Enough offensive linemen for several teams, a new-look receiver room, and a potential monster to man the middle of the defense all have us dreaming big. Deep down, though, everyone knows that the Bills’ fortunes hinge on Josh Allen. Flashes of potential and some big-time throws are nice, but the overall statistical output was not great by any means. Buffalo will need him to make a leap, so we’ll try to make a reasonable projection of what we can expect.MethodologyThis project looks to predict growth in five key areas: Yards/Game, Yards/Attempt, Completion Percentage, Interception Percentage, and Touchdown Percentage. These five were selected as a result of who we looked to compare Josh Allen to. To make the projection, data was gathered for quarterbacks who had 50 or more regular-season passing attempts in their first two seasons. This was done league wide over a span of ten years, with quarterbacks drafted from 2008 to 2017. Because many of these quarterbacks did not start at the beginning of their first year (like Josh Allen) or were spot players, a greater emphasis was placed on rate-based stats. Volume-based data would be drastically different between John Skelton and Andrew Luck, for example. For the five measures, the difference between year one and two was calculated for every quarterback (37 in total). An average change was calculated as well as the standard deviation for each to come up with a range of “normal change” for each metric. With all that said, it’s time for some charts. Yards/GameThis format will be used for each of the metrics. Josh Allen’s first year is followed by the three “likely” outcomes. The “projection ave” is the perfect mean-average-change for the quarterback data set added to Josh Allen’s first year. The “projection min” and “max” are the limits of the normal range (one standard deviation from the mean). For fun I’ve also added the best-case scenario. Because of the varying circumstances in how each quarterback found their way to the field, this is an incredibly volatile data set. Allen’s year one was pretty dismal as the 32nd-ranked quarterback in this measure. If he has a pretty ordinary increase, Allen will hit 191 yards per game or so, which would be a disappointment for sure. A regression isn’t out of the question, either. For the optimists, it wouldn’t be a major shocker for him to reach the 230 yards-per-game range. This would have been good for 25th in the league last year, but quarterbacks have been successful with this output. For our best case scenario, John Skelton was able to increase his completion percentage and yards per attempt significantly. These efficiency tweaks seemed to have paid off by increasing his per-game yardage by nearly 110 yards per game. This increase for Allen would put him just shy of 300 yards per game, which would be near the top of the league. The closest realistic parallel is Blake Bortles, who increased his yardage per game by nearly 70 yards. Yards/AttemptYards per attempt should help factor out some of the wackiness that occurred above thanks to drastically different playing times. Allen’s debut of 6.5 yards per attempt was tied for 31st in the league. Average change in the ten-year span was a very slight uptick. However, we again see high variability. Regression could get ugly quick, but progression within even the normal range would have Josh Allen reach 7.8 yards per attempt, which would most likely be flirting with the top ten. The best case scenario is that changes in the team lead to a Jared Goff-like change of 2.7 yards per attempt. Goff improved from a hideous 5.3 yards per attempt to a more than healthy 8.0 Y/A. While that same change would put Allen at 9.2, that’s not out of the question. Goff was actually tied with Nick Foles for the largest increase in this stat during the ten-year span. Foles’s first year of 6.4 led to 9.1 in his second year. If Allen were to reach that high he’d almost certainly be top three. Completion PercentageNo statistic is used more frequently to disparage Josh Allen than completion percentage. His 52.8% was dead last in the league. Regression would make him dead last-ier. Perfectly average change would lead him to 54.2%, which probably would keep him dead last. A top-end “normal” improvement leads to 58.7%. While not dead last, it would have been close in 2018. The best case scenario comes courtesy of Christian Ponder—who started at 54% and improved in his second year by 7.8%. There’s room to hope here, too, as five of the quarterbacks in the decade of data had improvement of 7% or higher. Another four quarterbacks improved by 6% or more. Unfortunately, though Vosean Joseph NFL Jersey , to get to league average Allen would need to jump about 13%, which is nearly twice what any quarterback was capable of doing between year one and year two. Touchdown PercentageNo one will care about completion percentage or yardage if the team is piling on points. One way Josh Allen can help that is to increase his touchdown percentage. This measure is simply the percent of passes a quarterback throws that go for a touchdown. In his first year, Allen threw a touchdown 3.1% of the time or about one every 32 passes. This had him tied for 30th. Average improvement would put him at 4.0%, which should be striking distance from league average. A jump to 6.2% would still classify as “normal” but place Allen in the top ten in all likelihood. Nick Foles provides the best-case scenario. His jump of 6.2% is in large part thanks to a dreadful year one at 2.3%. Carson Wentz also provides hope of major improvement going from 2.6% to 7.5%. Interception PercentageThis one is last because it’s the only stat where less is more. Josh Allen was second worst in the league in 2018 with his 3.8% rate. And note that these are all for qualifying quarterbacks. A certain someone had over twice the interception rate as Josh Allen. His name rhymes with “Skate Skeeterman” if you’re curious. Regression would clearly be bad. On average, quarterbacks improved nearly half a percent. If Allen were to do that he’d still fare pretty poorly. We have another stat with a wide range of “normal change” though. There’s no reason to suggest Allen couldn’t improve all the way to 1.7% for interceptions. That should be right on the edge of top ten. For our “best case” scenario, two quarterbacks improved by over 4%, which would be impossible for Allen to improve by. So theoretically, the best case is that he throws zero interceptions—but that’s not incredibly likely. SummaryRight off the bat, here’s the good news: In all five metrics, at least 21 quarterbacks out of the sample of 37 improved in year two. For yards per game, 24 quarterbacks improved and for touchdown percentage 26 did. It’s more likely than not Josh Allen won’t regress. So while the “projected min” columns were included to show a normal range of change, it’s not realistic to expect that out of Allen. If Allen were to improve the average amount he’d have a pretty disappointing season, likely eliciting some cries to replace him in year three. Fans will be looking for a larger-than-average leap from Allen, with most measures toward the “projection-max” or “best-case” values. How likely is it that Allen will reach those heights? Well the “best-case” names are included for a reason. Many of the quarterbacks with the largest leaps were all ones who had a team prepared to invest in them. Carson Wentz, Nick Foles, Jared Goff, and yes Blake Bortles all saw big gains. Each of these quarterbacks had a team willing to bet on their guy, and several saw major team changes cater to the quarterback. If nothing else, it’s very clear that the Buffalo Bills have gone out of their way to prop up Josh Allen this season. If there’s something to this Josh Allen fella, it’s perfectly reasonable to think he’ll make a sizablejump in 2019. And what better way to celebrate it than to talk about my favorite person within the Dallas Cowboys organization - Jason Garrett. Sure, he’s not everyone’s favorite and for some people - he’s at the bottom of your list, but hey - that’s what makes us all unique.When the Cowboys were 3-5 at the midway point this season, Jason Garrett’s approval rating was at an all-time low. The hot seat was pretty toasty at that time if you were listening to the scuttlebutt all across Cowboys Nation. Of course, Jerry Jones never wavered on his faith in his head coach and he had to feel pretty darn good when the Cowboys went on a run to finish the season. Another NFC East title was great, but then another divisional playoff loss was not so great and here we are again wondering what to expect next.Garrett will be sticking around, but his former offensive coordinator Scott Linehan is not. And after many fans were hoping for less Garrett, it’s possible we could be seeing even more Garrett should he take on the play-calling responsibilities. How does that make you feel? Here are three reasons you should feel pretty good about what’s coming down the pike for the Cowboys.Reason #1 - The rebuild is almost completeJason Garrett isn’t just a coach. He’s a team-builder. You hear all this talk about his “process” and how he is “building a team the right way,” but it’s a legit blueprint. He’s doing what he set out to do. Year after year, Garrett has remodeled each position group. It started out with a complete overhaul of an aging offensive line. After never taking an offensive lineman in the first-round of the draft since owning the team, Jones’ Cowboys took Tyron Smith during Garrett’s first year as head coach. They selected two more first-round lineman over the next three years in the draft. All three are All-Pro’s. Then came the defensive line overhaul, then secondary, and last year it was the pass catchers as both the wide receivers and tight end position groups were completely blown up.It’s frustrating to always listen to him talk about him improving the roster, but at least he’s kept the team competitive while he’s done it. He’s only had one losing season as a head coach and it came during a season where the team had no competent quarterback option after Tony Romo got hurt. Not only have they won the NFC East in three of the last five seasons, but Garrett’s done it with three different teams. Are you excited about next season? Of course you are. Other teams have flashed some great seasons, but they’ve had trouble sustaining their success.The New York Giants have had five losing seasons over the last six years. In 2016, they were praised for all that free agent spending and it was good enough for a wild card playoff appearance, but have since only won 25% of their games over the last two years. Some of their high-priced free agents aren’t even on the team anymore.The Philadelphia Eagles were also applauded for great front-office maneuvers. They won their first Super Bowl in franchise history last season. They tried to keep their success going by trading away a draft pick to get Golden Tate, but that turned out to be a costly rental. The Eagles are in the worst financial position of anyone in the league as they are $16 million over the cap. They’re going to have even more cost-cutting moves this offseason which will weaken their roster. And who knows what’s going on with their quarterback situation? Just a year ago, they were on top of the world. Now, they’re at a crossroad.The San Francisco 49ers looked like the next best thing under Jim Harbaugh, but they have missed the playoffs the last five seasons and gone through four different coaches. They’ve have five different quarterbacks lead their team in passing since 2011 dating back to when Alex Smith was still behind center.Winning games in the postseason is still what ails this Cowboys team, but let’s not pretend this isn’t a winning football team right now.Reason #3 - The play-callerGarrett is known for being a great motivator of his players. Nobody denies that. This team plays with a lot of fight. The issue comes when the Cowboys get out-coached with the X’s and O’s. After being one of the top offensive teams in the league not too long ago, the offense has slid considerably. They’ve have the leading rusher in three of the last five seasons, including Ezekiel Elliott in 2016 and 2018, but the passing game has diminished. Linehan is gone and the Cowboys are in search of a new play-caller Youth Dorance Armstrong Jersey , but it could be a familiar coach who might be the de facto offensive coordinator going forward. Reports are that Garrett could be in line to call plays for this offense.Fans may grimace over the idea that the hopes of sprucing up the passing game falls on Garrett, but they shouldn’t. He’s had success doing just that. Check out the team’s passing stats over the last 12 seasons (the top 10 finishes are highlighted in green):I included the team’s leading passer in there to show that success in the air isn’t just Romo dependent. In fact, the common denominator for finishing in the top 10 in passing isn’t Romo at quarterback, but rather Garrett as the play-caller.Garrett handed over play-calling responsibilities in 2013 to Bill Callahan after it was believed freeing Garrett up would have a better overall effect on the success of the team. That wasn’t the answer as the team again finished 8-8 and the passing offense declined considerably. Callahan was replaced with Linehan and the team went on to make the playoffs three times, but the passing offense kept getting worse. Part of this was the emergence of a strong rushing attack, but the team lost it’s way to help move the ball through the air.The team is taking steps to help improve in that department. Adding Amari Cooper certainly will help. Drafting Michael Gallup should pay dividends as well. But giving Garrett more play-calling duties may also be the winning ticket in helping get the passing game back on track. Regardless of who is named the new offensive coordinator, look for Garrett to take more control of the offense. He’s built the team his way, he’s got them all playing with a relentless spirit, and now it’s time for them to run his offense.This team is truly becoming Jason Garrett’s team and it won’t be much longer before we all realize that’s a very good thing. Throughout the years the Senior Bowl has done an excellent job of finding small school talents and getting them to Mobile to help their draft stock. This year, Oshane Ximinies is one of the best small schoolers here participating. Oshane Ximines is a redshirt senior out of Old Dominion, a small school in Norfolk, Virginia. In his four years at ODU, Ximines recorded 32.5 sacks, 51 tackles for loss Dorance Armstrong Jersey Stitched , 176 total tackles, 11 forced fumbles, and 12 passes defended. Ximines’ production at ODU improved in every year, and so did his level of play on the field. The 6’3 1/2”, 241-lb defensive end is a pass rush technician due to his hand placement, variety of pass rush moves, and ability to use the length (33 3/8” arms) he has to the best of his abilities. Though he is undersized, Ximines plays much larger than his listed numbers would suggest. While he’s both on the shorter and lighter side, the former ODU rusher has mass and power where it matters most. At the point of attack, Ximines plays with great hand placement, arm strength, and leverage to hold off offensive lineman and free himself tot get to the ball carrier in the run game. When rushing the passer, he has less than ideal bend and flexibility in his lower half, so he relies on his relentlessness and technique to win on the edge. Ximines consistently mirrors offensive lineman’s hand placement which allows him to keep lineman from getting inside hand placement and control him at the point of attack. Along with his elite hand work Youth Dalton Schultz Jersey , he has a wide variety of pass rush moves that allows him to get home even with his lack of true athleticism and burst. At ODU, he showed swims, cross-chops, push-pull, and two-hand swipes to clear offensive linemen’s hands away from his chest plate. Where Oshane Ximines limitations come in are in the athletic ability areas of his game. He lacks ideal bend, speed, and flexibility in his hips and legs. One of my favroite things about Ximines is while not being blessed with elite size, athletic traits, or flexibility, the guy still knows how to get home. The EDGE position in Dallas is far from a glaring need, but adding a guy that can (hopefully) complement DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory off the edge would certainly help take this defense to the next level. The good news is that the Colts rookie class has continued to handle the heavy workload quite well and all of this early experience could payoff considerably down the road due to intensive player development.As has been the case all season, young Colts played a major role in the outcome of Sunday’s home divisional game against the Texans. Let’s take a look at their contributions and see how their impact is changing.OffenseThe offensive contributions are still heavily influenced by Quenton Nelson and running backs Jordan Wilkins and Nyheim Hines. Nelson has still played every down in 2018 and has established himself as a building block for the unit’s future. He was visibly abused on a stunt by Jadeveon Clowney on Sunday but is still the best young lineman on the team.The running game is starting to fall off entirely in Indianapolis. This is certainly impacting the role and production for rookie rushers Jordan Wilkins and Nyheim Hines. Wilkins only carried the ball 8 times for 16 yards and Hines rushed 4 times for 10 yards. Neither player was particularly effective but when the play-calling balance is 62 passes to 14 runs (excluding quarterback scrambles), it won’t be easy to get things going.Indianapolis fell behind early in the first half that saw little signs of offensive life. This certainly changed the game plan and the half time adjustment was to put the team on Andrew Luck’s shoulders and move the ball through the air. No player was a greater beneficiary of the new game plan than Hines. This was a breakout game for him as a receiver and as a facet of the passing offense. He caught a team high 9 passes on a team high 11 targets for 63 yards and 2 touchdowns.With second-year running back Marlon Mack still on the sideline and veteran Robert Turbin serving the final game of his suspension, Wilkins and Hines dominates the offensive snaps. Hines was in the game for 68% of offensive snaps with Wilkins gathering 35% of the opportunities. The only other running back to take a snap was Jeremy McNichols with 2 total.DefenseThe Colts run defense has continued to look strong through four games but the pass defense struggled against the Texans. This could be partially due to injuries keeping Quincy Wilson out of the game and ending Kenny Moore’s day early but Houston was able to effectively move the ball through the air. I think it’s fair to point out that fans might be overlooking at least 14 points that Houston scored that were essentially due to offensive mistakes in the first half — meaning that the defense was far better than the score indicates — but the final passing play in overtime was a prime example of some of the struggles the unit faced.Rookie linebacker Darius Leonard didn’t have a signature play this week but he did continue to set the tone for all of the defense. He missed his first snap of the season after hobbling off of the field but was immediately back in, gathering 99% of the defensive snaps. He led the team with 13 tackles Malik Hooker Jersey , including 8 solos and 1 sack. Through four weeks, Leonard’s 54 tackles is 8 more than any other player this season and one of the highest four week totals in history. Also this:There is nothing more fans can ask from Leonard to this point in the season. He has vastly outperformed any legitimate expectation and has to be considered a front runner for NFL defensive rookie of the year. It is exciting to imagine what he will be able to accomplish if he can stay healthy the rest of the way. The other rookie defensive contributor is edge rusher Kemoko Turay. He followed up a breakout performance against the Eagles by adding another half sack on an impressive play against the Texans. He has been visibly improving and has created pressure on the quarterback for much of the season. His stat sheet also included another quarterback hit. He led all other rookies with 36% of the defensive snaps.The only other rookie to see the field on defense was linebacker Zaire Franklin who took five total snaps and continued to out-pace veteran Najee Goode who took only 1.Second-year contributors, Malik Hooker and Nate Hairston continued to be relied upon for a full days work on defense, taking every snap. Linebacker Anthony Walker took 84% of the defensive snaps with Kenny Moore behind him at 37%. Moore left the field with concussion early in the game and did not return.Of the second-year players, the biggest contribution came from Anthony Walker who finished the game with 10 tackles, including 9 solos Clayton Geathers Jersey Stitched , a sack, and 2 tackles for a loss. He continues to play a bigger and bigger role in the Colts new defense and has been promising since he returned from injury. Hooker finished the game with 2 tackles, Hairston with 4, and Moore with 3.
