe threw a pair of bad interceptions, one happening in the end zone, and Marc Edwards had two fumbles, both in Jets territory. With just over five minutes left in the game, Bledsoe was forced out of the pocket and started running towards the sideline. He was being chased by Mo Lewis, and, just before he could get out of bounds, Lewis caught up to him.The hit that Lewis delivered to Bledsoe has been talked about by many of the Patriots on the sideline that day. Some say it’s the hardest they have ever heard, and I’ve even heard that Bledsoe’s facemask was actually bent in. One thing is for sure White James Develin Jerseys , Bledsoe is one of the toughest QBs in pro football history. That play happened on third down, so the Patriots had to punt, when they got the ball back, Bledsoe was the QB who went into the game.He even led the Patriots into Jets territory, before Edwards fumbled away their chance at tying the game. When the Patriots got the ball back after the Jets went three-and-out, it was Brady who would lead them onto the field. That made sense, since Bledsoe literally almost died that night. He had suffered a hemothorax, and there was blood pouring into his belly — in fact, there ended up being three liters of blood in his belly. He was in and out of consciousness during his ambulance ride to the hospital. It resulted from a blood vessel tearing in his chest, something that most doctors agree almost never happens as a result of a sports injury (there’s a fascinating Sports Illustrated article from a few years ago about how his injury has changed the way team doctors approach injuries to their players). We all know what happened after Bledsoe’s injury: Tom Brady stepped in and never looked back. The Patriots, thanks, in part, to Bledsoe coming off the bench in the AFC Championship Game, won Super Bowl 36, and five more since. But what would have happened if Bledsoe never went down?I don’t think it’s reasonable to assume that Brady would’ve ended up starting a game in 2001. I know that some people (my dad included), feel that Brady was going to take over in 2001 no matter what, but I just find it hard to believe. Forget the fact that Bledsoe had signed the richest deal in NFL history that offseason and had been the starting QB since being drafted first overall in 1993. The team loved Bledsoe. He was a leader in the locker room, and one of the most respected players on the team. Even to this day, with Brady being the QB that won them the Super Bowl James Develin Jerseys 2019 , the majority of the members of that 2001 team still consider it to be Bledsoe’s team. I can’t imagine having a squad made up of mostly veterans and pulling the plug on your starter mid-season.Without Brady as the starter, would the Patriots have been even close to the team they ended up being? There’s no way to know for sure, but I don’t think so. Primarily because I think Brady was better equipped to run Belichick’s offense. He was willing to take the short, check-down passes that the offense is built on, whereas Bledsoe was more of a gunslinger, looking at his downfield reads first. This doesn’t mean that he couldn’t be good in that system (although his completion percentage was well below 60% the year before), but there’s a real chance they may not have made the playoffs, never mind winning the Super Bowl.So let’s turn our attention to the offseason. Would Belichick have made the decision to move on from Bledsoe and insert Brady as the starter before the 2002 season? Brady’s contract ran through 2003, but Bledsoe had an option before the 2002 season that would’ve allowed the Patriots to cut him without suffering much of a penalty. The problem is that the rest of the NFL still thought highly of Bledsoe, and, if there’s one thing Belichick prides himself on, it’s maximizing his assets. So maybe Belichick would’ve traded Bledsoe during the offseason and moved on with Brady. Here’s the problem with that: as I already said, Bledsoe was one of the most respected guys in the locker room, and they would not have been happy if Bledsoe had been shipped off in favor of some sixth round pick. They would’ve gotten over it, and been just fine, but one would imagine that the chemistry in the locker room would be far different if that is how the Bledsoe to Brady transition had happened. Would they have been as galvanized and close-knit as they would become? As I said, there’s no way to know, but it’s hard to believe they would have. One thing that I think is reasonable to assume is that Belichick would eventually have moved on from Bledsoe in favor of Brady. If you don’t believe that, let’s go back to Cleveland Infant Byron Cowart Jersey , where he cut hometown hero Bernie Kosar just five weeks after signing a 5-year, $37 million contract extension. Yes, Bledsoe had signed the richest deal in NFL history before the 2001 season, but, as with most NFL contracts, it wasn’t that simple. There were multiple option years, where the Patriots could cut Bledsoe at very little cost to them, including one after the first season of the contract. All of those signs point to the Patriots being able to move on from Bledsoe fairly easily. But what if he didn’t? What if he thought Bledsoe was good enough that he had to move on from Brady, kind of like how he moved on from Jimmy Garoppolo? I find it highly unlikely that would have been the case, but both of these greats would be so very different. Belichick is the best coach ever, and Brady is the best player ever, but they both benefited so much from having the other. Would they have been able to reach the heights they have without one another? There are many people that have many different opinions on how things would’ve turned out if Bledsoe had been healthy the entire 2001 season, and they’re all pretty valid. Maybe there’s an alternate universe where Bledsoe stayed healthy, and these questions would all be answered. I’m just happy I live in a world where we never had to find out.If you have any ‘What If’s...’ you’d like to see, or one that you’ve often thought about, be sure to comment here, or tweet at us! Today’s player interview is Toledo wide receiver Diontae Johnson. The Colts could use a slot receiver along with a special teams ace and Johnson fits the bill in both of those areas. The interview will be towards the bottom of the page T.Y. Hilton Jersey 2019 , as he interviewed exclusively with Stampede Blue to talk about playing alongside Cody Thompson and Jon’Vea Johnson, what makes a great route runner, and how he’d like playing with Andrew Luck and T.Y Hilton.BackgroundSize:5’10” 183 poundsMeasurables: 40 Time: 4.53 / 10-yard split: 1.59 / Bench Reps: 15 Reps / Vertical Jump: 33.5 inches / Broad Jump: 125 inches / 3-Cone: 7.09 secondsCareer Stats:135 catches for 2,235 yards and 23 touchdowns. 78 kick returns for 1,826 yards and 2 touchdowns. 17 punt returns for 343 yards and 2 touchdowns in his career. Round Projection:Rounds 4-5Fit with the Colts:Johnson may not have the greatest size or athleticism, but he makes up for that with his versatility and nuance. Johnson is an excellent route runner who excels at winning at the line of scrimmage and working his way open. He is also a dangerous return man, and would give the Colts a much needed boost in this area. If the Colts want to upgrade their slot from Chester Rogers, grabbing Diontae Johnson in the middle rounds would be a great investment. Film Room:The first things that pop are Johnson's release at the line and his route running. He is really advanced in these two areas of his game.Johnson has the deep play ability and after the catch ability to be a big play threat, as well. The return game, however, is where Johnson truly shines. He could be one of the best returners in the league one day. Johnson was one of the top returners in college.InterviewZH: You were a talented player in Florida during your high school career. What went into the decision to attend Toledo?DJ: Coach Candle was the coach at the time, and he came and found me at one of my games that I did real well. I didn’t really know much about the school until I went on a visit. I liked the area and the coaching staff and I felt like it was the right place for me to be at. Toledo stuck with me through everything and stuff like that.ZH: You played alongside two talented receivers in Cody Thompson and Jon’Vea Johnson at Toledo. What was it like to be in such a talented receiver room?DJ: It was good, because we were able to learn from each other. Obviously, we have different playing styles, but just to be able to sit in the film room with them and pick each other’s brains and let each other know what we did wrong here and there was just a good experience. Not too many people get that experience, to be apart of something like that White Pat McAfee Jersey , and it was just great, man.ZH: Would you say that you guys were the best receiving trio in college football?DJ: Yeah no doubt, hands down. The numbers we put up and things we did as a group, I feel like nobody is ever going to do what we did again in my opinion. ZH: Where would you say is your best fit in the NFL? In the slot or on the outside?DJ: I would say slot because of the matchup mismatches and what not. I can play both in or out because I’m so versatile and I have the ability to do just about anything my coaches ask of me.ZH: You were an outstanding special teams player in your career. Do you think that is an area that you can immediately contribute at in the NFL? DJ: Oh yeah, certainly. Just what I can do with the ball in my hand and being able to play kick returner or punt returner gives me a boost for teams. A lot of teams are really high on me because of my ability as a receiver, and that ability to play special teams. I feel like I can come in and help a team out real fast on special teams, and that is really what I want to play. After that, if I get a chance to play offense, I can show what I can do on that side of the ball as well.ZH: I like to ask this of a lot of receivers I interview. What is the key to be a great route runner? What makes a guy elite in this area of their game?DJ: You gotta be able to win at the line of scrimmage. That is where the play starts. If you can’t win at the line of scrimmage, then the route is dead. Obviously, you gotta be able to run every route in the route tree and have good hands, but you gotta win at the line of scrimmage, because that is where the play starts at. ZH: Who in the NFL do you model your game after/compare yourself to?DJ: I watch Stefon Diggs a lot. Just the way he comes out of his breaks, and gets off of the line, and catches the ball in traffic, I really try to model my game after him. Being that we are the same height— he weighs a little bit more than me— I would say that our games are pretty similar and I compare myself to him.ZH: These last two are going to be Colts centered questions. First Pat McAfee Jersey 2019 , how cool would it be to get the chance to play alongside T.Y Hilton and Andrew Luck if Indy were the team that drafted you?DJ: It would be a great experience for me. Just being able to play with those type of guys who have had great success would give me a chance to soak up as much information as I can to better my game. The ability to learn under T.Y Hilton— that is another one of the receivers I model my game after— and playing with a guy like that would really help me. To learn from a guy like that and take the little techniques he has and apply it to my game would just be awesome. ZH: What is my team getting if they spend a draft pick on you in this draft? What separates you from other receivers in this class?DJ: Just my versatility. I can play both in and out and even special teams too. A lot of receivers in this draft don’t play special teams, they are just receivers. I feel like I have the upper hand on them because I can play special teams and receiver. There aren’t too many people that can do things with the ball in their hand like I can and make people miss like I can. I’m just being humble about it but I just feel like I’m better than anybody they compare me to. Sam Darnold remembers sitting at home in Southern California watching Andrew Luck sling the football all over the fields of the Pac-12 for Stanford. The young quarterback was a freshman in high school in 2012, when Luck became the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft and the future of the franchise for the Indianapolis Colts.More than six years later, Darnold is in the same spot with the New York Jets. And, now he'll get a chance to face Luck on the same field Sunday."From watching him in the past, first of all he's such a bright dude in general and you can see how he takes that to the football field," Darnold said Wednesday. "So it's really cool to be able to watch him play."While Luck is 29 and Darnold just 21, there are some comparisons when it comes to poise and calm under fire that are strong attributes of both quarterbacks. They are also the respective faces of their franchises, and Darnold has seen Luck deal with that responsibility over the past few years."To see him get drafted and to see what he's been able to do for the Colts and to see what he's been able to do for that organization, yeah, he's been banged up, but he's a great player," Darnold said."We know our defense has their hands full, but it's also going to be a dogfight for us, too, because they have a great defense. We're really looking forward to the challenge though White Peyton Manning Jersey , knowing how great of a quarterback Andrew is."Luck missed all of last season with a shoulder injury and has been thrust right back into running the pass-heavy offense of the Colts . The veteran threw 121 passes in a five-day span last week in losses to Houston and New England, appearing at times as though he never missed a beat. The Colts quarterback is also known to be able to make plays with his feet while playing smartly — characteristics that have some comparing Darnold to Luck."Yeah, he definitely has more years of experience, but I can see it," Darnold said. "He likes to extend plays, but at the same time he likes to just hang in there and deliver the ball on time and accurately. Yeah, I can see some similarities."Colts coach Frank Reich knows a lot about the quarterback position, having played in the NFL for 14 years — many of them as the backup to Jim Kelly in Buffalo. He, too, sees some of the same things others have been saying about Darnold and Luck."It feels like to me a little bit of the same personality," Reich told reporters during a conference call. "It's not too big from the standpoint of not only intellectually, but just for lack of a better word 'emotionally.' It's not too big. The game's not too big."And physically, being able to make the throws and some of the athleticism."Darnold didn't necessarily model himself after Luck, but he saw plenty of the former Cardinal quarterback playing his USC Trojans while he was growing up."That was when (Jim) Harbaugh was doing his thing with Andrew," Darnold said. "I got to watch him a lot and how they dominated for a little bit up there in the north. It was really fun to watch and really cool to see Andrew Luck dissect defenses at such a young age. It was really fun and kind of inspiring to me."Darnold has had an up-and-down first five games of his NFL career. He has seven touchdown passes and six interceptions, and his 55.7 percent completion rate and 77.2 quarterback rating rank near the bottom of the league. But Peyton Manning Jersey 2019 , both coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates have been happy with Darnold's consistent progress during the early part of the season. In New York's 34-16 win over Denver last Sunday , Darnold threw three TD passes, including a perfectly placed 76-yard TD toss to Robby Anderson that showed the young QB can stretch the field a little, too."I feel good every week," Darnold said. "For me, especially at this position and at this high of a level, you've just got to really just stay the course."NOTES: RB Isaiah Crowell did not practice because of what Bowles said was a "sore" ankle. Crowell was selected as the AFC's offensive player of the week after rushing for a franchise-record 219 yards last Sunday. ... CB Trumaine Johnson (quadriceps), CB Buster Skrine (concussion), WR-KR Andre Roberts (elbow/foot), C Spencer Long (knee/finger), LB Kevin Pierre-Louis (foot) and WR Charone Peake (hamstring) also didn't practice. Bowles ruled out Peake for the game against Indianapolis. ... WR Terrelle Pryor (groin), S Marcus Maye (ankle/foot) and TE Neal Sterling (concussion) were all limited.

Both players, and Rogers, are able to sign offer sheets from other teams. However, the Colts would be entitled to a second-round pick in return should they decide not to match any signed offer sheet. The Colts could have elected to use the cheaper original round tender worth $2.025 million on either Farley or Boehm. He is very raw as a player but is still hard to cover. He drew numerous pass interference penalties because he was so difficult to play against. He is tall, fast, quick, and can jump over you. He would be a monster for any NFL CB to cover even as he is now. He has strong hands and has made numerous one-handed catches. He has a huge catch radius and super loose hips to get in and out of breaks smoothly. He would be great with back shoulder throws. Once he gets up to speed a CB would have to get on his horse and in no way be able to cover the back shoulder of Boykin. His sheer size makes him a box out candidate on most throws. On this route he just basically runs by the DBs, not showing a lot of trickery. He gets turned around enough to get himself square to the QB. When he reaches up the CB tries to jump and deflect the throw, but he is a good half foot away from the ball. If he was more schooled in receiving he would have slowed down and stacked the CB on his back, then reached up and grabbed the pass...but this worked. This is another play that doesn’t take much route knowledge. He again just runs by the CB and catches a TD Trumaine Johnson Jerseys 2019 ,At the top of the screen you can see the CB is in press coverage and doesn’t even lay a finger on Boykin on his release. Once he crosses his face, the CB is burnt. The QB has a straight shot to Boykin, and as long as he can get the ball long enough it’s a TD.This next GIF is what I was talking about earlier. The ball is late, but still this back shouler throw is deadly because of the speed of the receiver. The CB never knows the ball is coming. He can’t get his head around to see the ball.If Boykin runs hard down the sideline, and the QB is accurate and on time with his throw as long as Boykin doesn’t stop or look back prematurely this play is unstoppable in a one on one scenario. These next few GIFs will show you how size matters to a receiver. Remember Boykin isn’t just tall. He is like trying to tackle a moose when he is squared up, and his momentum is vertical. He blasts through those arm tackles like they are nothing. CBs will have a difficult time tackling Boykin unless they go low and take out the legs. The next clip is spectacular because of the catch.Again there is no CB who can cover this play because of the size of Boykin. Here is the same play from another angle. This play starts with 1 minute 38 seconds left in the game and Notre Dame trailing by 3 in the Citrus Bowl. Notre Dame won the game because of this play 21-17. Size matters. The only reason that Notre Dame was even in the position to make a game changing play is because of this nice catch on a 3rd and 19 play with Notre Dame down 14 to 6.He powered through press man coverage and held onto the ball after taking a big hit. The player #25, by the way, is Greedy Wiliams who should be a late 1st round selection in a few days. He only had 3 receptions in this game, and you saw two of them. These were enough to get him the Citrus Bowl MVP for the game. Here is another TD on a ball that is thrown way too late. The only nuance to this route is the jab step left that backs the defender off and gives him the room and time to get outside all alone. The late throw is the only reason you see the CB even close to the play. Boykin does a nice job of catching the ball with his hands and away from his body. He also turned to give his QB a big target to throw at.So far you can see that Boykin has made all his plays with his physical prowess without any real skill involved. This last clip he shows you some forethought Boykin shows while running this route.Stanford is playing a cover 2 zone. The play is designed to bring the slot receiver into the flat to occupy #13 the right corner so he doesn’t drop back on the play. The ILB #27 Sean Barton drops back into the passing lane with the safety #5 Frank Buncom playing the deep right quarter of the field. The hole in the zone is on the sideline about 20 yards downfield. It’s a rhythm throw as Boykin has to get there as the QB arcs the ball over #25 and onto Boykin. Again it’s nice to be tall. This was a big play with only about a minute left in the half. There you have it. Boykin has all kinds of physical talent, but he has not to this point developed into a efficient, skilled receiver; and you have to wonder why not?He only played in 26 college games, starting in only half of them. He has no idea how to read a defense White Terrelle Pryor Sr. Jerseys , work a CB or even basic nuances of route running yet he still caught 59 ball and had 8 TDs; all with very poor QB play. He makes contested catches, receptions where he gets hit soundly and still holds onto the ball. He would be a red zone target right away for any team, and if he can develop you have a game breaker. So what do you think? And as always GO JETS When the agent for Vikings free agent linebacker Anthony Barr got on the phone to tell his client about a five-year, $75 million deal with the Jets, it was supposed to be a celebration. But Barr didn’t see it that way, with immediate hesitation that led him to back out on the deal a day later and return to the Vikings.Agent Ryan Williams told ESPN that he could sense Barr’s lack of enthusiasm over what appeared to be a winning lottery ticket.“He said, ‘I feel like I just made the worst mistake of my life,'” Williams said.Because the negotiations happened during the tampering window, Barr couldn’t sign anything anyway until Wednesday. So after the Jets made their offer, which seemed agreed upon, Barr’s second thoughts led his agent to ask the Vikings for a last-ditch chance to keep one of their defensive cornerstones, which came in that Monday night. Tuesday would be decision day.“I was up for all morning Terrelle Pryor Sr. Jerseys 2019 , just looking at my ceiling, just looking for a sign,” Barr said. “Talking to everybody, trying to figure something out. . . .“I was trying to convince myself of something I knew that in my heart didn’t feel right, and I think if you follow the heart, I can live with the results.”It’s not that Barr’s doing poorly with the Vikings, signing a five-year deal with $67.5 million, with $33 million in guarantees. It’s $1.5 million a year less than he’d have made in New York, but that didn’t stop a family celebration that included margaritas, tacos, and tears.“It happened the minute he said I’m going to go back [to Minnesota],” his mother Lori said. “There were tears. It was pure elation — relief White Rishard Matthews Jerseys , appreciation, feeling valued, feeling reconnected. Just a range of emotions but mostly just sincere happiness that he was getting to go back to where he got to start it all and be with the people he loves to be with, with the organization, in a city he really enjoys and has now become his second home. It just really made waiting and not knowing worth it.”The Jets said they understood the business, and wanted guys who were all-in. And the Vikings benefitted from the time built into the system, for Barr to realize the place he was all-in was the place he already was.

Behind their running game and with some inspiration from the ’68 team that they are honoring this weekend, they take it.<em>Pick: New York Jets (-2.5)</em>Cleveland (-1.5) vs. Los Angeles ChargersI like Cleveland Orange Chris Hubbard Jersey , but I like this Chargers team more. They avenge the 2016 loss in Cleveland by taking this one.<em>Pick: Los Angeles Chargers (+1.5)</em>Cincinnati (-1.5) vs. PittsburghWhenever these two get together, there’s going to be some nastiness involved. The Bengals have lost their last 6 games to the Steelers, but that ends here.<em>Pick: Cincinnati (-1.5)</em>Seattle (-2.5) vs. OaklandGames played in London are always a crapshoot, but the Raiders have so many question marks.<em>Pick: Seattle (-2.5)</em>Atlanta (-3) vs. Tampa BayMatt Ryan should have a monster day as Tampa Bay continues their fall back down to Earth.<em>Pick: Atlanta (-3)</em>Los Angeles Rams (-7) vs. Denver The Rams are the best team in football.<em>Pick: Los Angeles Rams (-7)</em>Baltimore (-2.5) vs. TennesseeThe Titans have quietly gone 12-1 in their last 13 home games, and the Ravens are playing their 3rd straight road game.<em>Pick: Tennessee (+2.5)</em>Jacksonville (-3) vs. DallasIf you like offense…. don’t tune in to this one.<em>Pick: Jacksonville (-3)</em>New England (-3.5) vs. Kansas CityIf Patrick Mahomes & the Chiefs pull this one out, I will be very Chris Hubbard Jersey 2019 , very impressed. That being said, Brady & Co. deserve the benefit of the doubt.<em>Pick: New England (-3.5)</em>Green Bay (-9.5) vs. San FranciscoThe Packers have had a really odd start to their season. Both of these teams haven’t shown much, but the home team <em>needs</em> this one. After next week’s bye, they play back-to-back road games against the Rams and Patriots. Ouch.<em>Pick: Green Bay (-9.5)</em> When Hue Jackson and Todd Haley got fired, the Browns apparently got rid of a solid chunk of the playbook along with them. In week 10 against the Atlanta Falcons, interim offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens showcased a more streamlined Orange Terrance Mitchell Jersey , pared-down playbook. The Browns ran exclusively zone-blocked running plays against the Falcons (with the exception of Draw plays), and the result was a team that was better prepared to execute. By focusing on one blocking pattern, the Browns were able to eliminate miscommunications and get RB Nick Chubb to daylight.Another benefit of streamlining the running game was that the Browns were able to hit on some very effective play action fakes, including a screen pass to Chubb that went for a touchdown. Here’s my breakdown of Chubb’s TDs:Here’s an old article explaining why focusing on the zone running game is a good idea, and here’s another explaining a little more about Outside Zone.

That could happen next month, but is more likely in 2020.The 36-year-old Fitzpatrick has a 50-75-1 record as a starter for seven NFL teams. He started seven games for Tampa Bay last year and had a passer rating of 100.4, which ranked ninth in the league. The Dolphins traded Tannehill on Friday to the Tennessee Titans in a deal that also involved draft picks. Tannehill became Miami’s starting quarterback as a rookie in 2012 and never took a snap in the postseason. After Miami went 7-9 last year, owner Stephen Ross fired coach Adam Gase, ordered a youth movement and acknowledged it may take several seasons to build a winner.Fitzpatrick could become Miami’s 20th starting quarterback since Dan Marino retired following 1999 season. The Dolphins and new coach Brian Flores have the 13th choice in the April draft, and might devote their first-round pick to a QB for only the second time since taking Marino in 1984.Fitzpatrick has thrown for 190 touchdowns and 29,357 yards, but has been inconsistent and turnover-prone. He entered the league in 2005, and his longest stay with any team was with the Buffalo Bills in 2009-12.He had four 400-yard passing games last year for the Buccaneers but yielded the starting job to Jameis Winston in November.Fitzpatrick joins two other quarterbacks on the Miami roster, Luke Falk and Jake Rudock. Neither has started in the NFL.With moves made since the hiring of Flores, the Dolphins are given a 200-1 chance to win next season’s Super Bowl, worst in the NFL. A poor record would mean a high first-round draft pick in 2020, and they’re well-positioned to splurge in free agency a year from now. They’re still in the market this offseason for help on the offensive and defensive lines and at cornerback.

Laken Tomlinson Jersey

Will Giants end up with higher draft pick than 49ers? The New York Giants were thumped in Week 6 Laken Tomlinson Jersey , losing 34-13 to the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday Night Football. Rookie running back Saquon Barkley is looking like the real deal, but there are few other positives about the team. Odell Beckham Jr. remains an incredibly talented receiver, but Eli Manning is dragging this team down in a big way.The Giants dropped to 1-5 with the loss, and until Sunday, have the worst record in the NFL. Entering the week, the Giants were tied with the San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta Falcons, Arizona Cardinals, Oakland Raiders, and Indianapolis Colts. Prior to TNF, Football Outsiders listed the Cardinals with the best odds for the top pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, followed by the 49ers, Buffalo Bills, Raiders, and then Giants. FO’s odds use a variety of factors and simulations.Meanwhile, the folks at MyBookie are offering a 49ers-specific look at the draft order. Entering TNF, they presented the wager, “Which team will record the better record by the end of the 2018 NFL Regular Season?” The Giants were a slim favorite at -125, with the 49ers at -105. That line will change with the Giants loss and then whatever happens on Monday for the 49ers.The 49ers and Giants square off on Monday Night Football in Week 10. The 49ers have their bye after the game, while the Giants play the game coming off their bye. Since it is on Monday, the game cannot be flexed out of primetime. It’s a shaky contest with Jimmy Garoppolo hurt and Eli Manning playing with a fork sticking out of his back, but there is tremendous potential value in draft pick projections. The 1-5 Giants travel to Atlanta next week and then host Washington before their bye. I don’t think anybody would be surprised to see New York sitting at 1-7 for this game, although I think they beat Washington and are 2-6.Meanwhile, the 1-4 49ers travel to Green Bay this weekend, host the Los Angeles Rams Dee Ford Jersey , travel to Arizona, and host Oakland. They likely lose the next two games to drop to 1-6, but Oakland and Arizona are toss-ups at this point. Yes, the 49ers lost at home to Arizona last week, but given how that game played out, the game in Glendale is very winnable. I think there’s a decent chance they’re 3-6, but this team is proving things could go south in a hurry. The team also confirmed the signing of former Rice RB Austin Walter"The San Francisco 49ers today announced they have signed LB LaRoy Reynolds to a one-year deal. The team also confirmed the signing of former Rice running back Austin Walter. To get back to a 90-man roster, the 49ers waived defensive lineman Ryan Delaire in a corresponding move. Delaire was originally signed to the 49ers practice squad on September 26, 2018 and was promoted to San Francisco’s active roster on October 6, 2018. He appeared in one game prior to being waived on October 15. Delaire re-signed to the team’s practice squad on October 17 and was promoted to the active roster on December 29, 2018.We spoke about Walter yesterday. Here’s the press release from the team on Reynolds:Reynolds (6-1, 240) originally signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent on May 3, 2013. Over the past six seasons with the Jaguars (2013-15), Chicago Bears (2015), Atlanta Falcons (2016-17) and Philadelphia Eagles (2018), he has appeared in 84 games (seven starts) and registered 59 tackles, two fumble recoveries and one pass defensed on defense to go along with 43 tackles and two fumble recoveries on special teams. He also appeared in seven career postseason contests and registered one tackle on defense as well as four tackles and two fumble recoveries on special teams. In 2018 with Philadelphia, he appeared in all 16 games and ranked second on the team with nine tackles on special teams. He also appeared in two postseason games and registered one tackle on both defense and special teams. A 28-year-old native of Norfolk, VA, Reynolds spent four seasons (2009-12) at the University of Virginia. With the Cavaliers, he appeared in 45 games and earned All-ACC Honorable Mention honors as a senior in 2012 after finishing with 90 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, four passes defensed and 1.0 sack.

With this being the 100th Bears season, it would seem fitting that we rank the 100 best Bears players of all time.Soon a team of volunteers for this was formed: myself, Jeff Berckes, who was as enthusiastic as me about the idea, historian Jack Silverstein, top boss Lester A. Wiltfong Jr., Optimist Prime Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter and film expert Jacob Infante. Then it came time to work up a methodology. We decided a vote would be good, but I had to turn to Jeff, our analytics man, to concoct a weighted system that would fairly balance out our personal bias and allow for a more complete list.Creating a list of the Top 100 players in Chicago Bears history is at best an imperfect science. The top of any list will feature the game’s best, players that transformed the game or defined their position, playing at peak levels for long periods of time. After that wave of transcendence, voters may go in different directions, balancing shorter careers with high peaks against long and solid careers with no discernible peaks. Post season honors, team success or lack thereof, games and years played, championships won, and statistical accumulation are just some of the factors that can weigh into an evaluation. Only one grading principle was agreed upon at the start – players should be compared to how they performed in their era against other players from their era. In other words, a more modern player may be athletically superior to a historic player but he should only be judged at his level of competition.Development of the list was an iterative process involving ten rounds of voting. A list of eligible players was collected and added to a player pool from a variety of sources. In the first round, the WCG contributors ranked the top 15 players in the history of the Chicago Bears using their own individual evaluation metrics. The votes were scored (1st place vote = 15 points, 15th place vote = 1 point) and added together to create a raw score. A weighted average was calculated by taking the total score multiplied by the number of ballots the player appeared on, divided by the number of possible ballots. This weighted score was used in situations to help “break ties” where scores were approximately equal. The top ten vote-getters from the first round were recorded in their respective ranks and cleared from the player pool. The voters repeated this process for a total of 10 rounds until a top 100 list was created. After allowing the dust to settle on the list, the group deliberated on any glaring issues including whether a player was ranked too high or too low or whether or not a snubbed player deserved inclusion. After reaching consensus, mostly minor alterations were made and the list was finalized. An important note - while it was not a written rule, there were enough contributors that considered the impact of players with fewer than 3 years of service to not be eligible for this list. That means current players like Eddie Jackson and Khalil Mack will not be on the list despite the likelihood of their inclusion in a list like this down the road.We also agreed that a players’ contributions mattered to their Bears playing career only. That means that there could be no inserting of “what ifs” for players such as Greg Olsen, Thomas Jones and Orlando Pace. Each a great player, but their contributions in Chicago were short and in the case the former two, great, while the latter was great elsewhere first but disappointing here. That also means that the coaching career of Mike Ditka was not to be weighed and George Halas’ importance as owner, coach and founder were also set aside in favor of only his playing days. This means that ours differs from the Bears’ own list Gale Sayers Jersey , which includes both Mack and Jackson and could very well have Ditka and Halas higher than we do (that’s a teaser, not a spoiler). Other than that, there will be some similarities and differences. It’s not meant to be gospel. This is meant to be, as all lists are, the writers’ rankings, but we’re damn proud of this list, a LOT of emails, a lot of good debate, a lot of consensus, a lot of dissent and plenty of stats and more went into this.We wanted this list to not just represent the six of us, but the site, the fans and most importantly, the deep and rich history of the greatest and oldest professional football franchise in the National Football League. Stay tuned for tomorrow and each week after, as we reveal the list 10 at a time. There will also be more articles surrounding the list, regarding snubs, honorable mentions, players that an individual writer thought should have been ranked higher or lower, etc. It’s going to be a fun thing to fill the gap until training camp. You can check out our countdown to number one by clicking right here. Ryan Pace has a tendency to make aggressive deals. He doesn’t always make the best decisions, but his decisions are consistently guided by an understandable principle."It all comes down to Saturday morning cartoons. Younger readers might struggle with the concept, but people of my generation will remember a time that cartoons were only really available at a special time--Saturday morning. I have specific memories of waking up to be sure that I did not miss an episode of my favorite show, and I recall vividly the overwrought frustration I felt when a family trip or event like a wedding prevented me from being able to watch Scooby Doo or Thunderbirds 2086 or whatever other magical entertaining I was captivated by that year.My children, on the other hand, do not know what it means to have to ‘wait’ for a show to be available. Oh, they understand that there are rules about how much television they get to watch, and they feel their own forms of frustration, but the opportunity to watch cartoons has gone from being a rare thing specific to particular times of the week to a surplus of options, regulated only by parental discipline.Opportunity, in other words, has lost its meaning to my children when it comes to cartoons. There are NFL fans who also fail to appreciate opportunity.Opportunity in the draftIt’s mock draft season, and while the Bears are more or less “out” of mock drafts this year http://www.thebearslockerroom.com/authentic-mike-singletary-jersey , it’s still easy to find fans of almost every team suggesting a dozen trades, where somehow a sixth-rounder, a future fourth-rounder, and a veteran backup guard are flipped and maneuvered into a pair of third-round picks that snag an all-star running back and an edge rusher who will probably be gone by Pick #40, anyway. Why do fans believe that this is what can and should happen? Because they read on a chart somewhere that it is possible, or out of 100 iterations of a draft simulator programmed to keep things exciting, they were offered a similar trade at least one time. They assume that ‘vaguely possible’ means the opportunity is always there. Over the years, I have leveled many criticisms at Ryan Pace, but the one thing that is obvious about him is that he understands the cost of opportunity.Let’s look at Ryan Pace’s most famous deal, the maneuvering to get Mitchell Trubisky. A rational fan (if that’s not an oxymoron) will admit that the verdict is still out on Trubisky. However, Ryan Pace did not “give up” three picks to draft Trubisky. Instead, he paid three picks (a third, a fourth, and a future third) to either guarantee the opportunity to make the selection or to deny others the same chance. To put it another way, if I am crossing my home state of South Dakota and I find my car running low on fuel, I might find myself stopping at a gas station on a highway (likely the only gas station around on that stretch of highway) and paying whatever number happens to be on the pump. I might pay more than I would have had I planned ahead and filled my tank where I knew there was cheaper gas, and I will almost certainly pay more than if I waited until I reached my destination and had a choice of stations in competition for my business. Any halfway competent student of economics understands that I am not just paying for the fuel itself. Instead, I am paying for the opportunity to have access to fuel when I want or need it, under the conditions I want it. This, in turn, rewards the owner of the gas station who planned ahead for how others would value that situation and so on. Back to Ryan Pace--he believed that there were only a couple of stations that sold the grade of fuel the Bears needed. He wanted to be sure he got the best available fuel. He then paid what he needed to pay to guarantee himself that opportunity. Critics will say he should have waited to see if he even needed to pay the increased price (i.e. maybe the next exit would have had fancy no-look pumps available). I have made that decision on road trips, only to find that the next exit is closed, or that the gas station I thought was there had gone out of business. On multiple occasions when needing fuel, I have also passed by gas stations, annoyed at the price on the pump, only to find as I have traveled that the price per gallon is higher at the next station instead of lower.Looked at through the lens of opportunity, the cost of trading draft picks makes sense. I generally agree with those who want to trade back and maximize the number of picks, because I think selling opportunity tends to get better results. However, it is ridiculous to think that opportunity should not have a cost.Consider the much simpler Anthony Miller trade. He wanted a receiver of Anthony Miller’s talent and potential, and he wanted him in 2018 Womens Dick Butkus Jersey , when he could grow with the new coach and the new system. The price of that player was a second-rounder, but the Bears did not have one to send at that moment, having spent theirs on James Daniels. The surcharge on get that ‘extra’ second-round selection (the extra price at the pump because they were at a solitary gas station in the middle of nowhere) was a fourth-rounder.Time and again, Pace pays the cost to get himself the opportunities he wants. Most mathematical models tell us he is going to be in the wrong over time. Consistently trading up is a way to lose out on value. However, if he finds better-than-expected results consistently in the draft (and that’s a big if, still), then he is leveraging opportunity well.Using the draft to buy opportunityKhalil Mack is a dominant football player, but is a single year of Khalil Mack worth two first round picks (with a bunch of other stuff floating around)? No. It’s not. How could it be, especially when that year is not being had on a price-controlled contract like a true first-round draft pick would be? Advanced analytics seemed to like the Raiders’ side of the equation, and despite the Bears’ 12-4 season, there seem to be plenty who are willing to criticize Pace’s aggression. This is so absurd it merits a painfully careful response.Pace didn’t buy a single year of Khalil Mack. When Pace traded for Mack, he was really buying the opportunity to sign Mack to a long-term contract and to deny others that opportunity. He then had to pay for a premium edge-rusher, and that was expensive (around $141 million dollars). However, the draft picks were not paid for the services of Khalil Mack. That’s what the contract was for. The draft picks were the price attached to the opportunity to offer that contract. This is where football fans traditionally want to have it both ways. They want their GM to get second-round picks for halfbacks who went to the Pro Bowl once as an alternate, but they also want their GMs to pay only a future seventh-rounder for moving up sixty spots to select the guard that the team needs.Do deals like this sometimes happen? Yes. And sometimes when you are lucky, you will pass up a gas station and find a cheaper price at a more convenient exit later on. It’s just not a guaranteed opportunity. When I was a little kid, I could have slept in and missed my favorite show. I could have hoped then that it would be on again in a rerun. However, I would have missed out on the enjoyment of seeing it that morning and of talking about it with my friends (i.e. Pace could have missed out on a 12-4 season with a new coach), and I also would have been gambling that it could be available again in the future (i.e. that another pass-rusher would be available for those picks in the future).Because of the way technology has advanced, there is no longer an urgency to getting up on Saturday morning for cartoons. Likewise, for fans who look back a year after a draft, it is easy to say “this is the player who should have been taken” or “the GM should have waited.” The reality is that in the moment, the opportunity to watch your favorite cartoon (or, more importantly, to fill your car’s tank) is not guaranteed. Pace seems to be trying to aggressively take opportunities. I do not always agree with his decisions, but it would be foolish for me to pretend his decisions ‘obviously wrong’ given what he cannot know about future chances to improve the team.
