Distance vs. Torque
Typically the procedure for tightening a compression fitting is specified using the rotation of the nut as the key metric, rather than torque. Compression nuts are threaded, meaning that the number of rotations of the nut is directly correlated to the linear compression of the ferrule, based on the thread’s pitch. Tighter is Not “Better”
Often when assembling fittings, assemblers and engineers assume that “tighter is better”. This does not hold true for compression fittings. As described in the “Ferrules” section above, the optimal seal is created by a line contact between the ferrule and the tubing. Insufficient tightening of the compression nut will not deform the ferrule enough to create this contact, but over-tightening will deform the ferrule too much, creating a surface contact. A surface contact weakens the seal and often results in leaks

Disassembly and Re-Assembly
The ease of assembly and disassembly is one of the reasons why compression fittings are so widely used. Disassembly involves simply loosening the compression nut or screw. Re-assembly can be accomplished in a similar manner to the initial assembly, although typically fewer turns of the nut are required, since the ferrule is already swaged to the tubing. It is important to note however, that compression fittings can only be disassembled and reassembled a few times before either the ferrules and/or the fitting body should be replaced, to ensure a leak-tight seal.

Mixing and Matching Components
Even if components from two different manufacturers look similar externally, they will often differ in key internal dimensions, such as ferrule/body taper, ferrule length, and thread size and pitch. Mixing and matching components from different manufacturers therefore, can provide variable results at best, and is not usually recommended.

While these two valve types essentially perform the same function, their structure is considerably functiondifferent from one another.

Gate valves are designed to have a flat gate closure. This closure slides in and out, or moves up and down, in order to open or shut the valve. These valves only have on and off settings. Hence, they can’t be used for flow regulation, but only for restricting it.

Ball valves seal considerably tighter as they have a 100% shut off mechanism. On the other hand, gate valves are prone to leaks. It is because the design includes many more channels which can potentially leak. This gives the fluid running in the line more avenues to leak out from.

Considering that valves are not particularly expensive, there is not much difference between prices of the two valves—or other valves for that matter.

A double union ball valve has, as implied, two unions on it – one on either side. The unions enable the valve to be unscrewed and removed from the pipeline, where it can be serviced or checked to see whether it's blocked, and then easily put back in the pipeline where the unions can get screwed back on. This means that to get to your valve and service it, you won’t have to worry about cutting your pipe. It also means that returning your valve to your pipe system is a fast process and won’t keep your system down for long.

The main advantage of a double union ball valve is that it has a full-bore flow all the way through. This means there is nothing to catch any debris that might be coming down in the water or fluid. Therefore, it is highly unlikely to get blocked.

An alternative to a double union ball valve, which still has the same benefits of a full-bore flow, is a single union ball valve. However, a single union ball valve only has a union on one side of it. Due to this, a single union ball valve should be used at the end of a pipeline rather than in the middle of a system. If it was used in the middle of a pipe system and you had a problem with the valve, the only way to remove it would be to cut the pipe on one side and then unscrew the union. You would then be left with having to glue a fitting onto pipe. This means your system would be down for a lot longer. That's why we use double union ball valves in a system, and single union ball valves at the end of a system.

While ball valves have their advantages, they are not easy to control. There is only a quarter turn on the valve between fully open and fully closed, which means it is very hard to get a fine control of flow. They're great if you want a fully open flow, a fully closed flow, or perhaps somewhere around a half-flow. But if you want finer control than that, you are much better using a gate valve, which has around eight turns between fully open and fully closed. Gate valves enable you to get fine control on the valve and fine control of the flow.

They are also all wet tested at the factory before they come to us, so if you find a tiny bit of water or fluid in and around the valve when you take the unions off, that doesn't mean it's been used on someone else's system, it means it's been wet tested at the factory and is therefore in perfect working condition!

Full Port Ball Valve
Full port or full bore ball valve is more expensive than other types. The oversized ball in the full port ball valve lowers the friction loss because the hole in this ball valve is the same size as the pipeline. Though the valve is larger, the flow is unrestricted in full port ball valve size.

Full bore ball valves are usually used for throttling applications in various systems with high flow coefficients and low pressure drops.

Standard Port Ball Valve
Compared to the full port, the standard port ball valve has a smaller port and ball. It’s less expensive but comes with a slightly restricted flow due to the pipe size. Though they are cheaper, they have higher pressure drops compared to other ball valve types. Standard port valves are great for systems with high flow coefficient, just lie full port valves.

V-Port Ball Valve
The V in the v-port ball valve represents either the shape of the seat or the shape of the ball. V ball valve enables you to control the opening and the closing better. The flow characteristic in this type is close to linear. The high velocities of the fluids used with such ball valves forced the designers to come up with generally more robust construction for them since these types of fluids quickly damage a standard valve.

Multi-port ball valves have three or four ways with an L to T shaped hole in the middle. T valves can connect any pair of ports and the L valve can connect the center port to side ports. Globe Valves
Globe valves are named for their spherical bodies. They have two halves separated by an internal baffle, or wall, causing different flow path than ball valves and other rotary-type valves. These valves actuate in a linear movement.

Oil and gas producers control globe valves by using pneumatic or electric power to actuate them based on a signal received from a pilot. Depending on the type, globe valves can provide either on/off or modulating service.

A V port ball valve has either a 'v' shaped ball or a 'v' shaped seat. This allows for linear and even equal percentage flow characteristics. When the valve is in the closed position and opening is commenced the small end of the 'v' is opened first allowing stable flow control during this stage.

Three- and four-way have an L- or T-shaped hole through the middle. The different combinations of flow are shown in the figure. It is easy to see that a T valve can connect any pair of ports, or all three, together, but the 45 degree position which might disconnect all three leaves no margin for error. The L valve can connect the center port to either side port, or disconnect all three, but it cannot connect the side ports together.

Multi-port ball valves with 4 ways, or more, are also commercially available, the inlet way often being orthogonal to the plane of the outlets. For special applications, such as driving air-powered motors from forward to reverse, the operation is performed by rotating a single lever four-way valve. The 4-way ball valve has two L-shaped ports in the ball that do not interconnect, sometimes referred to as an "×" port.
