For Seattle’s defense to be at its most dominant, having a true center fielder to cover the deep middle third of cover 3 is preferable. Thomas’ prescient range is generational and at a Hall of Fame. What if John Schneider tried to give Carroll more range back there? What if he wanted to upgrade the hesitancy and bad tackling of Tedric Thompson? What if he wanted to add more team speed on the back end?In each draft, there are a small amount of safeties that meet the “rangy enough for NFL single-high” requirement. He got over the top of deep sideline routes from two-high. Stuff in Thompson’s immediate vicinity would be blanketed by the 21-year-old (22 in February) and swatted incomplete. (Deionte*, my apologies)Man coverage and matchingThompson’s ability to cover in tighter spaces extended to man coverage, where Saban’s matching placed him in man-to-man assignments. He could get over the top of routes playing in two-high, but also rotate downwards as a safety. As a down safety, he covered receivers’ routes with impressive physicality, footwork, patience and route recognition.Range limitationsBy this point, you are probably asking why on earth the Seahawks shouldn’t draft Deionte Thompson? Answer: his range isn’t “crazy” or even sideline to sideline, like some analysts have claimed. Sure Bradley McDougald Jersey , Saban’s scheme demands that his middle of the field safety plays primarily from hashmark to hashmark, meaning that seam routes will hold them there and limit the range potential. Yet, even with that limiter factored in, Thompson’s range still disappointed from the plaudits he’d received. He wasn’t helped by limited burst or long speed—I’d be shocked if he ran quicker than the 4.5s. His tape is full of “nearly” plays that he’ll get further away from making in the NFL. Minkah Fitzpatrick managed to make some of these plays. Thompson couldn’t. It wasn’t just from single-high positions; he struggled trying to get to the honey hole in a “palms” assignment too. (Take all of #2 vertically unless #2 goes out in first 5 yards, then take all of #1 vertically). None of this looks like a safety who Seattle would take relatively high. Hit powerThompson is a vicious safety who was always trying to get a hit in on the ballcarrier and punished receivers catching in the weak spots of the defensive coverage. Encouragingly, he led with his shoulder rather than his head when going for the oncoming train impact.Dangerous and ineffective tacklingHowever, his tackling technique needs refinement and is borderline dangerous. He does not maintain a near-hip relationship when approaching the ball-carrier, resulting in overaggressive pursuit angles. He lunges into tackles, resulting in misses and little wrap. He ducks his head into tackles, resulting in an increased risk in paralysis and missed targets. Better angles, footwork and form is needed. In summary...not a SeahawkIn summary, Thompson’s flashes don’t outweigh the fact he hasn’t put on tape pure single-high safety traits. He’s a high football IQ player that will make plays, but his best fit is as a two-high safety who can be moved around in the NFL. If Seattle wants to take a shot at a rangy single-high safety, they should aim for the lofty heights of Mount Rainier and look at the raw Nasir Adderley. I covered him in this Draft on tape. When they are playing the Jets, all they have to do is look for Darnold’s leg raise and Long’s tap. The defenders can then time the snap and get a jump start firing into the backfield.To prevent that from happening, the offense has to mix things up and have more than one way of executing the silent count. With Blake Bortles likely to be cut and Cody Kessler proving incapable of leading an offense, the Jaguars are likely to look at options through both free agency and the draft, and possibly even a trade. One such name that has been linked to Jacksonville is Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco. While Flacco still has time remaining on his current contract, it is all but certain that Baltimore will be moving on from its Super Bowl-winning quarterback this offseason due to the emergence of Lamar Jackson. According to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora, there is mutual interest between Jacksonville and Flacco’s camp. La Canfora also thinks the Jaguars are interested in Nick Foles and Ryan Tannehill. Tannehill still has two years left on his current contract with the Miami Dolphins, but his tenure has been filled with injuries and inconsistent play, and the new regime in Miami (likely to hire New England Patriots linebacker coach Brian Flores as head coach when possible) may just want to move on and start from scratch. I’m not sure he would be the solution in Jacksonville, anyway. Foles has proven has a very capable and clutch quarterback in a limited sample size. His contract situation is an interesting one. From my understanding, there is a mutual option for 2019. The Eagles can opt to extend Foles’ contract through 2019 with a $20 million price tag (which later becomes a fully guaranteed deal), and Foles can then agree to stay in Philly or opt out and test free agency. Both Philly and Foles know there will be a market for him, so the Eagles are likely to do what they can to retain him and try to recoup some of his value via trade. The Eagles have salary cap issues, though Blake Bortles Jersey , and may opt out of the deal rather than agreeing to pay a backup quarterback $20 million. The issue here is that the Jaguars may not be able to/willing to afford Foles’ asking price in free agency. At this point, this is nothing more than speculation. The Jaguars are highly likely to draft a quarterback early in April, and are almost certainly going to sign/trade for a veteran this offseasonto pair with the rookie, though which specific player that is remains to be seen. For as awful as Woods was on that game-winning drive for the Chiefs, for as awful as Musgrave was at the end of the game, Joseph is their boss and his coaches weren’t prepared — yet again. He also adds another sterling bullet point to his resume: This is the first time in 14 years the Broncos lost a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter at home. This performance by Siemian led to this observation from our friends at the Daily Norseman.We all this Siemian a lot during the two forgettable seasons he started for the Broncos.Much like last season for the Broncos during the preseason, Kyle Sloter came in after Siemian(or Lynch) and cleaned up the mess they made. Do they make the same mistake the Broncos did and overlook Kyle Sloter and stick with Siemian or do they give him the much-deserved promotion? This also gives us one more example of just how bad the quarterback position was for the Broncos the past two seasons. The guy who started back to back week one games and started 24 games at quarterback for them is in danger of being demoted to third-string or potentially being cut by the Vikings. Meanwhile, we all know the days for Paxton Lynch are likely numbered in Denver and Brock Osweiler is somewhere being tall and mediocre in Miami. This is why we need to give Head Coach Vance Joseph a fresh start in 2018. Yes, he had his issues in 2017, but the quarterback position is the most important position in all of sports and his options last season were downright awful. This all led to the downward spiral and a shit of a season that we all witnessed last year. So let us be thankful that we have moved past these awful times and can find success again with Case Keenum under center. Also, let us hope that Kyle Sloter finally gets the opportunity he really deserves. I’ll call him 50/50.Five takeaways from the Jets’ preseason loss to the Giants Here are five thoughts I have from the Jets’ preseason loss to the Giants last night.Sam Darnold should be the starting quarterback Week 1.Again, Darnold had a pedestrian stat line. He was only 8 of 16 for 84 yards. The stats were deceptive. Before I went to bed last night, I rewatched all of his throws to try and make some sense of the disparity between his numbers and my perception. I was a little sleepy when I was watching, but of the eight incompletions http://www.jetsfootballauthentics.com/sam-darnold-jersey-authentic , I saw four hit his receiver in the hand, three throwaways, and one batted down at the line. So every single pass Darnold where Darnold was targeting a receiver last night and got it over the line was on target.This isn’t to say he played a perfect game. I saw two notable rookie mistakes. One was an intentional grounding penalty. The other was a clock management mistake near the end of the first half. I also haven’t gone through to make sure he made the proper read on every play.But the biggest takeaway from preseason should be that Darnold doesn’t seem to be in over his head. We aren’t talking about throwing Christian Hackenberg to the lions when he can’t execute basic functions. There are going to be moments where Darnold makes mistakes and looks very bad. But there aren’t any basic skills Darnold needs to develop from the practice field and the bench. I don’t see the benefit in holding him out.2. The tight end hype should end.There has been this weird disparity between the amount of hype the tight ends have been getting from training camp practices and the lack of talent/upside the group has. Things came to a head last night as the tight ends played a brutal collective gain. I estimated that Sam Darnold lost somewhere between 50 and 55 passing yards from throws that hit his receivers in the hands and were not converted into receptions. The tight ends were responsible for approximately 40 of those yards on 3 such passes. The group also accounted for 5 penalties.Jeremy Bates’ philosophy is built on using the tight end position, but there just isn’t any quality there for the Jets.3. Special teams was so bad that it was comedic.During the Kotite Era, the Jets special teams coach was a guy named Ken Rose. Some of the stuff you read seems implausible.The Ken Rose era is the only thing to which I can equate last night’s performance.The Jets committed four penalties on special teams, fumbled a kickoff away, missed an extra point, and allowed a punt return for a touchdown.The only comforting thing is that things have to go up. It’s impossible to sustain a performance that bad over the long haul.4. The cornerback play is kind of concerning.The Jets have more money tied up in the cornerback position this year than any team other than the Houston Texans. Without a single proven pass rusher on the team, this defense is going to lean heavily on coverage holding up.It Womens Terrelle Pryor Sr. Jersey , therefore, is disconcerting to see Eli Manning throw for 188 yards in the first half. Trumaine Johnson held up his end of the bargain and played very well.
