About the Sheep Meadow

Sheep Meadow is a 15-acre (61,000 m2) meadow in Manhattan, New York City, located near the southwestern corner of Central Park, between West 66th and 69th Streets.

It is bordered on the east by Central Park Mall, the north by The Ramble and Lake, the west by West Drive, and the south by Heckscher Playground and Ballfields. Sheep Meadow was placed into the Greensward Concept, the original plan for Central Park devised in the 1850s, as a parade field. The designers of Central Park, Frederick Law Olmsted, and Calvert Vaux, were opposed to the meadow being used for military purposes, thus it was converted to a sheep pasture.

The sheep were relocated to a neighboring sheepfold, which today houses the Tavern on the Green restaurant, in 1934. Sheep Meadow has a long history of serving as a rallying point for large-scale protests and political movements. Festivals, rallies, concerts, and protests such as the 1960s be-ins have all been examples of this. Despite the fact that sports and meetings were gradually permitted throughout the late nineteenth century, Sheep Meadow suffered substantial damage as a result of misuse. Following a 1980 refurbishment, a law preventing sports was enforced, and the meadow was restored again in 2000.

Sheep Meadow in Manhattan is accessible by public transportation.

Are you looking for directions to Sheep Meadow in Manhattan, New York?
