This Saturday, Ted Thompson was inducted into the hallowed halls at Lambeau Field as one of the team’s greats.Thompson took the general manager job in 2005, taking over from coach/GM Mike Sherman. His first draft pick was unquestionably his best, as he selected Aaron Rodgers with the 24th selection that year. Thompson then hired Mike McCarthy as the Packers’ head coach the following season and helped McCarthy oversee the transition from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers at quarterback in 2008.Under Thompson’s leadership, the Packers made four NFC Championship Games, winning once in 2010 to advance to Super Bowl XLV. There, the Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25. Practically the entire Packers’ roster on that team was drafted or signed by Thompson, with only a few notable exceptions; just two of the Packers’ starters in that game (Chad Clifton and Donald Driver) preceded Thompson. To get prepped for Sunday’s game, we caught up with David Choate of The Falcoholic to get his thoughts on the inter-conference matchup.Patrick Judis: Your rookie wide receiver (Calvin Ridley) had a coming out party with three touchdowns last week. Was that a matter of the Saints paying too much attention to Julio Jones or is he already become one of the Falcons’ top targets?David Choate: Really, it was a combination of both. Calvin Ridley is an unusually gifted route runner for a rookie receiver, and that combined with some slick moves and excellent speed made him hard to cover for a bunch of decent Saints cornerbacks. But it’s also true that especially early on, the Saints were putting a lot of focus on stopping Julio, and Ridley was able to work against favorable one-on-one matchups. He was still a factor after the Saints started paying more attention to him, though, including a huge pass interference call that came when he was dragged to the two by a pair of defenders on a ball that bounced off his helmet.I was wary about Ridley’s immediate impact heading into the year, but the last two weeks have shown he can be a huge factor for this passing game on a weekly basis. As long as teams have to account for Julio Jones, he should have his opportunities to eat, and his early rapport with Matt Ryan is encouraging.PJ: Two weeks in a row Atlanta has allowed a quarterback to throw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns. Do you think they will be able to stop that trend with Andy Dalton coming to town?DC: If they do, it won’t be by much. Atlanta’s defense is in rough shape right now, with both starting safeties down for the year and star middle linebacker Deion Jones out for several weeks. The Falcons may get their best pass rusher, Takkarist McKinley, back for this one. They are still dealing with a front four that hasn’t applied much pressure, at least one shaky safety option Bobby Hart Jersey , a diminished group of linebackers and cornerbacks who are great on paper but have had some missed tackles and coverage miscues early on. This should still be a decent defense, but it’s not a great one, and if Cincinnati is smart enough to attack mismatches with Giovani Bernard and their tight ends against safety Jordan Richards and middle linebacker Duke Riley, they should have no trouble piling up the passing yards. PJ: Who is an underrated player on either side of the ball that you think isn’t getting enough national attention?DC: On offense, it’s Ito Smith. The rookie has been insanely impressive over the last two weeks for a fourth round running back who did absolutely nothing in preseason and during the first week. He’s shown excellent hands, shiftiness and speed, parlaying those into consistent yardage against the Panthers and Saints. He has to be accounted for, and teams that underestimate him might find him rumbling through the middle of the defense.On defense, it’s Damontae Kazee. He’ll be filling in for free safety Ricardo Allen, who went on injured reserve this week, and offers the kind of physicality and playmaking ability at the position that the Falcons are lucky to have in the face of the injuries they’re dealing with. I’m very worried about Richards next to him, but Kazee is a good player who should only get better with more playing time. He just needs to be careful about how he tackles. PJ: Could you please introduce Bengals fans to the players who will be going against the right side of the offensive line, so they know who will be in Dalton’s face all game.DC: On the right side, you’ll be facing off against Vic Beasley and Grady Jarrett quite a bit. Beasley has been beyond disappointing thus far in 2018, with one sack and very few pressures in three games. He’s always been quick, but his development has stagnated and we keep waiting for him to improve and become the fearsome edge presence the team figured they were drafting in the top ten. Maybe this is the week he gets it going, but I’m wary about that.Jarrett’s much more of a threat. He’s leading the team in pressures and is a terrific run defender, and he often winds up in the backfield. I’d be worried he’ll be taking Dalton’s lunch a couple of times this game. PJ: What is your prediction for the game?DC: At the risk of sounding like a homer Alex Redmond Jersey , the Falcons should win this. Their defense scraped bottom at week ago, but they’re getting their top pass rusher McKinley back by the sounds of it, and the offense is terrific. Despite an aggressive revamping of the offensive line last offseason, the unit’s struggles persisted for the Bengals, specifically with the interior. Last season it was a mix of rookie center Billy Price getting his feet under him and Alex Redmond being far too inconsistent to warrant being a starter. Of course Clint Boling remind the bright spot at left guard, but it still shouldn’t be shocking to see some competition brought in at center and right guard.Competition at center does not equate to the potential benching of Price though, but would open the possibility to moving him over to right guard, which is a position he also played a considerable amount at Ohio State. The Bengals have nice options with Trey Hopkins and Christian Westerman on the roster already, but with Zac Taylor taking over, we shouldn’t expect him and his staff to automatically bank on players from the previous regime alone.Pro Football Focus recently released their top 10 interior lineman set to be free agents. Although it is really a top nine since the Colts guard, Mark Glowinski, recently signed an extension to stay with the Indianapolis Colts. While it’s easy to say Cincinnati should go out and sign a few of the top five names, that really isn’t how the Bengals build their teams, in case you’ve forgotten. These will be players who could be in the Bengals’ self-imposed budget while also providing valuable depth or starting ability. Here are some guys they should look at and how likely it’d be the Bengals would land them.Most likely to signRodger Saffold, guard, Rams: Saffold is second on PFF’s list Bobby Hart Jersey , but there is solid reasoning as to why the Bengals represent a logical match. The most obvious connection is Taylor having coached the Rams the past two seasons. This would be valuable for Taylor in his attempt to establish the kind of locker room that he is hoping to bring over from Los Angeles. It is always imperative to have veteran players bridge the gap. Saffold will also be 31 when the season starts, which means some of the higher spenders may stray away from adding him as any long term deal could backfire on them.Playing next to Andrew Whitworth at left guard, Saffold played a key role in the Rams’ offensive line being so successful last season, and he ranked as the ninth best guard in the NFL, according to PFF. Saffold would likely make the move to right guard, but that shouldn’t be too much of a problem for the veteran.John Miller, guard, Bills: Miller is one of those low risk type free agents. He doesn’t have an amazing track record recently, but he is only 25 years old. So, he still just hitting the prime of his career. PFF also only charged him with one sack in 529 pass attempts this past season, which is a major upgrade over Redmond’s performance. Miller has the floor of being a valuable backup with the possibility of finally turning into a starter in a new location. A.J. Cann, guard, Jaguars: Cann started off his career looking like he would turn into a pretty good starting guard, but he has fallen off the past two seasons. He will also turn 28 in October. He is another low risk player who isn’t likely to get a blockbuster deal in free agency. Cincinnati took a chance on a former Jaguar who wasn’t quite reaching expectations before when they acquire safety Reggie Nelson, so it is possible they try to repeat history and revive Cann’s career.An outside shotMatt Paradis, center, Broncos: Paradis is PFF’s top ranked interior offensive lineman free agent, but the reason Cincinnati has a little bit of a chance could very well be business related. Paradis will be turning 30 in October Deshaun Davis Cincinnati Bengals Jersey , which means he likely realizes he has one big contract left in his career, and especially after playing on a sixth rounder’s contract the past few years, he will likely look for his payday. The only way Cincinnati has a shot is if teams are’t willing to give him the big deal he deserves. He is coming off a broken fibula in Week 9, which could scare some potential suitors away. The Bengals should attempt to swoop in with a one-year deal similar to what they’ve attempted to do with veteran linebackers over the years.Paradis is easily one of the best centers in the NFL, and he could ultimately start right away while moving Price over to guard. Paradis would also be a great teacher for Price during that season, so if he were to leave in free agency the following season, at least Price would hopefully be more prepared to take back over. So many things have to go right for this to end up happening, but it isn’t out of the realm of possibilities. Ramon Foster, guard, Steelers: This isn’t as much of a long shot, but it really depends on Foster’s market in free agency. At the age of 33, his quality of play has gotten better over time, and he’s been a consistent component to one of the most dominating offensive lines over the past few years with the Steelers. Even if is on a short term deal, he could be a great veteran to bring in and help turnaround the Bengals struggling offensive line. It still isn’t ideal to expect anything from Uzomah again this week, but maybe they will learn that he can be relied on after last week. Temper expectationsJohn Ross (Bengals WR): Ross added his seventh touchdown catch of the season last week, but it was his only catch of the game as his other two targets were wildly off target. It is rough because it has clearly been a struggle to get Ross and Driskel on the same page, but this is a good stepping stone going into Ross’ third season.Jeff Driskel (Bengals QB): Driskel was the king or garbage time last week. He scored two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter, but he only threw for 133 yards. That just won’t get it done.Bengals defense: Cincinnati has had issues keeping teams from getting in the end zone.
