There are no issues with functional strength, ability to use counters, or deficiencies in one phase of defense or the other. He’s not a top prospect for nothing.WeaknessesSo back to that initial question, why are we talking about Nick Bosa as a possibility at eighth overall if he’s this strong of a prospect? Well, as great as his tape is, it isn’t without wrinkles. The similarities with his brother and father haven’t ended just yet, and like those two we aren’t talking about a speedy pass rusher who you’ll see chasing down running backs on the backside like Jadeveon Clowney or Myles Garrett. And speaking of those two, each of them, along with Mario Williams—who also went first overall—ran in the 4.5, 4.6 Jarrad Davis Jersey White , and 4.7 range respectively. Bosa is more likely to run in the mid 4.8s, just like his father and brother. His other athletic traits will still keep him in the conversation as an elite athlete, but that’s going to be a concern. Another concern he shares with both his relatives is a troubling injury history. Nick Bosa enters the 2019 draft injured, Joey Bosa made a Pro Bowl after a massive season in 2017, but injuries have been the real story of his short career so far. John Bosa’s career ended due to repeated injuries and surgeries in only three seasons. It’s even worse if you consider his mother’s side, as Eric Kumerow also struggled with injuries in his short NFL career.Nick Bosa is his own man, but the similarities in physical traits and durability are pretty glaring in this instance. While athletic testing will favor him, teams who utilize production analytics will likely be less than impressed with him as well.Position Specific TraitsPass RushAs mentioned before, Bosa has a talent for breaking away from his blockers. Whether it’s his elite, signature explosiveness, bending the edge, using his hands to powerfully force blockers away, or a myriad of other ways, Bosa knows what he’s doing as a pass rusher. I wouldn’t put him on the same level as his brother was, but he’s still a very talented prospect that, when healthy, should be able to significantly improve the front seven of whoever drafts him. Run DefenseGap sound and technically proficient, Bosa doesn’t struggle in knowing where he’s supposed to be in the run game nor getting there. His tackle and TFL numbers weren’t gaudy Womens Frank Ragnow Jersey , so there’s a lot of projection based on the traits he exhibited rather than pure production. Athletic Ability Bosa flashes elite explosion, above average agility, and great functional strength to go along with prototypical NFL size. His speed is not as impressive, which may turn some off, but I expect him to rate right about where his brother and father did when they came out which is just north of elite athletically overall.Personal ProjectionLook, I’m not going to be the guy sitting here trying to be all contradictory and stating that the entire draft community at large is wrong for projecting Nick Bosa first overall. I will, however, point out that it isn’t as crazy to state that he could fall out of not only that spot but the top five. The only three pass rushers that went with the top pick all rated as 97th (Jadeveon Clowney), 99.9th (Myles Garrett), and 100th percentile (Mario Williams) athletes when they were drafted. The bar isn’t set just at being an elite athlete, but being one of the best ever. With Nick Bosa’s speed not being top notch, I don’t see him reaching those heights. Add in the injury history, and teams may shy away even if the medicals check out at the Combine. For the Lions, he’d be hard to resist if he lasts until that eighth overall pick, but you’d have to question the logic of taking an oft-injured pass rusher to replace Ezekiel Ansah. The team already knows how difficult it is to generate a pass rusher without a reliable top threat. However, dismissing them out of hand is equally foolish as taking them as gospel, and for that reason, Green Bay Packers fans must pay attention to a player who has largely been an afterthought this offseason.That player is Trevor Davis, the former University of California wideout who was a fifth-round draft pick back in 2016. Davis, who is entering his fourth year in the NFL Preston Smith Jersey , has to this point been almost entirely a non-factor as a receiver, only making special teams contributions as a gunner and return man. Indeed, Davis has just eight career receptions for 94 yards and one touchdown, compared to 448 yards on punt returns and another 791 yards on kickoff returns.However, the word out of Packers OTAs and now the first day of minicamp suggest that Davis is a different player at this point in 2019, and that he will threaten to make noise on offense for the first time. Head coach Matt LaFleur praised Davis’ work this offseason on Tuesday afternoon: “A guy who is forgotten a little bit is Trevor Davis. He’s made a lot of great plays down the field,” he said. “I’ve been really impressed with him, I feel like he’s come a long way. I think the effort, the intensity level at which he practices has certainly improved. I’m excited for him come training camp.”That answer from LaFleur came largely unprompted after he rattled off a list of the young receivers who have impressed him in the spring. For now, Marquez Valdes-Scantling is running with the first-team — notably ahead of Geronimo Allison on Tuesday when the Packers opened up with two boundary receivers, suggesting that Allison is destined for a primary role in the slot — and MVS got the first name-check from his coach. LaFleur also mentioned the other contenders, Equanimeous St. Brown, J’Mon Moore, and Jake Kumerow, before getting to Davis. He’s a very good gunner and he’s a very good cover player on kickoffs. To get a guy who can return both punts and kickoffs and cover kicks is invaluable.”Ultimately, Davis may earn his roster spot based largely on his special teams abilities. Despite holding a 21-10 lead in the second quarter, the Packers let the Kansas City Chiefs whittle away at that advantage in the second and third quarters as Tim Boyle turned back into a pumpkin and threw a pair of interceptions.All told, the Packers failed to score after halftime, dropping a 33-21 decision and finishing 2-2 in the preseason. DeShone Kizer played two series, throwing one interception and one touchdown before giving way to Boyle. The undrafted rookie was impressive early, leading two straight touchdown drives, but struggled down the stretch and finished with 127 passing yards, one touchdown, and a pair of interceptions. Here’s a look at how it happened.First QuarterAaron Jones looked shifty and strong early, giving the Packers a solid running attack for the first time all preseason and contributing as a receiver, but the quarter was dominated by quarterback play. Deshone Kizer started off terribly, airmailing an interception to Armani Watts, putting the Chiefs in great field position. Kizer actually made the correct read on the play as Lance Kendricks was wide open, he just made an awful throw. Kansas City was able to cash in quickly as the enormous tight end and former UW-Milwaukee Panther basketball player Demetrius Harris was able to post up Packer safety Jermaine Whitehead for a short touchdown.Kizer would rally on the subsequent drive, dinking and dunking his way down the field and picking up a key first down on a 10-yard scramble. The drive temporarily stalled out at the Chiefs 31-yard line, but McCarthy opted to go for it on 4th and 1, and Kizer rewarded him with a beautiful touchdown pass to Geronimo Allison, tying the game. Kizer also had another receiver wide open at the top of the formation a play earlier that would have made for an even easier score, but the throw he made was one of his best of the preseason. The Chiefs would move the ball on their next drive, but before the quarter ended rookie corner Jaire Alexander made his presence felt by stoning DeAnthony Thomas for a three yard loss.Second QuarterThe Packers would open the quarter by holding the Chiefs to a Harrison Butker field goal and Kizer’s day would be done. Tim Boyle would get to work immediately, hitting Robert Tonyan and Marquez Valdes-Scandling for big gains. Boyle had a few issues as the team approached the goal line, and Equanimeous St. Brown broke up what could have been a devastating interception when Boyle should have just thrown it away. On 4th and 1 Billy Turner Jersey , Boyle found Tonyan again for a touchdown, capping off an extremely impressive drive.The Packer defense would generate consistent pressure on the next drive, and a nice pass breakup by Greer Martini would force a punt. Trevor Davis would cough up the ball on the punt return, but the Packers would recover. Boyle would continue slinging it deep, nearly missing on a few bombs before St. Brown drew a huge pass interference penalty to get the Packers back into the end zone. Boyle‘s arm strength is not in doubt, and his ability to make good long throws and good decisions to this point was a pleasant surprise. Aaron Jones would take the ball to the one yard line and punch it in on the next play to give the Packers a 10-point lead. The Chiefs would take over with about three and a half minutes relating, and Matt McGloin would immediately answer, airing out a 62-yard bomb to Byron Pringle. Pringle beat Josh Hawkins on the play, and Hawkins never had a shot. Darrel Williams would beat Greer Martini for the 7-yard touchdown, drawing the Chiefs to within 4 and bringing the clock to the 2-minute warning. The rookie wideouts would struggle in the 2-minute drill as St. Brown would fail to keep his feet in on the sideline, and J’Mon Moore would suffer yet another terrible drop. Boyle forced the ball on 3rd down, and JK Scott was called on to punt, booming a 47-yarder and giving the Chiefs their own 2-minute drill practice.Fortunately, Hawkins and Demetri Goodson played some tight coverage and Montravius Adams provided decent pressure, forcing a punt and giving Boyle the ball back with a minute to go. Unfortunately the Packers couldn’t do anything with it, and JK Scott would hit a high hanger, giving the Chiefs just 22 seconds from their own territory.The half would end on a Herb Waters interception of McGloin’s Hail Mary, and the Packers would take a 21-17 lead into the locker room.Third QuarterThe Chiefs opened with a short field goal drive highlighted mostly by the inaccuracy of new Kansas City quarterback Chase Litton. Butker would knock it through from 38 to bring the Chiefs within one.The Packers went three-and-out, and Byron Pringle struck again, catching yet another impressive bomb against the Packer secondary. That led to yet another Butker field goal, and the Chiefs would take the lead. Boyle would then make his worst throw of the night with four minutes left in the third quarter.On 2nd and 10 he attempted to air one out to tight end Emanuel Byrd, but he never set himself and didn’t step into the throw Adrian Amos Jersey , floating it into coverage. Armani Watts made an easy pick, and the Chiefs would make the Packers pay as Litton hit Jordan Smallwood on a ridiculous lame duck that Donatello Brown was unable to get back to. Butker hit yet another field goal as the final quarter of preseason began. Fourth QuarterTwo minutes into the quarter, Boyle was picked again while targeting DeAngelo Yancey. To add insult to injury, former Packer Makinton Dorleant took this one back for a touchdown, and the Chiefs extended their lead to 33-21. Boyle was an erratic mess in the fourth quarter. His mechanics and pocket presence have been solid all preseason, and he started the game with the same courage in the face of the rush, but as the game went on he started bailing out on his throws. The fourth quarter was the culmination of the decline of his mechanics. He simply couldn’t deliver to his receivers and made several poor decisions. On the penultimate drive of the quarter, Boyle let his eyes fall almost immediately and ended up eaten alive by the pass rush. The Chiefs were content to kill clock for the majority of the finale, and it would end 33-21 after several boring runs by 5th string nobodies. The starters were generally fine, and preseason darlings Robert Tonyan and Marquez Valdes-Scantling stood out, but the other rookie wide receivers — J’Mon Moore in particular — disappointed. The depth in the secondary unsurprisingly remains questionable as well. In the last preseason game you look for the down-roster players to win jobs. Tonight, it’s likely that far more players lost jobs than won them. APC writers share their ballots for the NFL’s most prestigious awards."It’s awards season! Leading the league with 20.5 sacks from an interior line position is just stupid.I couldn’t vote for Saquon Barkley for offensive ROY, mainly because the team was actively worse when feeding him the football. Give it to Mayfield, who already justified John Dorsey’s belief in him as the best quarterback in this draft class.Jason B. Aaron Donald made a similarly convincing argument for the Defensive Player of the Year award. Even when the Rams defense struggled during the middle portions of the season, Donald provided game-tilting plays, including a drive-killing QB hurry that helped seal a win over the Packers in Week 8. Donald’s dominance continued through the end of the regular season and into the playoffs. As for the rookie awards, Baker Mayfield helped turn the Browns from the laughing stock of the NFL into a team that still had something to play for in December. Several candidates deserve consideration for Defensive Rookie of the Year, but Derwin James transformed the Chargers’ defensive schematics in a way no other first-year defender did.While Andy Reid probably won’t win Coach of the Year honors, he did more to put his team in position to win than any other headman this season. More so than even the Rams or Saints, the Chiefs offensive design did the most to challenge defenses and fracture their weak points. Mahomes’ success, while very much a product of his own skill and efforts, came much earlier than nearly anyone expected due to Reid’s offensive infrastructure and tutelage. If he only had a better defense and he might be playing in the Super Bowl next week. Like Mahomes, I think Aaron Donald is the easy choice for Defensive Player of the Year. He was unblockable for most of the year and lead the league with 20.5 sacks. For offensive rookie, I’m going Saquon Barkley. Barkely lead all rookies with 1,307 yards rushing and finished third in among rookies with 721 yards receiving (only 100 yards behind leader Calvin Ridley). He had 15 touchdowns and didn’t lose a fumble all year. Barkley was easily the most potent rookie to touch the ball all year and will be a force for years to come for the Giants. Darius Leonard gets my vote for top defensive rookie. He lead the entire league in tackles and it wasn’t close. He had 163 and number two was Blake Martinez with 144. He proved he can run sideline to sideline and cause turnovers, forcing four fumbles while recovering two. He can also drop into coverage as he had 10 pass deflections with two interceptions. Coach of the Year goes to Matt Nagy. Very few saw Nagy succeeding with the Bears this quickly. They were definitely the surprise team of the season and has given the Bears hope for the future. I know Baker was wonderful for a rookie quarterback and appears to have a bright future in the league, but Nelson was a legit All-Pro, solidifying a unit that helped lead the Colts back to the playoffs. Linemen never get the credit they deserve for the impact they have on teams (David Bakhtiari is nodding), and Nelson was truly that good. And for as good as Matt Nagy was for the Bears in 2018, there are teenagers who play a lot of Madden who could have installed a better offense than the Fox/Loggains coaching staff put together. That’s only a slight exaggeration. What Reich did, installing a scheme to maximize the lack of talent around Luck, with the help of Nelson, was nothing short of spectacular. This made him the second-highest graded player on the team behind Green (85.2) and the 12th ranked receiver in the entire league.Here’s what they had to say about Boyd:His money down rank coincidentally the same as his overall rank, but it shows how indispensable he was to the Bengals’ offense. Boyd quickly became Andy Dalton’s safety net and was just as, if not more, reliable on those downs than Green.Boyd really opened up the offense for the Bengals, which is why they scored over 30 points a game when everyone was healthy. Boyd took the pressure off of Green Tyler Boyd Jersey , which hadn’t happened at the NFL yet. Not only was Boyd’s production good for his own benefit, but it was also helped Green and Dalton have great seasons.But injuries stacked up, and the Bengals’ offense took a nosedive. Despite a general downtick in yards and points, Boyd’s production never slumped.Unlike Hill and Allen, Boyd didn’t have consistent talent around him for the whole season. That makes his performance that much more impressive.Thankfully for head coach Zac Taylor, he will have a lot of weapons to work with on offense. The question will be if he can put it all together. The Bengals 53-man roster has its lowest number of rookies on it all year, and only five played in their debacle against the Chiefs on Sunday night. So much more went wrong than just some underwhelming performances from members of their rookie class, but we’re always here to tell you how each did and where they can go from here. This is our rookie report from the Bengals 45-10 loss to the Chiefs.Jessie BatesThe Patrick Mahomes show torched nearly everybody on the Bengals defense, and that very much included Bates. Mahomes’ offense orchestrated by Chiefs head coach Andy Reid picked apart the Bengals back seven Carl Lawson Jersey , and Bates struggled to keep up with the constant vertical attack, often times being late to pick up on deep routes and having to work all over the field to make up for missed tackles in front of him.The free safety finished with a season-high of 12 combined tackles, but only two solo tackles that can be considered “stops”. Bates also played a decent amount of snaps in the slot to compensate for the lack of Darqueze Dennard. Playing against Jameis Winston next week should be a little easier in comparison.Sam HubbardThere’s been plenty of talk about Carl Lawson not getting enough playing time in the past two weeks. Hubbard has played the same number of snaps as Lawson in that same time frame, and has produced even less.Part of this was defensive tackle Adolphus Washington getting exposure in the rotation in their nickel front. It’s fair to say that the Hubbard’s ineffectiveness as a pass rusher is also part of his lack of playing time. Hubbard simply isn’t winning off the snap and getting off blocks, which has really been the story of his year aside from a few splash plays. It’d be nice to see him involved in stunts and twists instead of occasionally dropping back in coverage. Nevertheless, Hubbard was stifled once again in both phases of the game. Malik JeffersonAnother underwhelming performance from the Bengals’ linebacking corps, another game where Jefferson was used only for special teams. If Jefferson can’t get on the field over Hardy Nickerson, he’s probably going to be the Christian Westerman of the defense. He did notch his second tackle on special teams.Jefferson played 17 snaps on special teams, and has averaged 16.8 snaps per game as a valuable member of the unit Womens Michael Johnson Jersey , which is fifth on the team.Mark WaltonEventually Marvin Lewis saw enough from the skill position players on offense that put up 10 points on one of the worst defenses in the NFL in 55 minutes. Outside of the offensive line, the second string offense took the field for the final drive of the game, and Walton earned 10 hard-fought yards on four carries.Because of Walton’s usage in garbage time, his touch/snap percentage hit a season-high of 38%. When the game is at least somewhat competitive though, he’s only on the field to be a decoy in the passing game, as the team doesn’t exactly seem to trust him in pass protection any more than they don’t trust Joe Mixon to do so when Giovani Bernard is healthy. It’s difficult to see things changing for Walton while Bernard is still out.Darius PhillipsAfter making his season debut last week, Phillips was officially thrust into the backup slot cornerback role behind Tony McRae. He played 15 snaps and made one tackle. He was really only targeted twice, and both ended in short completions. Phillips clicked and closed on the coverage a lot better on the first play compared to the second play.Phillips was already a minimal contributor on special teams, but his involvement in the defense seemed to detract his time with the kick and punt teams even more as he only played three snaps there. With how well Alex Erickson is returning the kicks he can actually return Jonah Williams Cincinnati Bengals Jersey , Phillips isn’t needed there. But Erickson has nine fair catches to his six punt returns. The Bengals offense could use a boost from Phillips returning punts as a change of pace from the hesitant Erickson.Did not playBilly PricePrice got his walking boot removed last week and was working on the rehab field with Bernard, but didn’t get any official practice time in. We’ll find out if he’s made any substantial progress later this week.Auden Tate isn’t listed here because he’s not on the active roster anymore. The fit makes sense. The team has plenty of salary cap space. It’s also true that Quinn tried to secure one throughout last years offseason and during the regular season. It’s a position that the Lions believe is important. But is the eighth pick really the right way to go with that position? Especially considering that this tight end class is one of the deepest ever. It seems as though Quinn may not think so. But it is smokescreen season, so we’ll see soon enough. They resigned defensive end Angelo Blackson for 3-years $12 million. Entering this offseason Blackson, Brandon Dunn Benardrick McKinney Jersey White , Christian Covington, and Joel Heath (RFA) were all free agents. Four players who can’t rush the passer, and play on a run defense with J.J. Watt Stephen Anderson Jersey White , Jadeveon Clowney, Benardrick McKinney, and Zach Cunningham. It seems like Houston picked Blackson of the four to stay here. I’m assuming he’ll play more 3-4 defensive end. I don’t get paying this much for a marginal player. Blackson is a decent run stopper on a defense with some of the best run stoppers in football D'Onta Foreman Jersey White , but he can’t rush the passer. He had one sack and two quarterback hits last season. Hopefully this is just a depth signing because Houston didn’t want to have too much turnover on the defensive line, and the Texans still make a commitment to finding an interior pass rusher.]]> elaine95
