Their fanbases don’t like each other, so when the teams swapped safeties in free agency no one was surprised to see each side proclaim their new safety to be the better safety of the two. But which safety is better? And how do they fit into their defenses? I’ll attempt to answer these questions and more in this two-part film study!We’ll discuss Clinton-Dix and Amos as players in this article, part 1, before assessing how they fit into their new defenses in part 2. As usual, if the videos don’t show up on your platform simply look for the italicized portion of the paragraph, it’ll be a link to the video I’m referencing. Without any further ado, let’s get into it!Ha Ha Clinton-DixWatching HCD play the pass is, simply put, a lot of fun. He exhibits all the traits you’d expect of a true free safety, namely range and anticipation on deep throws like those shown here. When the ball is in the air, Ha Ha’s at his best.Pay close attention to Clinton-Dix’s hips at the release point of each throw and you’ll see what makes him so effective — Ha Ha’s big plays come from his ability to get his hips turned towards the intended receiver before the QB’s even finished throwing the ball. This is what “instinct” looks like, and it’s quintessential to making plays as a free safety. Ha Ha’s instincts make him dangerous.But the ball isn’t always in the air, and that’s bad news for Clinton-Dix. Whether he’s missing tackles outright Bobby Massie Jerseys 2019 , giving up extra yardage, or getting blocked into oblivion, Ha Ha rarely contributes positively against the run/short pass game. The play where Jason Witten blocks him from stopping a touchdown bothers me the most — Ha Ha doesn’t seem to make much of an effort to escape Witten’s grasp, and the Packers give up a touchdown because of it.HCD also tends to struggle when taking angles towards runners, often overrunning them altogether. While obviously not a good trait, this does help explain why HCD so rarely plays downhill — there’s no sense attacking an RB/WR downfield if you’re not confident you can finish the tackle. Regardless, his angles and tackling cost his defenses yards.All of this said, it should be noted that Ha Ha can still fill holes against the run (play 1) and actually plays quite well when moving laterally. He seems comfortable shuffling sideways, even taking on blocks well while doing so. He misses many less tackles from his shuffle too. This gives me the impression that Clinton-Dix’s tackling problems come primarily from situations where he has to attack downfield and that he becomes a much more consistent tackler when allowed to let the runner come to him.The Verdict: Ha Ha Clinton-Dix displays traits of a classic free safety, doing his best work with the ball in the air. He has experience playing single-high, two-deep and NCB, making him a versatile tool for Pagano to use. Tackling/downhill play is a legitimate concern, but his instinct in coverage and turnover generation skills go a long way towards making up for his poor tackling.Now let’s move on to...Adrian AmosLet’s start with what he’s best known for — reliable positioning and great form tackling. Amos plays fearless, active football and consistently meets runners as they breach the line. I love this last play because it highlights’ Amos tenacity when rallying to runners.Amos also has a reputation among Bears fans as being a lackluster cover safety, and that’s simply not fair. Amos does a great job covering anything in front of him White Akiem Hicks Jerseys , tracking short throws well and demolishing WRs at the catch point. He’s also sound in man-to-man coverage (play 3).Amos’s coverage struggles come in situations that ask for instinct rather than speed, namely deeper throws. The helmet-to-helmet hit on Ertz, for example, could’ve been avoided if he’d reached the sidelines quickly enough to play the ball. Instead, what should’ve been a 3rd down stop becomes a 1st down due to penalty.Instinct (or lack thereof) is a funny trait, and it’s one that’s certainly more visible on film than it is on a stat sheet. Amos’s tape is littered with plays like these that could’ve been INTs, but weren’t. His inability to generate takeaways is no-doubt his biggest “flaw”.It’s worth pointing out that this deep coverage issue is pretty much the only major flaw I see in Amos’s game, and I mean that as a compliment. Amos is positionally sound, covers well, attacks downfield, and can tackle both in a pile and the open field. He’s a very, very good player, and a great pick out of the 5th round.The Verdict: Adrian Amos has all the tools that make up a great box safety. He’s actually faster than Jackson/Clinton-Dix when it comes to sheer footspeed, but his utter lack of anticipation tends to make him look slower. He struggles with the nuances of deep coverage, often leaving him vulnerable to deeper sideline throws as well as lobs over the middle. But if you can protect him in coverage Akiem Hicks Jerseys 2019 , he’ll offer all of the run/short pass support you could ask for from a safety.As for who’s better? From a pure player perspective, I think it’s Amos. Jackson proved that a great free safety can cover his weaknesses, but you can’t cover for bad tackling. Every player on the defensive side of the ball is expected to tackle eventually, so I have little doubt that Clinton-Dix’s weakness will hurt the Bears regardless of the talent placed around him. Whether he’ll outright miss tackles or simply give up enough yardage to allow first downs is something I can’t predict because we don’t know his role in the defense yet.That’s the problem with evaluating “Ha Ha versus Amos” right now — we don’t know their defensive roles. Amos’s effectiveness will totally depend on whether he’s asked to play in the box versus playing deep coverage, and Ha Ha should spend as little time in the box as possible. That means between the draft, undrafted players, plus more tryouts expected in rookie mini-camp at the start of May, they’ll need to add at least 24 players over the next few weeks.The roster currently sits at 66 after tight end Zach Miller announced his retirement, due to his serious knee injury that he suffered in the middle of the 2017 season that required a total of 10 surgeries. It’s also worth mentioning that the 2019 schedule release is scheduled for 7pm central time tonight and will be televised on both ESPN and the NFL Network.With all of that in mind, there’s always plenty to talk about when it relates to the Bears, so let’s get to it.The Bears have met with 17 different running backs in some way, shape or form. Of those meetings, there’s only been a handful that I would count as players that won’t be around if they stay at 87.There’s also quiet a few that are projected to go in rounds four through six, so it’s quite possible that general manager Ryan Pace could wait an extra round to grab arguably his “biggest” need.Of the three you mentioned, I think it’s very likely that both David Montgomery and Miles Sanders are gone if the Bears stay at 87. Devin Singletary is going to be interesting because people either love him as a top 80-90 talent or they have him grouped in with about 10 players with fourth and fifth round grades. For me, Singletary has a late third or early fourth, so I expect him to be around. They’ve also met with him on four different occasions including a private visit and workout.My gut still tells me they go running back in the third, but if they hold off until the fourth or fifth round here’s a few guys I like:Trayveon Williams (Texas A&M)Justice Hill (Oklahoma State)Bruce Anderson (North Dakota State)Rodney Anderson (Oklahoma)James Williams (Washington State)I feel like too many people make a big deal about the Bears schedule this year. I’ve seen an argument made that the Bears are playing a “first place schedule” this season Cody Parkey Jerseys 2019 , but fail to realize that only means 2 different teams from the rest of the NFC North.I’m not going to get too deep into this because predicting strength of schedules based on the previous year’s record, rarely equates to much of anything. If you’re looking for a better reason why none of this actually matter, Jonathan Wood’s piece on this exact topic is a must read.As far as the Bears roster turnover, I think when you compare it to other teams across the league, you’ll see that there has been a ton of change. Yes, they lost Bryce Callahan and Adrian Amos among others, but that’s only two starters on a defense loaded with Pro Bowlers and very good talent.An argument can be made that they may have gotten worse in those positions, but I think when you look at their overall additions plus the age of their team, there’s plenty of reason to believe this is still an ascending team. Keep in mind good teams lose talent all of the time, but are able to get by with lesser players or develop draft picks into better replacements. Keep in mind, the Bears defense gave up an average of 10.5 points-per-game over their final four games. That included missing Callahan, Eddie Jackson and even Aaron Lynch for portions of that.Good teams develop talent and most importantly, good teams have quality depth. That was something the Bears had last year and I expect that to continue in 2019, so I would not expect regression from a team that is built to not only win White Taylor Gabriel Jerseys , but continue to get better in their current window.Quarterback Mitchell Trubisky is going into Year 3 in his NFL career, but this will only be his second year in head coach Matt Nagy’s offense. It will also only be his third year of starting since high school. I think that’s important to keep in mind when comparing his progress to that of Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson.Trubisky was well on his way to a 3,600 yard season before his shoulder injury that forced him to miss two games in the second half of the season. When you combine those numbers with the context of him being in first year of a very complex offense, I don’t think it’s overly difficult to see him not only breaking the single-season passing yards mark, but possibly breaking the 4,000 yard marker as well.As long as he stays healthy and builds off his progress from the second half of the season, I see no reason why he can’t land right around that marker. I’ve gone back and re-watched Trubisky in the first three weeks of last year, versus where he ended up and the progression he made was actually pretty remarkable. I’m not sure I’d label it a make or break year for Trubisky, but in order for this team to take the next step, he’s going to play a large part.When looking at the team’s current “needs”, I think that term should be used lightly, at least in the short-term. I’d rank them like this:Running BackKickerDefensive BackOffensive GuardTight EndEdge RusherReceiverObviously running back is a position they will attack and I expect it to be addressed early. I’d also assume they’ll add another kicker, whether that’s a late-round pick or a priority undrafted free agent, we’ll have to wait and see. Defensive back is somewhat broad because cornerback depth is question and the Bears currently have just one safety under contract past this season. When looking at guard Taylor Gabriel Jerseys 2019 , that’s a position that I could see them pushing back another year. They have Rashaad Coward that will be taking work at both tackle and guard, so he could be a future replacement for Kyle Long. But this is a position where I see them maybe kicking the can down the road another year, as well as edge rusher. You can never have enough pass rushers, but the frequency of hitting on edge talent after the third round becomes very scarce. With the amount of future needs they have, it may make more sense to wait on edge and roll with what they have.It seemed like an eternity between years in which the Bears had a Pro Bowler before this past year. Then it seemed like the flood gates opened and Oprah was handing out Pro Bowl invitations in the team’s locker room like candy.This year, I’d like to a few key players to take the next step:Roquan SmithJames DanielsAllen RobinsonThis is a team with a lot of talent and a lot of young talent. Smith was last year’s eighth overall pick and seemed to get better every week. You don’t normally take inside linebackers in the top 10 unless you believe they are game changers. That’s exactly what I expect Smith to form into.With Daniels, I think he finished the year strong, after starting the season on the bench. Harry Hiestand is one of the top offensive line coaches in the league and it appears that Daniels is moving back to his more natural position at center. The combination of the move and him going into his second year, makes him another player that could take a sizable step and become a top center in 2019.Finally, Robinson is someone that signed for big money last offseason, but didn’t really impress in the box score. With that in mind, it was Year 1 of his rehabilitation coming off an ACL tear and usually players are back to normal, if not better in Year 2. He’s also just 25-years-old and flashed a lot of dominant potential down the stretch. It sounds like the Arizona Cardinals won’t be dealing him, though. But I don’t think the 30-year-old corner makes sense for the Eagles. Jenkins would cost nearly $7 million in cap space for the rest of the 2018 season before carrying a $14.75 million figure in 2019. Conley makes much more sense for the Eagles. The 2017 first-round pick is only 23 years old. He’s inexpensive and under contract through at least 2020, prior to his fifth-year option potentially being activated for 2021. Conley has fallen out of favor with the Raiders as he’s been benched for former Eagles corner Daryl Worley. Conley might not be an instant difference-maker for the Eagles, but that’s OK. It doesn’t hurt for Philadelphia to think about the future of the position with Ronald Darby set to be a free agent and Jalen Mills not looking like a reliable long-term answer.For what it’s worth, the Eagles reportedly “loved” Conley heading into the 2017 NFL Draft. They ultimately passed on him at No. 14 overall, though, to select Derek Barnett. It’s entirely possible the sexual assault allegations against Conley scared the Eagles off from selecting him.It’s hard to say what Conley would cost. With the Raiders getting a 2019 first-round pick for Amari Cooper, they could very well have a high asking price. I wouldn’t give up more than a fourth-round pick, which is what 2016 first-round corner Eli Apple was traded for earlier this week.La Canfora also recently mentioned that the Eagles reached out to the Broncos about defensive backs Chris Harris Jr. and Bradley Roby. Acquiring Harris Jr. would cost around $4.8 million in cap space for the rest of this season. He’s then under contract at a reasonable $8.8 cap figure on the last year of his deal in 2019. The 29-year-old Harris is very versatile; he could immediately step in and play in the slot with Sidney Jones missing time. He could also handle playing on the outside.Roby, 26, is on the last year of his rookie deal. He’d be more of a rental unless the team has plans to re-sign him after this season. Though it’s clear the Eagles could use upgrades at corner, I kind of find it hard to believe will make significant changes at that position. Jim Schwartz has staunchly defended Mills despite the fact the third-year player is allowing the most yards in the league this season. I don’t see Darby, who’s had some good outings this season, getting benched either. Maybe the Eagles are really looking for slot help with Jones out, but they did show a lot of trust in Dexter McDougle against the Panthers.Again, the feeling here is that the Eagles’ best play is to try to buy low on a potential long-term player like Conley. The Colts have now won five games in a row following a 1-5 start. What do you attribute most to the turnaround? Chris: The major turning point was definitely the return of starting left tackle Anthony Castonzo. He returned in the Colts game against the Jets, and though that was a loss, the difference in the offense was noticeable.The offensive line with their best lineman back has allowed just 1 sack in that time, and it has made a difference in the passing game, but also helped the run immensely. It is hard to overstate how critical the loss of a very good left tackle can be, but it is certainly something that helps the team when they come back.Apart from Castonzo Cheap Josh Oliver Jersey , there were a slew of other players who were either playing injured or out, who were able to return around Weeks 5-7. Then having a bye week to further recover has really allowed the Colts to enter this stretch of the season remarkably healthy compared with their normal. All those things, plus a defense that continues to grow within DC Matt Eberflus’ system are leading to a better Colts team.2. With Indianapolis now sitting at 6-5 and nipping at the heels of the Baltimore Ravens for the No. 6 seed in the AFC, do you expect to see the Colts in the playoffs come January? Why or why not? Chris: I do. This is a team that hasn’t put up less than 27 points since Week 5, and they have done it against some very good defenses. Not only that, but they can do it by going to a wide variety of playmakers. While Colts teams of the last few years have had to rely heavily on T.Y. Hilton as the only really reliable target to threaten downfield, they now have tight ends in Eric Ebron, Erik Swoope, and Mo Alie-Cox who have to be accounted for as well. When you add in that their running game has more juice than it has in a long time, this is one of the most balanced Colts offenses since Peyton Manning was under center.On defense they give up lots of yards and they have struggled at times. However, they also do relatively well at creating turnovers. With an offense functioning as well as theirs has been that is really what they need the defense to do to have a little run and make the playoffs. Their favorable schedule over the next few weeks certainly helps as well.Once they get into the playoffs? Who knows. But I think they’ll be there by season’s end.3. The last time the Jaguars and Colts played each other, Indy scored 29 points in the first half and led by 13 at halftime. What do you think Indianapolis did well in that game, and what would you like to see improved this time around? There were obvious instances where miscommunication played a role in some big plays, and if Reich can dial up some plays to try to keep the defense on their toes, it would be a big plus.The real focus needs to be in two areas to improve upon. First, the offense needs to remain consistent. They lost focus in the second half, dropping passes and missing on opportunities to extend drives. You should simply never score 29 in one half and none in another. If they can’t be more consistent on offense they’ll likely struggle.The other area that needs to show major improvement is in defending explosive plays. The big play to Donte Moncrief was a killer, and the Colts defensive scheme is designed to prevent those kinds of plays. You can’t let those happen if you’re running a scheme that is designed to give up yards already.Last, they need to be sound tacklers. Far too many plays went for yards after the catch last time, and that is an area this defense needs to improve on greatly.4. One player who carved the Jaguars up in the first meeting was Eric Ebron (three catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns, plus a rushing touchdown). Ebron has scored 12 touchdowns this season and has had a bit of a career renaissance in Indianapolis. As a person who lives in Detroit, I was well aware of his struggles with drops and inconsistencies with the Lions. What has worked for him with the Colts, and how has his presence helped Andrew Luck?Chris: Eric Ebron’s redemption has been a thing of beauty for Colts fans Josh Oliver Jacksonville Jaguars Jerseys , and probably relatively infuriating for Lions fans. I attribute it to a relief from the pressure of being a top pick, but more importantly, to the brilliance of Frank Reich.Ebron has talent, but Reich hasn’t tried to make him a focal point of the offense. He is in on an average of 30-40 percent of the snaps, which both keeps him fresh, and makes the sample size smaller for defenses studying his film. Having watched every one of Ebron’s touchdowns, the remarkable thing is that the scheme from Reich has left multiple players open on those plays.That makes them tough to defend because Luck could go just about anywhere. This schematic brilliance has been evident with regard to tight ends, because the whole tight end room has benefitted from it. Ebron and Luck developed an early chemistry though, and he seems to have a nose for the end zone. Of his 12 total touchdowns, 10 were caught in the red zone. He is exactly the kind of red zone threat this offense had been missing, and Colts fans are thrilled to have him there.5. There have been a lot of changes in Jacksonville this week. The Jaguars have fired their offensive coordinator (Nathaniel Hackett), named Cody Kessler the starter for Sunday and placed Andrew Norwell on IR. Plus Leonard Fournette has been suspended for the game following an altercation in the Buffalo Bills game. All of this likely bodes well for the Colts Jacksonville Jaguars Jerseys Stitched , but if you were the Colts defensive coordinator, would you rather see Blake Bortles or Kessler under center? Why?Chris: I think I prefer seeing Kessler. Bortles had a way of attacking the Colts that let him have pro bowl type numbers against them, for whatever reason. His games against the Colts were always frustrating for Colts fans because he would put up crazy numbers and make throws like he did to Moncrief in the last game.Kessler seems more likely to throw short of the sticks and rely on his teammates to make plays. While this has been relatively effective against the Colts defense at times, it also means fewer explosive plays, which have been daggers for this Colts team in games they have lost.I also think that given the loss of Andrew Norwell and the overall poor health of the offensive line, Eberflus would rather face a less seasoned quarterback and send a bit more pressure to try to throw him off his rhythm. All three of Marrone, Caldwell and Coughlin are under contract through the 2021 season, but if the edict is to win next year... how do you make an offensive coordinator hire for that with all the uncertainty.First of all, the position could potentially be a one-and-done proposition. That’s not an attractive option, especially considering the work that needs to be done on the offensive side of the football. Not only could it be a one-and-done, but you have uncertainty at the quarterback position. The Jaguars may have a plan to sell whoever they hire for the position, but they won’t be able to actually execute that plan until well after they make a hire.
