DENVER (AP) — General managers John Elway and John Lynch share a bond going back three decades Kareem Jackson Jersey , one built on respect, rivalry and reverence.“He was the poster I had on my wall,” said Lynch, who’s 11 years younger than Elway, 58. “He was the idol I had growing up.”The Broncos (6-6) play the 49ers (2-10) Sunday in the latest chapter of the friendly feud between the two superstars-turned-GMs whose paths have crisscrossed throughout their careers, both on the football field and the front office. Both were tutored by celebrated California high school football coach Jack Neumeier and both were Stanford quarterbacks before starring in Denver, albeit a decade apart and at different positions.Lynch prepared for his move into the front office by serving a sort of apprenticeship under Elway, attending the 2013 NFL combine with him and sitting in with the Broncos’ GM during the draft.Yet, it was 20 years earlier when Elway first lent Lynch a helping hand, as both men recalled during one of Lynch’s scholarship lunches a couple of years ago.“I knew that Johnny was nervous, this being his first preseason game,” Elway remembered. “So, we’re in the first quarter and Johnny’s out there and our cadence back in that time was Set-Hut. I was always famous for saying, ‘Red 98 Red 98. Set-Hut!’ Well I saw Johnny Lynch out there, I said, ‘Set-Het, Red 98. Hey, Johnny Lynch!'”The shout-out impressed the rookie’s Tampa Bay teammates.“I came back to the huddle and it was so funny because all the guys said, ‘You know Elway?’ I said, yeah, we’re tight,” Lynch recounted.Years later, after they really had bonded, Lynch said Elway told him, “I was trying to loosen you up. I knew you were tight.”Elway waited until after the game, however, to deliver the tip that really helped Lynch, who went on to earn nine trips to the Pro Bowl Jeff Heuerman Jersey , including in all four of his seasons in Denver.Elway told Lynch he knew exactly when he was going to blitz and when he wasn’t just by reading his eyes.“I look at Johnny Lynch and if he kept looking at me, I knew I was OK, I knew he wasn’t coming,” Elway explained. If Lynch darted his eyes away, the Broncos QB knew Lynch was coming at him off the edge.“I guess he figured if he didn’t see me, I didn’t see him,” Elway said. “I knew when he was coming. I told him that after the game and obviously he took that to heart.”Lynch said Elway told him to “just look at me like you normally do. So, I used that throughout my career” to disguise his intentions. When he was offered the 49ers job last year, Lynch, who felt he might be too green, again sought Elway’s advice.“Yeah, he’s been awesome. He’s a great friend and he exposed me to the business,” Lynch said. “I think the biggest thing, when I had this opportunity presented to me really quickly and had a short, finite time to give them an answer, he kind of gave me the confidence: ‘You know what, you can do this, just like anything else. You can be great at it.’ And hearing that from him kind of emboldened me to feel that way.”Their respective teams are heading in different directions. The 49ers have struggled since losing quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a knee injury and are jockeying for the top overall pick in the 2019 draft. The Broncos have won three straight and are pushing for their first playoff appearance since 2015.“He helped me out in the beginning but now it’s like anything else, we’re competing,” Lynch said. “Fortunately, we’re not in the same division and all, but he’s been great. He’s one of my best friends in life and we understand that we both have to serve our organizations well, but we can also continue to be great friends and that’s what we are.” Update: Kubiak will join the Vikings staff in an advisory role. The split between the Denver Broncos and Gary Kubiak is all but official at this point as the team has given him permission to interview with other teams. His first stop will be with the Minnesota Vikings, then will interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday. The Vikings are an obvious choice as Kirk Cousins is a good fit for the scheme Kubiak wants to run and his backup will be none other than Kubiak’s chosen starter from 2016 in Trevor Siemian. The hire would make sense in a lot of ways and could be his best option to compete for a playoff spot in his next job.If Kubiak ends up interviewing and being hired by the Jaguars, then the first task he’ll need to complete is finding a quarterback. In my opinion, Joe Flacco would make the most sense for the Jaguars if they hired Kubiak. He has his best season as pro with Kubiak as his offensive coordinator and would give that team a chance to build on his defensive success in 2017. The defense seemed like it quit midway through last season. A new coach and quarterback could help fix that issue too.Either way, it sure looks like Kubiak won’t be with the Broncos anymore after this. He has been a critical part of this franchises success over the last few decades.

Steelers first quarter issues on offense are less ‘penalty driven’ than Mike Tomlin suggests Of all the ways the Pittsburgh Steelers have disappointed each week Joe Haden Jersey , one of the more frustrating aspects is the way they’ve performed on their opening drives. After three consecutive weeks of 3-and-outs to start the game, Pittsburgh changed the pace with a fumble on their third play of Week 4, once again setting a negative tone they would fail to overcome. While acknowledging the Steelers’ early struggles in their recent matchups when speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Mike Tomlin might be mistaken if he truly believes what he said to the media. In reality, none of Pittsburgh’s opening drives have seen the offense flagged for a penalty through the first four weeks of the season. Only once have they incurred a penalty during their second drive of any game. Nevertheless, the second time the offense has touched the ball in every game so far has ended with either a punt or a turnover. We will never know how far into a game the coaching staff scripts their plays on offense, but it’s safe to assume they have more than four plays prepared. Despite an entire week of practice to get ready, the Steelers continue to look unprepared in their opening drives. It remains to been seen if this is the consequence of having installed a new offensive coordinator in Randy Fichtner Vance McDonald Jersey , or perhaps the absence of Le’Veon Bell in the backfield. But it’s worth noting that Pittsburgh faced similar problems during the first few games of 2017. The issues eventually were fixed last year, and the Steelers were 9-8 on the season in terms of opening the game with a scoring drive versus punting or turning the ball over. So perhaps it is too early to panic at this stage. Over the past few weeks, Pittsburgh’s third possession of the game has become their first scoring drive and perhaps it should have been in Week 2 as well, if not for a missed field goal. A total of just six first-quarter points through four games is unacceptable for team that had championship ambitions at the start of the year. It can only be hoped that the Steelers acknowledge behind closed doors that penalties aren’t actually the problem holding them back at the start of their games. Later in his press conference, the line of questioning returned to the team’s first-quarterstruggles, and Tomlin at least offered some hope that the coaching staff might be addressing the problem logically. But if the Steelers’ brain trust doesn’t accurately assess the problems currently plaguing them, it’s hard to believe they’ll be able to fix them. Looking consistently flat and out of sync early on in games, players at every offensive position have started poorly each week — but that has nothing to do with penalties. Just a week after it was announced that CBS had protected the Pittsburgh Steelers game against the Los Angeles Chargers from being flexed to primetime in Week 13 Tyson Alualu Jersey , it turns out they have given in to pressure from the league to allow the contest to be move to Sunday night after all. Meanwhile, just as it seemed they had earned an extra night game, it appears they have also seen their encounter with the Oakland Raiders moved into an afternoon slot.Originally scheduled for 1.00 p.m ET on December 2, the Steelers game against the Chargers will now replace the previously scheduled matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. Instead of seeing Pittsburgh’s encounter with Oakland on Sunday Night Football in Week 14, the nation will now get a chance to watch the Los Angeles Rams take on the Chicago Bears in primetime on December 9.Assuming the reminder of the Steelers games are still protected by CBS in Weeks 12, 15 and 16, the only game left eligible to be flexed this season will be their matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 17. A game that will likely only be moved if it has significant playoff implications for both teams.

Sweat got stopped on a couple early reps, but he got better as the practice wore on and finished the day winning a number of battles in both 1-on-1’s and full team drills. Sweat can win with both power and speed. He lacks elite bend, but overall he’s a very impressive pass rusher.Senior Bowl Day 1 North Team Practice Notes | Fanspeak.com Lock was the best overall QB for me today as I thought he showed the best all-around combination of arm talent, accuracy and ball placement. Lock threw the ball well on deep and intermediate routes and his passes had a noticeable zip on him. Lock did have some inconsistency with his accuracy Clinton Portis Jersey , but some of that seemed to be from trying to be more anticipatory with his throws. Lock seemed to be attempting to lead receivers more than the other quarterbacks and didn’t always completely connect with them (not surprising because it was day one of practice). At age 32, Washington quarterback Josh Johnson finally got a regular-season win. He emerged from the victory over Jacksonville with an ankle injury.Johnson has fully participated in practice on both Tuesday and Wednesday in advance of a short-week Saturday game against the Titans. And Washington, which still has a realistic shot at the playoffs, will need Johnson to play and to play well if they hope to knock off the Titans and set the stage for a possible win-and-in against the Eagles — if the Vikings lose one of their last two games.Mark Sanchez is the backup to Johnson. Not practicing on Wednesday were receiver Maurice Harris (illness), quarterback Colt McCoy (fibula), tackle Ty Nsekhe (knee), and tight end Jordan Reed (ankle, foot). Limited were linebacker Ryan Anderson (hamstring), guard Tony Bergstrom (knee, ankle), defensive end Matt Ioannidis (shin), tackle Morgan Moses (ankle), running back Adrian Peterson (shoulder), defensive tackle Tim Settle (pectoral), and tackle Trent Williams (thumb, wrist).

Corey Liuget is active for the game after being suspended for the first four weeks of the season.Follow @LeviDamienRaiders week five report card vs Chargers A week after a 45 point explosion and first win of the season, the Raiders had their worst performance of the year in a 26-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The Raiders didn’t need to worry about blowing a lead in this one because at no point did they have the lead. The offensive line, in particular struggled badly.Without Donald Penn and Kelechi Osemele active for the game, Jon Feliciano and rookie third round pick Brandon Parker got the start. With the loss the Raiders fall to 1-4.Let’s take a look at the Raider week five report card.Aerial Attack: CAll things considered, two rookie tackles and a back up guard starting on the offensive line, on paper the numbers look ok.Carr finished the day 24-33, with 268 yards and one touchdown.Major points were taken off for a back breaking interception late in the third quarter. On the Chargers one yard line, Jon Gruden called a play action fake to Marshawn Lynch.Carr’s primary option was not open, Carr trying to make something out of nothing tried to make a play and the ball ended up in the hands of Melvin Ingram. After the game Jon Gruden defended his play call. “We haven’t thrown the ball in a goal to go situation all year. It’s first and goal, the decision there is to throw it and if it’s not open you throw it away.”Derek Carr has a history of at times trying to do too much, this season has been no different.“I think he just presses in some moments, he knows we have to do a lot with the ball when we have it and I think that’s what happened today,” said Gruden.Amari Cooper and Jordy Nelson combined for five catches for 53 yards. Ground Game: FThe running game was a non factor today. The blame can be shared between the offensive line being ineffective and game flow.Marshawn Lynch was only given nine opportunities to carry the ball.As a team the Raiders carried the ball 13 times for 44 yards.Offensive Line: DStarting two rookies at tackle and a back up at guard were taking into consideration when evaluating their performance.Even with the inexperience along the line today the performance was not good.Carr was sacked three times P.J. Hall Jersey , all three were given up by Kolton Miller. Also keep in mind, Joey Bosa did not play.In addition to poor run blocking, allowing pressures, the offensive line also committed several pre snap penalties which turned manageable third down situations into third and longs. Defensive Line: B+The boxscore numbers might not be indicative of the defensive lines production but this was one of their better performances overall.Bruce Irvin picked up his third sack of the season.Rookies Maurice Hurst, PJ Hall, and Arden Key all had an impact on the game.PJ Hall had a tackle for loss as well as a deflected pass and Hurst had another pass deflected.Arden Key is continuing to improve as a pass rusher, it’s only a matter of time before he begins to rack up some sacks. The Raiders defense held the Chargers to 79 yards rushing on 31 carries for a 2.5 yards per carry.Linebackers: CTahir Whitehead led the defense in tackles with nine but it was the tackle he did not make that had the biggest impact on the game.Austin Ekeler took a screen pass 40 yards for a touchdown, Whitehead whiffed badly on the play which allowed Ekeler to take it to the house.Big plays have plagued the Raiders all year long.Secondary: D-Phillip Rivers had his way with the Raiders secondary, completing 81 percent (22 of 27) of his passes for 339 yards and two touchdowns.Going into the game the Raiders defense ranked seventh in explosive pass plays allowed. An explosive play is defined as any pass play that is completed for 20 yards or more.Today the Chargers completed passes of 26, 34, 44, and 48.Early in the game the secondary made some plays to get off the field on third down but in the second half that was not the case.Special Teams: BUnlike last week the special teams were a non factor in the game.Dwayne Harris returned two kickoffs for 44 yards.Matt McCrane was made one of two field goal attempts. His miss was a long 57 yard attempt 11 seconds before the half.Overall Grade: D

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos may have lost a respected voice when they traded former captain Demaryius Thomas to the Houston Texans on Tuesday, but they certainly didn’t lose any of their gift of gab.“I don’t flinch from situations like this,” declared rookie receiver Courtland Sutton , whose emergence as a big-play threat made the 30-year-old Thomas more valuable to general manager John Elway as trade bait than a tutor.Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr., who credited Thomas with helping to make him the superstar he’s become, will spend Sunday trying to snarl DeAndre Hopkins when the Broncos (3-5) host the Texans (5-3) in Thomas’ hurried homecoming. If Harris finds himself covering Thomas, who’s replacing Will Fuller (ACL) in the Texans’ lineup, the advantage goes to …“Oh, me,” Harris said matter-of-factly.Why’s that?“I’m that good.”The same can’t be said for the Broncos overall. They’ve lost five of six despite a backfield that’s the best in the business, averaging an NFL-high 5.3 yards per carry but just 18th in rush attempts per game.Offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave is doing what Mike McCoy did in Denver before getting fired last year: spreading out the offensive formations despite a good ground game and left tackle Garett Bolles‘ holding habit.Case Keenum has been sacked 22 times, 20 of which have come with him in the shotgun, to go with a league-high 10 interceptions.Defensively, the Broncos have been stumped by cornerback Bradley Roby’s slide after his promotion from nickel back following the trade of Aqib Talib. In a contract year, they expected him to flourish as a starter. Instead, he’s been giving his man too much cushion or getting fooled by quarterbacks burning him for big plays.Middling drafts prior to this year’s crescendo has left coach Vance Joseph (8-16) without the option of benching Bolles or Roby, although cornerback Tramaine Brock’s return from a pulled hamstring and solid play over the past two weeks could foretell a return to some nickel back snaps for Roby.Elway insists the Broncos can turn things around over the second half and avoid the franchise’s first back-to-back losing seasons since 1971-72.If not, Joseph could be out of a job.Texans coach Bill O’Brien was feeling the heat himself before J.J. Watt and DeShaun Watson rounded into form, leading Houston on a five-game winning streak, something only four other teams in the Super Bowl era have done after starting 0-3.The Texans were devastated last week when receiver Will Fuller (32 catches Karl Mecklenburg Jersey , 503 yards, 4 TDs) tore an ACL, ending his season.Enter Thomas (36 catches, 402 yards, three TDs) .“It’s going to be great” having Thomas alongside Hopkins, Watson said. “Nothing really should stop the train. D.T.’s a veteran guy that can do a lot of different things and he’s played a lot football. So it’s a great opportunity for all of us to get on the same page and continue to put a lot yards in the air and put a lot points on the board.”Other subplots Sunday when Thomas returns to Denver for his first look at the visitor’s locker room and gets a peek at the “Thank you” banner being added to his 10-story-high image on the north side of Mile High Stadium:KEENUM-O’BRIENKeenum and O’Brien are mutual admirers, but they have a different view of their brief time together in Houston. In his book, Keenum wrote that when the Texans signed Ryan Mallet and cut him, “Coach O’Brien looked right at me and told me I’d never be more than a third-string quarterback in the NFL.”Not so, said O’Brien.“In all my years of coaching, I’ve never said anything like that to any player,” O’Brien said, adding, “I have a great, great amount of respect for Case Keenum.”Keenum didn’t back down, saying he “outlined it in my book,” but he did return the praise.“I’ve got so much respect for Coach O’Brien. I learned so much ball from him, just how to study defenses, what type of leverages and coverages, just dissecting defenses. He taught me so much ball,” Keenum said.“Whatever it was that was said motivated me. Every coach I’ve ever had, they’ve gotten me to where I am now. I’ve got the utmost respect for him and the whole Texans organization.”WATT A COMEBACKWatt has shaken off two years of injuries to return to superstardom with eight sacks, 10 tackles for loss, 13 quarterback hits and four forced fumbles. He’s started all eight games this season after playing in just eight games combined over the previous two seasons because of a bad back and a broken leg.“I can’t sit here and get too mad at people who thought I might be washed up or thought I might be done because I was sitting in that same boat when I was sitting at home with a cast on my leg and not being able to walk, thinking, ‘Man, will I be the same again?'” Watt said.“I still don’t think I’m there yet. I still think I’m working and trying to get back there, but it’s been fun to play, it’s been fun to win, it’s been fun to just go out there and make some plays.”YOUTH SERVEDSutton isn’t the only Broncos rookie making a huge impact. Edge rusher Bradley Chubb , the No. 5 overall pick in the draft, leads all rookies with seven sacks and is won Defensive Rookie of the Month honors for October. Undrafted running back Phillip Lindsay leads all rookies with 531 yards rushing.

Wide receiver Eli Rogers has not played a game since tearing his ACL in the Steelers’ divisional round playoff loss to the Jaguars in January Hines Ward Jersey , but he may have a chance to return to the lineup before the end of the season.Rogers has been on the physically unable to perform list since the start of the regular season and the Steelers announced on Wednesday that he has been cleared to return to practice. That opens a 21-day window for Rogers to practice with the team before they reach a deadline to activate him or shut him down for the rest of the season.Rogers re-signed with Pittsburgh after the team opted not to tender him as a restricted free agent. He had 66 catches for 743 yards and four touchdowns over the last two seasons.Antonio Brown, JuJu Smith-Schuster, James Washington, Ryan Switzer, Justin Hunter and Darrius Heyward-Bey are the receivers on the active roster, so it may take an injury to someone else for Rogers to show that he’s completely recovered. The Pittsburgh Steelers fan base was rocked a few weeks ago when there was the potential for offensive line coach Mike Munchak to become the head coach of the Denver Broncos. Fans had worried about this the year prior when the Arizona Cardinals tried to poach the Hall of Fame coach away from the Steelers. Needless to say Heath Miller Jersey , when Munchak chose to return to Pittsburgh there was a lot of rejoicing.Hoping the talented position coach would be fine just remaining the offensive line coach in the Steel City, when the Broncos wanted to interview him for the head coaching position it seemed as if the demand for him to return to the head coaching ranks would remain high for teams in search of a new coach. The Broncos didn’t choose Munchak for their new coach, but the gut punch was delivered to Steelers fans when Munchak elected to take a lateral position with the Broncos. With Munchak out of the mix, who would step up and take over? Fans recalled memories of the Swiss cheese offensive lines prior to Munchak taking over, but the Steelers wasted little time promoting long-time assistant Shaun Sarrett to take over for Munchak.Who is this Sarrett? What does he bring to the table? In a sit-down interview with Steelers.com reporter Missi Mathews, Sarrett shared how he learned from Munchak Louis Lipps Jersey , is more than ready to take over the position room and details how he is prepared and excited for the new opportunity presented to him by head coach Mike Tomlin.Check out the interview below, and hope the newly promoted Sarrett can not just pick up where Munchak left off, but also help to continue the molding Munchak did with lesser talent, turning them into starters for the black-and-gold.

Known by his teammates as “Biggie”, Marshall was a five-star recruit coming out of Long Beach Poly High School. This is the same program that has produced the likes of Desean Jackson, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Jurrell Casey, to name a few. At the time of his recruitment to USC, Marshall was rated as the #1 cornerback and #4 overall prospect in the country by ESPN. Once he stepped onto the Trojans’ campus he immediately made his presence felt. During a stellar Freshmen campaign, Marshall logged three interceptions, including two picks off of future NFL QB Josh Rosen in their game against the UCLA Bruins. Marshall’s efforts as a four-year starter earned him All PAC-12 honorable mentions in 2016 and 2017 as well as Second Team All PAC-12 honors as a Senior in 2018.Watching game tape of Marshall it is clear that he likes to get physical with opposing receivers. He often jams the receiver at the line of scrimmage with decent hand placement. He also appears to be more than a willing participant in the run game, coming up and laying hits on would be Backs trying to reach the edge. Where Marshall really excels is going up to break up passes, which is evident in the fact that he finished his college career second all-time in the PAC-12 with 36 passes defended. The knock on Marshall is his inconsistent play in his final two years on campus. While he recorded three interceptions in each his Freshmen and Sophomore seasons, Marshall did not record a single pick during his Junior or Senior year. To his defense, Marshall did struggle with nagging injuries in his final two years, which included an MCL sprain. It was the inconsistent play over his latter seasons that will likely push him to Day 3 of the NFL Draft. That could very well make him a steal for some team.StrengthsHas prototypical size for a Cornerback in the modern gamePlays with plenty of physicality at the position and often jams his coverage assignment at the line of scrimmagePlays with open hips and fluidity Josh Doctson Jersey , which he will need to put on display during drills at the CombineShows no fear of coming up to support the run defense and actually appears to welcome contactExperienced player with four years of starting for a Power Five Conference programWeaknessesNeeds to improve his tackling technique and the fundamentals of wrapping-up. This is something that hopefully can be corrected with coachingHas been known to take bad angles on open field playsGame film shows he often likes to continue contact after 5 yards from the line. This will need to get cleaned up to avoid leading the division in penaltiesHe could stand to add more functional strength. While he does like to get physical, he doesn’t always get the best of larger receivers Let’s See His Work:More Iman Marshall videosHow He Would Fit On The RedskinsAt the time of the writing of this article, Defensive Backs Coach Torrian Gray has already been jettisoned and no replacement has been named. Embattled Defensive Coordinator Greg Manusky has been given a stay of execution, for now, but it should be safe to assume changes to the defensive side of the ball are coming. With that being said, it is tough to gauge what base coverage scheme the Skins plan to deploy in 2019.Enter Iman Marshall. Regardless of what scheme the Skins use or who is calling the plays, he is the type of Cornerback that can be used in a variety of roles. He can play press, off-man, nickel, and also has the size (assuming he was to put on a few pounds) and physicality to transition to safety if need be. He will allow whoever is running the defense to have added versatility on the backend. His skill set could allow him to be the eventual replacement for Josh Norman (if he doesn’t become a cap casualty this offseason). And it would only be a bonus for the team to not have to use a high draft pick to acquire his services. The only question is, will Bruce see enough of Biggie’s potential to make it happen? Stay tuned Skins fans.
