To get prepped for Sunday’s game, we caught up with David Choate of The Falcoholic to get his thoughts on the inter-conference matchup.Patrick Judis: Your rookie wide receiver (Calvin Ridley) had a coming out party with three touchdowns last week. Was that a matter of the Saints paying too much attention to Julio Jones or is he already become one of the Falcons’ top targets?David Choate: Really, it was a combination of both. Calvin Ridley is an unusually gifted route runner for a rookie receiver, and that combined with some slick moves and excellent speed made him hard to cover for a bunch of decent Saints cornerbacks. But it’s also true that especially early on, the Saints were putting a lot of focus on stopping Julio, and Ridley was able to work against favorable one-on-one matchups. He was still a factor after the Saints started paying more attention to him, though, including a huge pass interference call that came when he was dragged to the two by a pair of defenders on a ball that bounced off his helmet.I was wary about Ridley’s immediate impact heading into the year, but the last two weeks have shown he can be a huge factor for this passing game on a weekly basis. As long as teams have to account for Julio Jones, he should have his opportunities to eat, and his early rapport with Matt Ryan is encouraging.PJ: Two weeks in a row Atlanta has allowed a quarterback to throw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns. Do you think they will be able to stop that trend with Andy Dalton coming to town?DC: If they do, it won’t be by much. Atlanta’s defense is in rough shape right now, with both starting safeties down for the year and star middle linebacker Deion Jones out for several weeks. The Falcons may get their best pass rusher, Takkarist McKinley, back for this one. They are still dealing with a front four that hasn’t applied much pressure, at least one shaky safety option Bobby Hart Jersey , a diminished group of linebackers and cornerbacks who are great on paper but have had some missed tackles and coverage miscues early on. This should still be a decent defense, but it’s not a great one, and if Cincinnati is smart enough to attack mismatches with Giovani Bernard and their tight ends against safety Jordan Richards and middle linebacker Duke Riley, they should have no trouble piling up the passing yards. PJ: Who is an underrated player on either side of the ball that you think isn’t getting enough national attention?DC: On offense, it’s Ito Smith. The rookie has been insanely impressive over the last two weeks for a fourth round running back who did absolutely nothing in preseason and during the first week. He’s shown excellent hands, shiftiness and speed, parlaying those into consistent yardage against the Panthers and Saints. He has to be accounted for, and teams that underestimate him might find him rumbling through the middle of the defense.On defense, it’s Damontae Kazee. He’ll be filling in for free safety Ricardo Allen, who went on injured reserve this week, and offers the kind of physicality and playmaking ability at the position that the Falcons are lucky to have in the face of the injuries they’re dealing with. I’m very worried about Richards next to him, but Kazee is a good player who should only get better with more playing time. He just needs to be careful about how he tackles. PJ: Could you please introduce Bengals fans to the players who will be going against the right side of the offensive line, so they know who will be in Dalton’s face all game.DC: On the right side, you’ll be facing off against Vic Beasley and Grady Jarrett quite a bit. Beasley has been beyond disappointing thus far in 2018, with one sack and very few pressures in three games. He’s always been quick, but his development has stagnated and we keep waiting for him to improve and become the fearsome edge presence the team figured they were drafting in the top ten. Maybe this is the week he gets it going, but I’m wary about that.Jarrett’s much more of a threat. He’s leading the team in pressures and is a terrific run defender, and he often winds up in the backfield. I’d be worried he’ll be taking Dalton’s lunch a couple of times this game. PJ: What is your prediction for the game?DC: At the risk of sounding like a homer Alex Redmond Jersey , the Falcons should win this. Their defense scraped bottom at week ago, but they’re getting their top pass rusher McKinley back by the sounds of it, and the offense is terrific. At home, where they’ll be capable of hanging 30+ points on the Bengals, I think they pull off something nail-bitingly close like 31-27. Despite an aggressive revamping of the offensive line last offseason, the unit’s struggles persisted for the Bengals, specifically with the interior. Last season it was a mix of rookie center Billy Price getting his feet under him and Alex Redmond being far too inconsistent to warrant being a starter. Of course Clint Boling remind the bright spot at left guard, but it still shouldn’t be shocking to see some competition brought in at center and right guard.Competition at center does not equate to the potential benching of Price though, but would open the possibility to moving him over to right guard, which is a position he also played a considerable amount at Ohio State. The Bengals have nice options with Trey Hopkins and Christian Westerman on the roster already, but with Zac Taylor taking over, we shouldn’t expect him and his staff to automatically bank on players from the previous regime alone.Pro Football Focus recently released their top 10 interior lineman set to be free agents. Although it is really a top nine since the Colts guard, Mark Glowinski, recently signed an extension to stay with the Indianapolis Colts. While it’s easy to say Cincinnati should go out and sign a few of the top five names, that really isn’t how the Bengals build their teams, in case you’ve forgotten. These will be players who could be in the Bengals’ self-imposed budget while also providing valuable depth or starting ability. Here are some guys they should look at and how likely it’d be the Bengals would land them.Most likely to signRodger Saffold, guard, Rams: Saffold is second on PFF’s list Bobby Hart Jersey , but there is solid reasoning as to why the Bengals represent a logical match. The most obvious connection is Taylor having coached the Rams the past two seasons. This would be valuable for Taylor in his attempt to establish the kind of locker room that he is hoping to bring over from Los Angeles. It is always imperative to have veteran players bridge the gap. Saffold will also be 31 when the season starts, which means some of the higher spenders may stray away from adding him as any long term deal could backfire on them.Playing next to Andrew Whitworth at left guard, Saffold played a key role in the Rams’ offensive line being so successful last season, and he ranked as the ninth best guard in the NFL, according to PFF. Saffold would likely make the move to right guard, but that shouldn’t be too much of a problem for the veteran.John Miller, guard, Bills: Miller is one of those low risk type free agents. He doesn’t have an amazing track record recently, but he is only 25 years old. So, he still just hitting the prime of his career. PFF also only charged him with one sack in 529 pass attempts this past season, which is a major upgrade over Redmond’s performance. Miller has the floor of being a valuable backup with the possibility of finally turning into a starter in a new location. A.J. Cann, guard, Jaguars: Cann started off his career looking like he would turn into a pretty good starting guard, but he has fallen off the past two seasons. He will also turn 28 in October. He is another low risk player who isn’t likely to get a blockbuster deal in free agency. Cincinnati took a chance on a former Jaguar who wasn’t quite reaching expectations before when they acquire safety Reggie Nelson, so it is possible they try to repeat history and revive Cann’s career.An outside shotMatt Paradis, center, Broncos: Paradis is PFF’s top ranked interior offensive lineman free agent, but the reason Cincinnati has a little bit of a chance could very well be business related. Paradis will be turning 30 in October Deshaun Davis Cincinnati Bengals Jersey , which means he likely realizes he has one big contract left in his career, and especially after playing on a sixth rounder’s contract the past few years, he will likely look for his payday. The only way Cincinnati has a shot is if teams are’t willing to give him the big deal he deserves. He is coming off a broken fibula in Week 9, which could scare some potential suitors away. The Bengals should attempt to swoop in with a one-year deal similar to what they’ve attempted to do with veteran linebackers over the years.Paradis is easily one of the best centers in the NFL, and he could ultimately start right away while moving Price over to guard. Paradis would also be a great teacher for Price during that season, so if he were to leave in free agency the following season, at least Price would hopefully be more prepared to take back over. So many things have to go right for this to end up happening, but it isn’t out of the realm of possibilities. Ramon Foster, guard, Steelers: This isn’t as much of a long shot, but it really depends on Foster’s market in free agency. At the age of 33, his quality of play has gotten better over time, and he’s been a consistent component to one of the most dominating offensive lines over the past few years with the Steelers. Even if is on a short term deal, he could be a great veteran to bring in and help turnaround the Bengals struggling offensive line. Late in the fourth quarter, the Lions suffered a few key injuries that just so happen to hit the Lions where they are the most vulnerable.The first was to Marvin Jones Jr., who limped off after a fourth quarter catch. The team announced he had a knee injury and was questionable to return. Not only did Jones not return, but he was downgraded to OUT for the Lions’ final offensive drive of the game. To make matters worse, Kenny Golladay was clearly hobbled towards the end of the game. Golladay managed to finish out the final quarter, but don’t be surprised to see him pop up on the injury report next week.Sticking with the offense, Michael Roberts suffered a shoulder injury during a fourth-down reception. The Lions were already short-handed at tight end, as Luke Willson missed the game with a shoulder injury. That left just Levine Toilolo as the Lions’ sole healthy tight end for the final portion of the game. Lastly White Austin Bryant Jersey , Kerryon Johnson had to leave the game temporarily, as it appeared he reaggravated his ankle injury. They also haven’t really stopped anyone from running the ball in recent weeks.Favorable matchupsJoe Mixon (Bengals RB): Mixon was held back by the situation this offense is stuck in last week. The Browns shut him down by loading the box by knowing if they blitzed it would stop the run and pressure Jeff Driskel. The Steelers could easily replicate that same plan. Still, Mixon has had some good games against Pittsburgh, and he should have plenty of chances as the Bengals lone offensive weapon.Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster (Steelers WR): You need to check Brown’s status before the game, as he has been questionable with a knee injury. It is hard to imagine him sitting out in such a crucial game though. Both of these guys have been pretty impossible to guard all year. Both had a huge game in Week 6 when Smith-Schuster had seven catches for 111 yards and Brown five catches for 105 yards and a touchdown. It shouldn’t be hard for them to put up similar numbers this week again.Steelers defense: The Bengals looked lost for all but about eight minutes last week. The Steelers should have a far easier time getting to Driskel against the Bengals offensive line that doesn’t look like it really knows how to protect their quarterback Youth Deshaun Davis Jersey , which should lead to some turnovers.Good but not greatVance McDonald (Steelers TE): McDonald had seven catches for 68 yards, which was one of his best games of the year. He tore his ACL last November in just his fifth game of the season, and it seemed reasonable to expect another few months of rehab before he would be ready to resume full football activities.However, Bulaga has blown those expectations out of the water. On Friday, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said in his pre-practice press conference that Bulaga had passed his physical, which means that he is no longer on the PUP list. Furthermore, McCarthy said that Bulaga will practice on Friday on a limited basis. This leaves outside linebacker Nick Perry as the only Packer remaining on PUP.This is great news for an offensive line that is already working on finding a new starter at the right guard position to replace free agent Jahri Evans. Had Bulaga started the regular season on the PUP list, he would have missed a minimum of six games, making him eligible to return for the Packers’ week 8 game against the Rams. Instead, it appears that he will be ready to go in week one barring any setbacks, giving the team a big upgrade over potential replacements Jason Spriggs or Kyle Murphy.The ACL tear suffered last year was Bulaga’s second, as he also tore that ligament in his other knee during the team’s Family Night Scrimmage in 2013. That offseason, Bulaga had switched from right to left tackle but the injury forced David Bakhtiari into the starting lineup — where he has remained ever since. Furthermore, that injury helped convince the Packers to convert Family Night from a true scrimmage into a glorified practice to reduce the chances of player injuries.For now Elgton Jenkins Jersey 2019 , however, the Packers’ line appears to be taking shape for week one, and it will be markedly better if Bulaga is indeed able to start on the right side. A revamped secondary did an excellent job against Matt Ryan’s high-powered offense with myriad weapons, and Joe Philbin’s team got the first truly complete win of the year. But, as the saying goes, even a dead cat will bounce if you drop it from high enough. Gruesome metaphors aside, it’s not uncommon for teams to come back and win after firing a coach. Rodgers said the team bought into Philbin’s message immediately, a potential indictment of Mike McCarthy but also an indication of the ferocity with which this team craved a new voice. Philbin made sure Aaron Jones got his touches after a slow start, as Jones put up 106 yards and a touchdown on 20 touches. The passing game found its rhythm with more short passes and underneath looks and Philbin prioritized personnel multiplicity Color Rush Elgton Jenkins Jersey , constantly changing formation and player groupings. Rodgers regained some of his lost accuracy and the offensive line got its act together in the second half despite all the injuries. If there’s reason to believe Sunday’s model could be sustainable though, it’s on defense, where a short-handed secondary held the Falcons under 150 yards until deep into the third quarter. Jaire Alexander’s day would have looked much better had the officials correctly ruled the first two Julio Jones catches, but he made up for it with impact plays as a tackler and blitzer. Clay Matthews had his best day as a Packer in a long time and Bashaud Breeland looks like a player Green Bay should try to keep this offseason. Holding the Falcons to seven points during meaningful run of play didn’t have anything to do with Mike McCarthy not being the head coach. Atlanta self-destructed with some penalties, but part of that was because they struggled to block the Packers front. The defense playing like this truly does suggest a pathway forward for this team to make significant improvement, whether this year or beyond. What happened Sunday validates Mark Murphy and Brian Gutekunst. This is the team Green Bay should have been from and we saw hints of it in Week 1 when Rodgers was actually on the field. In light of what the Bears defense did to Jared Goff and the Rams Sunday night, the Rodgers comeback looks even more miraculous in hindsight. More to the point, there was nothing truly flukey about what the Packers did to the Falcons. There were no trick plays or ultra-lucky breaks. The Atlanta fumble in the red zone was lucky, but it was late in the third quarter with Green Bay still up 20. The schematic tweaks Philbin made worked and, more importantly, the team bought into them. Success begets success when it comes to confidence in a scheme Cheap Elgton Jenkins Jersey , meaning this team should feel even better about the plan heading into a tough matchup with the Bears on Sunday.The last time the Packers faced the Bears, Aaron Rodgers went full Avengers and ripped Chicago’s heart out at Lambeau Field. Under the departed Mike McCarthy, Green Bay had won eight straight at Soldier Field. Even with Brett Hundley, the Packers found enough plays to win against Vic Fangio’s defense. But this version of the Bears defense has grown since Week 1. They’re on a record pace for turnovers and interceptions. They create pressure from every angle, disguise coverages extremely well, and create big plays as well as any defense since that Broncos Super Bowl team. It won’t take long to find out if the Packers offense found something sustainable. They play the best defense in football in six days. If the Packers really are closer to the team we saw Sunday, we’ll find out this weekend. Mike Pettine’s defense should once again be able to find ways to fluster Mitch Trubisky and should be much better prepared for his ability to make plays with his feet. That would have been true no matter who was the head coach and Pettine has shown the ability to game plan for these big games. The true test will come for Rodgers and the offense. No doubt Fangio will be ready with some wrinkles after stymieing the Packers in the first half of that Week 1 game even before Rodgers got hurt. Bryan Bulaga and Lane Taylor need to get back on the field to give Green Bay any chance, but even then Chicago’s ferocious defense will test any progress that has allegedly been made.Beating a talented team like Atlanta, in particular shutting down that offense for most of the game, isn’t nothing.
