Globe Valves
Globe valves are named for their spherical bodies. They have two halves separated by an internal baffle, or wall, causing different flow path than ball valves and other rotary-type valves. These valves actuate in a linear movement.

Oil and gas producers control globe valves by using pneumatic or electric power to actuate them based on a signal received from a pilot. Depending on the type, globe valves can provide either on/off or modulating service.

Examples of globe valves include Kimray’s high pressure control valves.

Full and Reduced-Port Ball Valves

Full or reduced-port ball valves are used in many on/off applications in various industries to control flow. Full-port ball valves have a bore diameter that matches the pipe diameter. Hence, this allows for little to no pressure drop across the valve.

Standard-port valves have a bore diameter one bore size down from the end connection, while reduced-port valves can have bore diameters with any number of bore sizes down from the end connection size. Full port

Ball Valve

A full port or more commonly known full bore ball valve has an over-sized ball so that the hole in the ball is the same size as the pipeline resulting in lower friction loss. Flow is unrestricted but the valve is larger and more expensive

Reduced port or reduced bore

Ball Valve

In Reduced port (more commonly known as reduced bore) ball valves, flow through the valve is one pipe size smaller than the valve's pipe size resulting in flow area being smaller than pipe.

V Port

Ball Valve

A V port ball valve has either a 'v' shaped ball or a 'v' shaped seat. This allows for linear and even equal percentage flow characteristics. When the valve is in the closed position and opening is commenced the small end of the 'v' is opened first allowing stable flow control during this stage.

Many industries encounter problem with residues in the ball valve. Where the fluid is meant for human consumption, residues may also be health hazard, and when where the fluid changes from time to time contamination of one fluid with another may occur.

Trunnion

Ball Valve

A trunnion ball valve has additional mechanical anchoring of the ball at the top and the bottom, suitable for larger and higher pressure valves (say, above 10 cm and 40 bars).A floating ball valve is one where the ball is not held in place by a trunnion. In normal operation, this will cause the ball to float downstream slightly. This causes the seating mechanism to compress under the ball pressing against it.

Ball Valve

Three- and four-way have an L- or T-shaped hole through the middle. The different combinations of flow are shown in the figure. It is easy to see that a T valve can connect any pair of ports, or all three, together, but the 45 degree position which might disconnect all three leaves no margin for error. The L valve can connect the center port to either side port, or disconnect all three, but it cannot connect the side ports together.

Multi-port ball valves with 4 ways, or more, are also commercially available, the inlet way often being orthogonal to the plane of the outlets. For special applications, such as driving air-powered motors from forward to reverse, the operation is performed by rotating a single lever four-way valve. The 4-way ball valve has two L-shaped ports in the ball that do not interconnect, sometimes referred to as an "×" port.

One-Piece pvc ball valve
This is the most common type of PVC ball valve, with a one-piece body and a quarter-turn handle. These valves can be either threaded or socket. Threaded ball valves can be attached using pipe dope or teflon tape, which can be unscrewed. This makes maintenance straightforward, but make sure you shut off water flow before removing your valve. Ball valves with socket ends are more difficult, as they cannot be removed from the system.

True Union PVC Ball Valve
True union PVC ball valves (like the one shown on the right) are a more modern and efficient type of ball valve that have a removable body. This makes maintenance easy regardless of end type. They can usually be taken apart easily as well, with removable stems and seatings.

Metal Three-Piece Ball Valve
While we are focusing on PVC ball valves in this post, metal ball valves are also very common, especially for home brewing systems. These provide an extra level of purity that is hard to achieve with plastic ball valves. These are usually found in smaller sizes, from 1/2" to 2". Locked Open
A locked open ball valve is a ball valve that uses a locking mechanism to lock the valve into place in an open position. By using a lock, a user ensures that the valve does not close by mistake when it should be open.

Necessity
People working in the vicinity of pressure-relief devices should be protected from malfunctions. Therefore, the valve should function properly at all times. The locking function ensures that this safety objective is met because the valve cannot accidentally malfunction.

Advantages
Frequent checking of these valves is necessary to ensure they are functioning properly without closing down the entire process -- which is time-consuming and expensive. Commonly, block valves are installed locked in the open position so that they can easily be checked while the process is still running.
