The Vikings got blown out by the Bills White Laquon Treadwell Jersey , yes. But the week started with the Browns getting their first win in almost two years. The Jaguars, fresh off a win over the Patriots, lost to the Titans, despite the fact that Marcus Mariota was nowhere near 100 percent and didn’t even start the game. The Patriots lost to the Lions and looked awful. Then on Monday night, Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for over 400 yards...in a loss. What?Oh, and the Browns have a better record than the Patriots.So maybe the Vikings just got caught in a storm of Week 3 NFL-weirdness. That’s a better explanation for the game on Sunday than anything else I’ve seen, to be honest. Anyways, let’s look around the league.In the North...Matt Patricia got his first win as Lions head coach with the aforementioned victory over the Patriots. Again, people are trying to crank up the panic meter in Foxborough, but the Patriots have started seasons like this before and still won the Super Bowl. I’m not sure what to make of this win for the Lions, though. They started the season with a horrible loss and another pretty bad one, so this is obviously encouraging progress. It remains to be seen if they’ll be able to compete in this division.The Bears were absolutely gifted a game by Sam Bradford and the Cardinals, who blew a 14-point lead at home. All anyone wants to talk about from this game is the roughing the passer penalty on Clay Matthews, who’s now been flagged for that in every game this season, including a huge one against the Vikings last week. But the Packers look like they’re in trouble, especially considering the state of Aaron Rodgers’ knee. They take on the Bills next week, which will be interesting.NFC contender watchFor at least this week, this section is gonna have to start with the Rams. They looked dominant once again, this time in an impressive win over the Chargers in the battle for LA. They’ve looked invincible over three weeks, but I don’t think they’ve faced off against a real defense yet. So Thursday will be a huge, huge game. Carson Wentz returned and looked pretty good, getting the Eagles to 2-1. At this point I’m not ready to call anyone else a contender, but hey, prove me wrong, Ryan Fitzpatrick.Ex-Vikings quarterback reportThis is gonna have to be renamed the Case Keenum report unless Teddy Bridgewater gets into a game. As I indicated last week, Sam Bradford was on thin ice going into Week 3. And he fell right through, turning the ball over three times. He was pulled in favor of rookie Josh Rosen in the fourth quarter (sidenote: why would you put your rookie quarterback in for the first time when he’s losing late in the fourth quarter?) who then threw an interception to seal Arizona’s fate. Coach Steve Wilks named Rosen the starter going forward. Bradford is still making $20 million this year, though.Meanwhile, Case Keenum suffered his first loss as Denver’s starter. And it was a rough one — he threw for 192 yards and an interception while finishing with a QB rating of 29.3. It led to a 27-14 loss to the Ravens, which left both teams at 2-1. Keenum hasn’t been great statistically, but he’s done enough to help his team win so far this season. Next up will be a Monday night game against Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs.That’s it for WYM. See you next week.Minnesota Vikings Injury Report: Marcus Sherels OUT, four others questionable Prior to their game on Thursday night against the Los Angeles Rams, the Minnesota Vikings have only declared one player as out of action (not counting defensive end Everson Griffen, whose situation has already been well-documented) White Tom Compton Jersey , but they have plenty of other questions.Cornerback and punt returner Marcus Sherels will miss his second straight game with a rib injury, as the team has already declared him as “Out” for Thursday’s game. Mike Hughes will once again handle punt return duties in Sherels’ absence.The two biggest names on the list for the Vikings are running back Dalvin Cook and left tackle Riley Reiff, both of whom the Vikings have listed as “questionable” for tomorrow night. Cook missed the game against Buffalo with his hamstring issue, and was limited in practice on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Reiff, on the other hand, has not practiced all week with a foot issue, and for much of the Mike Zimmer regime the rule has been that if you don’t get into the last practice before a game, you don’t play. If Reiff has to sit out, we’re going to have to see how the Vikings will configure an offensive line that’s already had its issues.Also listed as “questionable” on the injury report for the Vikings are defensive tackle Tom Johnson (ankle) and safety Anthony Harris (hamstring). But while Kansas City struggles some in the open field – between its own 30 and the opposing 10 – the team is very good on third down.Backed Up Situations Near the Goal LineNew England’s success rate while being backed up inside its own 10-yard line took a hit against the Indianapolis Colts but the team has had some success in this area before last Thursday. Meanwhile, an interception in week one still hurts the turnover rate. The Chiefs, on the other hand, have also not been world beaters when having their opponent pinned deep in its own territory – mostly because a team that rarely punts, does not get a lot of opportunities to improve in this area.Red ZoneThe Patriots offense continues to improve in the red area (inside an opponent’s 30-yard line), especially when it comes to the success rate inside the 10: New England improved from 41.7% a week ago to 57.1%. The team’s week six opponent, on the other hand, has been mostly mediocre in the red zone. One statistic stands out, though: turnover rate. Kansas City’s defense has been able to produce takeaways on 9.5% of plays inside its own 10-yard line. In a game that could very well turn into a shootout, limiting mistakes in this part of the field is crucial for Tom Brady and the Patriots.Third DownsDuring yesterday’s press conference Womens Joe Thuney Jersey , Patriots head coach Bill Belichick pointed out that the Chiefs defense has had success in third down situations. Kansas City continuously moves the football well on any given down between its own 10 and the opponents’ 30, earning a 52.6% success rating – one of the best in the NFL. New England has been inconsistent in this area but has had success in others, especially one that is a strength of the Chiefs: big plays (plays that gain more than 20 yards). This will be a matchup of strength versus strength.Backed Up Situations Near the Goal LineNew England’s defense and Kansas City’s offense also match up rather evenly when it comes to backed-up situations: both teams have had some success in this area of the field – inside the offense’s own 10-yard line – which could make for an interesting battles if situations like this come along.Red ZoneWhile the Patriots remain an inconsistent defensive team in the red zone, the Chiefs field arguably the best red area offense in all of football. With the exception of the area between the 21 and 30, Patrick Mahomes and company have had plenty of success no matter the situation. Not only has the team been able to move the football well, it also has limited its mistakes and not turned the football over deep in opponents’ territory. Safe to say that execution in this part of the field will be a key for New England on Sunday.Third DownsDespite fielding the NFL’s most prolific offense, the Chiefs actually find themselves in third-and-longs rather often: on 61.0% of their 53 third down attempts the team has had to gain more than seven yards. Brandon Mebane showed up big on the first play blowing up a run play in the backfield. A badly off-target pass from Beathard and a subsequent false start put San Francisco in a deep hole on their first 3rd down of the game. Despite no pressure, Beathard still had to check down to his big tight end, George Kittle, who was stopped well short of the sticks to force a punt.The Chargers looked ready to go three-and-out on their next drive, but Lynn elected to go for it on 4th and short. Rivers was able to sneak the ball across the line to gain. From there, a nice catch and run by Gordon got the Chargers into 49ers territory. On 4th & 6, Lynn this time elected to try a long field goal and Caleb Sturgis missed from 54 yards out.Taking over at their own 44, the 49ers opened things up with a 12-yard run by Matt Breida. A chunk play to Marquise Goodwin was extended farther by a roughing the passer penalty on Philon. Finally, Beathard finished off the drive by finding Bourne for a 2-yard touchdown pass.Keenan Allen got the offense moving with a deep reception for 18 yards. Antonio Gates chipped in with a 22-yarder. And on 3rd down from the 5, Gates got as open as anyone has ever been open in the history of competitive football and Rivers hit him for the incredibly easy score.The 49ers took over just before the end of the 1st quarter and began a very long drive that eventually ended in a 21-yard field goal by Robbie Gould.With the ball back in the hands of the good guys, Rivers found Allen again for a 16-yard gain. Gordon added 16 of his own. Ekeler then came on and ran for 7 yards. Gordon then added a very physical run up the middle for 13 yards. They capped off the drive with Rivers hitting Gordon on a simple pass play for 6 yards and a score.Beathard appeared to be cooking on the next drive completing passes of 12, 23, 15, and 10 yards (with roughing the passer penalties on top of that). However, as they got into the red zone, Trevor Williams jumped a route and took it back 86 yards.Melvin Gordon caught a short pass and had a terrible fumble, but the Chargers got lucky as the 49ers screwed up the recovery by going out of bounds and Los Angeles held onto the ball. After trying to go right back to Gordon following the fumble, the Chargers elected to attempt a field goal on 4th & 5 from the 49ers’ 7-yard line. Shockingly, he converted.Beathard and co. came back on the field, but they were unable to do anything with it after Trevor Williams made a nice tackle on 3rd down just short of the sticks. The Chargers got the ball back and despite starting the drive with a truly great throw to Mike Williams, they were unable to get anything going afterward.On the second play of the next drive, Jahleel Addae took an embarrassingly bad angle in the open field and allowed George Kittle to rumble 82 yards for a touchdown.On the following drive, pressure had Rivers out of sorts as he failed to complete three consecutive passes after a nice 13-yard gain by Gordon.The 49ers took over and ran three plays while picking up a 1st down before the end of the 3rd quarter. Breida then made another nice run up the middle to move the sticks again. Beathard then hit Bourne for a 17-yard gain across the middle. Beathard avoided a sack and scrambled for a short gain on the next snap, but the real story was that Breida appeared to be injured. Two plays later on 3rd & 5, Beathard scrambled for the 1st down, but got annihilated by Casey Hayward at the end of the run. It was close, but Beathard was marked short and Kyle Shanahan challenged the spot. On further review, he was clearly short. Robbie Gould then came on to try a 33-yard field goal which he converted to give the 49ers the lead.After a touchback, the Chargers took over at their own 25. The drive got started with consecutive passes to Keenan Allen for 8 and 11 yards respectively. Ekeler ran through a would-be tackle in the backfield and cut upfield for 11 yards on the play. Gordon caught a pass for an easy 7 yards. Then Gordon broke off a long run for a 34-yard gain. Then, the Chargers ran a toss to the short side of the field for some reason and Ekeler had nowhere to go. Gordon came back on and caught a short pass for 5 yards to set up 3rd & 3 from the 3. Then they dialed up a bubble screen to Gates for some reason and it inevitably did not work, so Sturgis came on to try another field goal. He converted from 21 yards away.On the kick return, Michael Davis punched the ball out of the returner’s hands and Nick Dzubnar scooped it up before going out of bounds, but he didn’t seem to have full control and the call was overturned. The “home” crowd roared its approval. Breida started things off strong for the 9ers picking up 7 on 1st down, but the next two plays were incomplete pass attempts that had no real chance. The first of the two was broken up by a very nice play by Derwin James.Behind a very solid lead block by Keenan Allen, Gordon picked up 15 yards going over 100 yards on the day. Three straight plays to Ekeler got them withing half a yard of a 1st down. They lined up to go for it on 4th down, but they didn’t mean it and called a timeout. After that, Kaser came on to punt from the San Francisco 37. It was a truly cowardly decision.With the ball back, the 49ers went to their running game. Breida picked up 20 yards. Then Alfred Morris picked up another 4. On the next play, Isaac Rochell “intercepted” Beathard’s pass and returned it to the 19-yard line.The ball was knocked out by Derwin James, but technically the play was an interception as Beathard’s hand was moving forward.Ekeler got the ball on 1st down and picked up 5. On 2nd & 5, the Chargers didn’t get overly conservative and threw the ball on a designed rollout as Rivers found Virgil Green for a 1st down that brought us to the 2-minute warning. We’re now halfway through the preseason and battles for the bottom roster spots are well underway. Now that the league has moved to only one big cut at the end of the season we’re not going through the paces we were used to with weekly cuts as we whittled down the roster. While this gives the coaches more time to look at each group and every player it also makes the process more difficult to project for those who don’t wear black and gold to work every day.This is the second version of this roster projection series Alex Anzalone Jersey , and each week we’ll include not only roster projections but hot takes at various positions from our contributors here at Canal Street Chronicles. You can read version one here.Quarterbacks (3)Starter: Drew BreesBackup: Tom SavageBackup who runs fast on special teams: Taysom HillEven with his poor performance against the Cardinals Taysom still has the final roster spot for quarterbacks due to his play on special teams. While J.T. Barrett had a much better performance at the end of the 4th Quarter in New Orleans against Arizona than he did against Jacksonville he still hasn’t done enough to show he deserves to be protected by the 53 man roster while he develops. Currently he is a practice squad candidate.Staff Hot Take: Ellias J Williams “The Saints will cut Tom Savage and run with J.T. Barrett and Taysom Hill on the roster.”Runningbacks (5)Starter(s): Alvin Kamara & Mark Ingram *Backups: Jonathan Williams, Boston ScottFullback: Zach Line, Trey EdmundsSean Payton likes the runningback by committee approach, and he get’s to have plenty due to Ingram’s suspension. Right now Jonathan Williams seems to be leading the race for Mark’s snaps in the first four games of the season. The real question is who gets released once Ingram returns. Edmunds has been spending a lot of time in the “Hooman” role as a quasi-fullback/h-back/utility piece. This keeps him safe on the roster for now. Asterisk - Ingram’s suspension means he doesn’t count against the 53 man roster for the first four games of the season. Staff Hot Take: Don Kellum “Jonathan Williams performs so well he cuts into Ingram’s touches when he comes back.”Wide Receivers (5)Starters: Michael Thomas, Ted Ginn Jr, Cameron MeredithBackups: Tre’Quan Smith, Brandon TateTate through most of his career has been a receiver in name only. He is on the team for special teams; specifically he is currently the team’s top option as punt return and one of the two kick returners. That said we’ve seen the Saints offense bring players into the spotlight that had never previously entered it. Could Tate be that next guy? The four guys ahead of him are a lock for the roster. Be on the lookout for a Brandon Coleman reunion.Staff Hot Take: Chris Dunnells “WR/RB - Tommylee Lewis is gone. Deon Yelder has had flashes, but like many UDFAs he hasn’t been consistent in his first year and seems more practice squad candidate than roster material right now. Griffin, while having some splash plays on special teams, seems to be in the same category as Yelder. Roster spots on this team are precious and a defensive lineman or defensive back could end up simply being more valuable. Staff Hot Take: John Sigler “Arnold > Yelder. Most of the players on this list are locks for the roster with arguably only spots eight and nine on this projection even up for debate. Devaroe has continued to prove New Orleans right for keeping him around after his injury issues. The one week fire that was Jayrone Elliot hype has smoldered after the Cardinals game. With two weeks left until cut day the bottom of the linebacker roster is up for grabs.Staff Hot Take: Ellias J Williams “Kikaha is traded to Greenbay”Cornerbacks (7)Starters: Marshon Lattimore, Ken Crawley, Patrick RobinsonBackups: P.J. With the change in kickoff rules coming here in 2018 we Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sportscould start seeing rosters devote more space to defensive backs and other skill positions to accommodate the new rules. There are still many questions on how the rules will affect the game, and special teams coordinators are certainly going through their own learning curve,but right now players like Jamerson, Hardee and Maulet all have looked pretty strong. Staff Hot Take: Bob Rose “Neither PJ or Kikaha make the team. Rookie Kamrin Moore has struggled with injures and Rickey Jefferson tore his ACL against the Cardinals. Bell, Coleman and Williams will all likely see significant playing time while Banjo continues to be the special teams contributor he was originally brought in to be. Staff Hot Take: Chris Conner “Vonn Bell will get cut. He changed his number, and the curse of Corey White still lives on in New Orleans”Note: Chris wins the Hot Take of the week award. Special Teams (3)Punter: Thomas MorsteadKicker: Wil LutzLong Snapper: Zach WoodKeys to success: More Tre’Quan Smith is one of few tweaks Saints are making to gain advantage over Falcons Whatever it takes to get the upper hand, you do it!Tre’Quan Smith, Cameron Meredith, Ted Ginn Jr. Youth Austin Carr Jersey , and Alvin Kamara will all be doing something slightly different than they’ve done up to this point in the season when they arrive in Atlanta to face the Falcons in Week 3.For Smith, this appears to translate into an expanded role according to head coachSean Payton.“We have to find ways to get him more touches. He is handling our installation. He knows what we are doing game plan wise, and I think he is ready to prove that.” I get it.This is a chance to see what the rookie can do in an important game where any wrinkle can result in an upper hand.He’s shown a lot in camp and during preseason, so now is as good a time as ever for him to swim or sink.The question is, will he look more like Kenny Stills or Robert Meachem? Meanwhile, following an injury to return specialist Tommylee Lewis that placed him on injured reserve, the Saints have inserted two new candidates into the now vacant punt return duties.One of those candidates Sean Payton said, “I know I’m comfortable with Alvin (Kamara) back there” but the other he was a little more guarded about and used it as a chance to give the player a vote of confidence“Ted Ginn is someone who’s done it and we just got to get that gas can in his locker and get him going. I think he’s someone who can give you some juice in that area.”Notice the highlighted “subtle” differences in the certainty of the two individual players?Over his career as a punt returner, Ginn has fielded 257 punts for 2,600 yards and 4 TDs.The drawback to some of that “juice” Payton alluded to is that he’s also had 16 fumbles in that time span.Two of them last year as a Saint that had Payton suggesting they “needed to find someone they can trust” before relieving him of those duties.When Payton had his issues with Reggie Bush, he used Lance Moore for the fair catch scenarios.I’d imagine something similar with Kamara and Ginn on Sunday.Finally, Cameron Meredith looks set to make his much anticipated regular season debut as a Saint after being inactive for the previous two games.“He’s doing well. He’s healthy. And this will be a week we’ll look to see how he progresses and see if we can get him into this plan.”Now granted, I trust that the staff knows when he’s ready to contribute but practice speed and game speed are two different things.His first preseason game saw him drop a pass (albeit thrown with questionable touch) that resulted in an INT for his quarterback.He would go on to fair much better in his fourth preseason game with 2 catches for 77 yards and a TD.It obviously took him some time to get up to speed, but those games were meaningless and the current scenario now begs the question - Does game rust and lack of action in the offense for Meredith show up at an inopportune time?I brought all of this to you to make a single point.There is some serious boom or bust potential with the timing of these changes.On one hand, the “newness” of these players and roles could give the Saints a slight advantage in what will be an otherwise close game. On the other they provide a breeding ground for potential mishaps because of that very same “newness”.In a rivalry that is usually won by the team that makes the fewest mistakes, we’ll find out which side of the coins these moves land on following Sunday’s game.Matchup to watch vs FalconsThe Falcons offensive line is missing starting left guard Andy Levitre after he was placed on IR earlier this week.If the secondary is going to hold up against Atlanta’s receiving talent, the defensive line will need to be the catalyst that makes it all possible.Yes, it’s important that the defensive backs force Ryan to go through more than his 1st or 2nd read, but it’s up to the front seven to make him pay when he does.Once you begin hitting Ryan (like any other quarterback) that’s when the mistakes and the second guessing start to appear.If they can rattle him Marshon Lattimore, Ken Crawley, and Marcus Williams should have a chance to turn some tipped passes or errant throws into turnovers late in the game.Random Thought IEven at a young age, when you walk out on the field with your friends you know the consequences of playing tackle football.While being hurt as a kid was more likely than getting injured, you still recognized it’s a gladiator sport.Interesting that many QBs are coming out and trashing the NFL’s current aims to protect the quarterback position.Random Thought IIAdd the recent news that Saints plan to start P.J. Williams in place of Ken Crawley, as another change that has boom or bust potential.The Saints offense is moving the ball and the Falcons offense is moving the ball.The Saints defense is giving up points and the Falcons defense is giving up points.Per usual in this rivalry, it could all come down to which defense or special teams makes the key play that ultimately ends up being the difference in this game.There will be plenty of opportunities for either side but with the Falcons down at least three of it’s primary play makers and the Saints fairly healthy New Orleans should could steal a victory in Atlanta.Prediction: Saints win 28-27
