It’s a different excuse or moral victory for each game, but the fact remains; the Browns have had a decisive win in the palm of their hands for the first 4 weeks of the NFL season, and in 3 of these cases, lost the game due to persistent errors and mental mistakes. For all 3 losses, the Browns snatched a loss from the jaws of victory multiple times.The moral victory Monday crowd, or those looking for a silver lining, will have an easy time finding joy in the Browns thrilling yet ultimately heartbreaking 45-42 loss to the Oakland Raiders on Sunday. The emergence of Baker Mayfield as a bonafide QB prospect, looking unreasonably prepared for his first start in a tremendously hostile environment, will provide an undercurrent of hope and joy in the weeks to come. Nick Chubb electrified the offense with two runs yesterday, and the young standout defensive talent of Myles Garett, Denzel Ward, and Damarious Randall was on full display. Browns fans will find comfort in those facts as the week goes on, but in the moment, it’s difficult to look past the mostly ridiculous reasons the Browns couldn’t escape with a win.Objectionably awful missed calls from the referees in the key moments of the game will undoubtedly bear the majority of the fan angst, but a potential win was frittered away by all three phases of the Browns attack.Without further adieu...Special teamsI bring this phase of the team up first, since it’s objectively the most embarrassing and incomprehensible failure of the current Browns coaching staff. (This is a high bar!) It’s remarkable that after years of grumbling about the repeated under performing special teams units led by Chris Tabor, the Browns would manage to find the coach that makes Tabor look like a hall of famer.Bad starting field position due to coverage. The Browns gave up enormous chunks of field position every time they exchanged the ball. The punt coverage units, for four straight weeks, have been absolutely abysmal. Plays that don’t feature a holding penalty typically show undisciplined gunners flying past ball carriers, and the Browns are unable (or unwilling) to funnel returners into the heart of the coverage unit.Kickoff and punt returning is a catastrophe. Jabrill Peppers continues to only return balls when defenders are near, and had multiple awful returns driven by indecision and hesitation or by executing “Leeeeeroy Jennnnnnkins” maneuvers out of the end zone. Antonio Callaway (after much wailing and gnashing of teeth) finally got an opportunity to return a kick, and promptly almost fumbled the ball.Every single punt, received or kicked, that doesn’t produce a holding or block in the back penalty is a surprise. The Browns even managed the rare “procedural shift” penalty (I don’t think this is the correct name, but i’m too lazy to look it up) Oakland hadn’t heard of it either, and declined.The place kicking didn’t have a chance to impact this game, but i’m putting it in here because i’m sure Joseph would have borked it up, if he was given the opportunity. As a reminder, the Browns weren’t forced to add a 69% career kicker to the roster; they did this to themselves.DefensiveBrowns fans and national pundits lauded the team defense through three weeks Authentic Darren Fells Jersey , and that left me with a sense of unease. The play from individual contributors such as Myles Garrett, Larry Ogunjobi, Denzel Ward, Terrance Mitchell, Joe Schobert and Damarious Randall was stellar through the first 3 weeks. Even during close games, Gregg Williams continued to relentlessly bring 5 and 6 defenders on blitz packages, leaving enormous holes in the defensive secondary. In week 1 versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, the weather assisted around 6-10 different misfired passes from Ben Roethlesburger to various targets, landing just out of reach of pass catchers that were wide open with plenty of grass in front of them. Forced fumbles in the first 3 weeks flipped the field position frequently, but receivers were open for chunk plays and teams failed to capitalize on it. Despite the litany of dropped balls for Derek Carr’s pass catchers, including a walk in touchdown, it was easy pitch and catch for most of the day, en route to Oakland piling up a staggering 565 yards of offense. These numbers could have been significantly worse if it wasn’t for turnovers and the Raiders starting deep inside Browns territory on a number of drives. The luck finally ran out for this defensive unit.Gregg Williams continued to play same aggressive scheme and leave 4th and 5th string defensive backs alone on coverage islands. EJ Gaines has been active in practice for two weeks, and TJ Carrie is primarily an inside corner. It showed, as Carrie failed multiple times to jam receivers on the line or keep his balance, giving Carr easy throwing lanes for pass catchers on the boundary.Williams continually left Schobert alone in space with Jared Cook, who was being played as a WR, and the results shouldn’t surprise anyone. Fans should remember Gregg telling on himself and saying that this result is the soft spot of his defense, while also hoping to keep 3 and 4 linebackers on the field at all times. The Browns were unable to stop the run consistently all day, while keeping these linebackers on the field for the litany of screen passes and TE actions, created easy opportunities for the pass game. Gregg Williams scheme was the biggest reason 42 points was insufficient for the Browns to get the W, not the referees. Snap counts!Inevitably, the heavy snaps played for key defenders was going to pay a toll. Late in the game, the Browns defenders (especially on the defensive line) had trouble getting lined up, were on their heels, and had hands on hips as they struggled to match the tempo of Oakland’s offense. The Browns don’t trust the backup players up front, aside from Chris Smith, and it showed late in the game.Coverage breakdowns in the defensive backfield showed up relentlessly as the Browns failed to pass receivers between coverage zones. I’ve never seen as many receivers without a body around them as I did in the Browns game on Sunday. OffensiveIt’s difficult to trash the Browns offense after scoring 42 points. It has been years since the Browns were able to put 30 points or more on the board, and this was a bonanza of offensive output. A pick six generated from a receiver falling down in a route, and two fumbles in the heart of the Browns end zone, created impossible situations for the Browns defense. After going up 14 points in the second half, the Browns went five straight drives without a first down, coupled with the aforementioned turnovers in their own half of the field.The first time the Browns run a jet sweep in which the timing isn’t clunky and where they aren’t nearly fumbling or turning the ball over will be the first. Haley ran this play more than 4 times on Sunday, and while they weren’t always catastrophes, they’re an poor idea within 3 yards of the end zone, and the hand offs/exchanges were always fraught with a tremendous amount of risk. The reward from this play isn’t worth the danger it presents, and the Browns were lucky it didn’t get worse. 6 total touches for Duke Johnson, 3 for Nick Chubb. Total. Chubb had long house calls on two of his three touches, and was still out touched 22 to 3. I understand that it’s difficult to play a rookie running back, with typically suspect pass blocking, in front of a rookie quarterback. It’s especially difficult when you’ve got a pass-first offense. There’s still no excuse for failing to get both of these players involved for the, well.....always-th time. The Browns do this every week.Lack of first team reps for Baker Mayfield and the familiarity it would develop were primary proponents for the fumbled exchange and lack of chemistry on the timing plays, like the jet sweeps and the RPO passes. The Browns offense is still getting used to Mayfield, and it showed. Offensive motion/action was off all day.LAST, but certainly not least, is the decision to punt the ball back to the Raiders with an 8 point lead. Once the spot, unfairly or not, was established as 4th and inches, the Browns had the opportunity to put the game away for good. The defense had already given up over 450 yards to the Raiders, was gassed, and was missing half of the starting cornerbacks. A QB sneak or ISO dive play has an 80%+ chance of getting the first down and deciding the outcome. The Browns, conservatively, gave the ball back to Oakland with a chance to score and tie. On the road, in that environment, i’d like to see an aggressive play call. Browns fans, the future is bright. The talent on the 2018 Browns is evident. Extracting the most from this talent, who will continue to act their age Womens Denzel Ward Jersey , will be the biggest challenge for the coaching staff, who have (at many levels) shown an inflexible nature and unwillingness to change. Thompson had been the starter for most of training camp, but suffered a shoulder stringer and rib injury in the third preseason game against Minnesota and sat out the final week of the preseason."He practiced today a little on a limited basis but he is ready to go," Carroll said.Johnson's action in the preseason was also limited. He played only the final two weeks, but Seattle saw enough to feel comfortable with him as the expected starter. What’s different about you?A: I learned a lot about the man outside of football. I had a lot of time to reflect on my life and where I want to go and the decisions I made, and I just want to get better with some of my decisions that I made and improve on them.Q: What was it like coming back into the facility this morning?A: It felt great, it felt great to see my guys. I love each and every one of my teammates, and it was just good to see the smiles on their faces, and they welcomed me with open arms. The Vikings and Jets combined to have 14 chances to convert third downs in the first half of Sunday’s game at MetLife Stadium.They were unsuccessful on each and every one of those attempts and managed 12 first downs between them in a first half that saw the defenses do most of the impressive work. The Vikings were able to drive for a touchdown on their first possession and they converted a short field into a field goal, which leaves them up 10-7 at the break.It’s very windy at the game, which may explain some of the difficulties that the two teams have experienced while trying to string together productive drives. It certainly played a role on Dan Bailey missing a field goal late in the second quarter after the Vikings capitalized on another short field.Kirk Cousins is 12-of-23 for 104 yards and has been sacked once over the first 30 minutes. Another example people tend to bring up are the 2014 and 2017 New England Patriots when the team started both seasons 2-2, and managed to go to the Super Bowl both times, winning it in 2015. It’s about time fans stop settling for mediocrity, because mediocrity won’t get the Vikings to the Super Bowl. I was always taught that when someone continues to give you crap, or constructive criticism, then that means that person cares about you. Fans know that Minnesota has the capability to be better than how the team has been performing. The NFC North won’t be a two-horse race like we’ve seen in the past. The Chicago Bears are a whole new team on both sides of the ball with head coach Matt Nagy. He knows how to operate the offense and make it successful with quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. By the way, where the hell did he come from? What an exciting player to watch when he’s on his game. The Bears defense is intimidating to watch, especially with a beast in Khalil Mack. As long as Aaron Rodgers remains quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, then the team will always be able to compete. Then there are the Detroit Lions, who may have finally found a run-game that has been absent for several seasons. Road blocks to some, while others may think of it as excuses, take it how you wish. Something that upsets me or worries me is the fact that even the Vikings’ defensive-minded head coach doesn’t know what’s going on with what’s supposed to be one of the best defenses in the league. They have announced the signing of Kobe McCrary and Kareem Are.McCrary, a former University of Minnesota alum, was an undrafted free agent and is no stranger to the Vikings since he spent rookie minicamp with the team. He was with the Gophers for two years, leading the team in rushing with 5.3 yards per carry as well as rushing for 738 yards and 11 touchdowns. He was also the recipient of the 2017 Gary Tinsley Award. McCrary spent his first two years at Butler Community College and had an impressive 1,190 yards on 225 carries and led the NJCAA with 22 rushing touchdowns.The Vikings also signed Are, who signed with Oakland Raiders as a undrafted free agent in 2017. If you don’t know who Adam Thielen is period, then you probably definitely live under a rock. But on a real note, I didn’t know who Hennigan was until about a week ago. I heard our very own Daily Norseman writer Ted Glover hung out with him back in the late ‘40’s, early ‘50’s though (kidding). Hennigan played seven seasons with the Houston Oilers from 1960-1966. In his 95 games he caught over 400 passes for a near 7,000 yards. Give a man credit when credit is due. Thielen has earned respect from his on-field performances, or at least he should. If you don’t respect the man, then you’re simply a hater, and that’s not cool. Haters gonna hate, I suppose. He was certainly getting love on Twitter from former Vikings like Cris Carter, Chad Greenway and current teammate George Iloka. I wanted to try and make this post a little bit more interesting for fans of Thielen. I figured I would upload his college highlights from Mankato State, and his highlights from the season. Here’s a video that combined the two:The real question is, how long will the streak continue? Hopefully for the rest of the year. Week by week, Thielen is slowly becoming Cousins’ go-to guy. On the year, Thielen has caught 67 passes for 822 yards. He’s only 454 yards away from matching his career-high 1 Youth Harrison Smith Jersey ,276 receiving yards from last season. However, you’d think teams would start to double cover him soon. If defenses do start to do that, then I’d assume Stefon Diggs would see the same type of productivity he did last year. Not saying Diggs isn’t being productive, and correct me if I’m wrong, but it just seemed like Diggs was the deep threat guy last year. SKOL!Aviante Collins: Where’s His Best Fit ? One of the guys in the mix for a starting/roster spot along the offense line is Aviante Collins, a second year man that the Vikings picked up last year as an undrafted free agent out of TCU. So far he’s generally been seen to be having a good training camp, and had a pretty good night in Denver as well. Looking For a PositionLast year, Collins got most of his reps at right tackle, where he played in college.He was also seen as athletic enough (4.81” 40) to see some action at left tackle as well.Collins had the upper body strength (34 benchbress reps), but was a little light for a tackle (295 lbs) and just didn’t have the lower body strength and girth to anchor very well against NFL defensive linemen.That created some footwork issues at times as he tried to over compensate http://www.vikingsauthorizedshops.com/authentic-everson-griffen-jersey , which left him off balance.Nevertheless he made the roster and saw some limited action as an extra tackle in jumbo packages late in the season.He did well in that role. During the off-season, Collins added some weight - about 10 pounds of muscle– to help his lower body strength and anchoring ability.That, along with a year of NFL coaching, seems to have helped his performance.Collins plays with a nasty streak, which coach Mike Zimmer mentioned he likes about him, and had some good blocks against Denver - playing both left tackle and (mostly) left guard with the second string.The question with Collins is what is his best position?While he’s played mostly tackle, his arm length (33 3/8”) is not ideal for playing outside.Mike Zimmer apparently was the one to suggest playing him inside at left guard to see how he does.It makes sense as Collins has the size and quickness to play inside, and his arm length isn’t much of an issue there.There are at least a few other guys competing at left guard - Tom Compton, Danny Isidora, also Josh Andrews, so it’s unclear if that’s where he’s needed the most.But it may be his best position.Looking at the Denver game, Collins did better in his reps at left tackle.He struggled more at left guard, where he hadn’t played before Stefon Diggs Jersey , getting beat at times by quickness as he acclimated to the position.But that happened less frequently as the game progressed, suggesting with more reps he may continue to improve.What he did best at left guard was get to the second level - going out to block linebackers on run plays, and also getting out to block on screen passes.The question is that with so many competing at that position (left guard), how many reps will he get there?And will he improve enough to win the starting job?Tom Compton seemed to have the inside track at the starting LG spot, but he looked outmatched with the first team against Denver, and although Mike Zimmer gave him some light praise (he’s not going to criticize individual player performance much in press conferences), I suspect they may be looking more seriously at LG alternatives, which I expect will include Danny Isidora, Josh Andrews, and Aviante Collins.I suspect Collins’ roster spot is fairly safe at this point, as he can play any position except center along the offensive line.And maybe that’s the best spot for him - as a backup tackle or guard.But he may also turn out to be the best option at left guard if he continues to improve there with more reps.]]> huangjian123 https://0xbt.net/blog/view/43216/saints-look-to-start-strong-in-home Mon, 10 Dec 2018 06:00:02 +0000 https://0xbt.net/blog/view/43216/saints-look-to-start-strong-in-home <![CDATA[Saints Look to Start Strong in Home]]> Opener Against the Cleveland Browns We’ll continue a series of opponent preview posts for the New Orleans Saints opponents in 2018. On a three QB stunt play Taysom Hill picks up one yard. Kamara then takes it in on a short shuffle pass from Drew for the TD. Saints up 7-0.On the ensuing kickoff the Vikings take it out to the 21 but a personal foul flag backs it up to the 9. Pass on first gets a 1st down. A run takes it out to the 6. Next Kirk Cousins pass is blocked, but a penalty by P.J. Williams gives them 5 yards and a 1st down. A holding call backs them up 5. Latavius Murray gets that back and more. Murray runs again for the 1st down.Next run stopped by Cam Jordan at the line of scrimmage. 2nd and 11 turns into 3rd and 5. Adam Thielen reaches over P.J. and catches for another 1st. A short run and it’s 2nd and 7. Next play Stefon Diggs once again victimizes P.J to the 2 yard line. On the second play from the goal Kyle Rudolph steps out and does not reestablish so the TD catch is negated. Next pass is too high. Then Diggs catches a TD on 4th and goal.7 all.Saints start at the 25. Dump offs to Kamara and then Ingram brings up 3rd and 14. Saints go 3 and out and punt. Vikings punt return goes nowhere and they start at the 19.Adam Thielen picks up 14 on a 1st down run. Vikings pick up one which takes us to the 2nd quarter. Diggs picks up a 1st down. A flea flicker play burns P.J. again and they are in the Redzone. P.J. William gets another PI call this time in the endzone giving the Vikings 1st and goal. And easy running back leap scores a TD. They start the back half of their schedule with a road trip to Cincinnati to face the 5-3 Bengals, who have lost two of their last three games. The Saints enter the game with the league's second highest scoring offense, averaging 34.9 points per game, and average over 400 yards of total offense. They oppose a Cincinnati defense that is dead last in yards given up (448 yards/game), and are giving up 29.6 points per contest. While this appears to be a matchup largely in favor of the NFC South leaders, let's have a closer look how well the Saints offense actually stacks up against the Bengals defense. New Orleans is averaging 290 passing yards per game to rank 7th in the league, and quarterback Drew Brees is having one of the most efficient seasons of his storied career. Brees is completing just under 77% of his passes, and has thrown 18 touchdowns against just one interception. The future Hall of Famer's favorite target is third year wideout Michael Thomas, who is seemingly re-writing the team's record books with each passing week. The team's cornerbacks have especially struggled, despite having three former number 1 draft picks at the position. Dre' Kirkpatrick (drafted 2012), Darqueze Dennard (2014), and William Jackson III (2016) do not have an interception among them, and have been especially vulnerable down the field. The Bengals can pressure the passer despite their issues in coverage. They have brought down the quarterback 21 times, led by end Carlos Dunlap (7 sacks) and tackle Geno Atkins (6 sacks), son of former NFL safety Gene Atkins, who played for the Saints from 1987-93. The challenge of containment on Atkins and Cincinnati's interior rush will fall to center Max Unger, and guards Larry Warford and Andrus Peat. The Saints line allowed only 1 sack in the three games since their bye week against the formidable pass rushes of Baltimore, Minnesota, and Los Angeles. The Bengals defensive line is more adept at rushing the passer than their abilities against the run, setting up a potential dominant scenario for the New Orleans front five. To make matters worse, linebacker Nick Vigil, one of their leading tacklers, will sit out this game with a knee injury. Preston Brown is a solid middle 'backer, but has been caught up in traffic in pursuit due to the failures of the linemen in front of him. Vincent Rey replaces Vigil in the lineup, but he struggles to shed blocks or to keep up with backs coming out of the backfield. He had...four, maybe five passes that anyone would consider “difficult” but it was entirely unnecessary because the Patriots didn’t have to do anything difficult to win.Brady spent much of his day dumping the ball off to James White (10 catches for 79 yards) or throwing it to Julian Edelman in the middle of the field (9 catches for 104 yards). On the flip side, Julian Edelman was penalized for an unsportsmanlike penalty that pinned the Patriots on their own 5-yard line.Stephen Gostkowski had a strong day, hitting field goals from 25-, 40-, 38-, and 25-yards and missing one from 50-yards.
