He returned in the Colts game against the Jets, and though that was a loss, the difference in the offense was noticeable.The offensive line with their best lineman back has allowed just 1 sack in that time, and it has made a difference in the passing game, but also helped the run immensely. Not only that, but they can do it by going to a wide variety of playmakers. While Colts teams of the last few years have had to rely heavily on T.Y. Hilton as the only really reliable target to threaten downfield, they now have tight ends in Eric Ebron, Erik Swoope, and Mo Alie-Cox who have to be accounted for as well. When you add in that their running game has more juice than it has in a long time, this is one of the most balanced Colts offenses since Peyton Manning was under center.On defense they give up lots of yards and they have struggled at times. However, they also do relatively well at creating turnovers. With an offense functioning as well as theirs has been that is really what they need the defense to do to have a little run and make the playoffs. Their favorable schedule over the next few weeks certainly helps as well.Once they get into the playoffs? Who knows. But I think they’ll be there by season’s end.3. The last time the Jaguars and Colts played each other, Indy scored 29 points in the first half and led by 13 at halftime. You should simply never score 29 in one half and none in another. If they can’t be more consistent on offense they’ll likely struggle.The other area that needs to show major improvement is in defending explosive plays. The big play to Donte Moncrief was a killer, and the Colts defensive scheme is designed to prevent those kinds of plays. You can’t let those happen if you’re running a scheme that is designed to give up yards already.Last, they need to be sound tacklers. Far too many plays went for yards after the catch last time, and that is an area this defense needs to improve on greatly.4. One player who carved the Jaguars up in the first meeting was Eric Ebron (three catches for 69 yards and two touchdowns, plus a rushing touchdown). Ebron has scored 12 touchdowns this season and has had a bit of a career renaissance in Indianapolis. He is exactly the kind of red zone threat this offense had been missing, and Colts fans are thrilled to have him there.5. There have been a lot of changes in Jacksonville this week. The Jaguars have fired their offensive coordinator (Nathaniel Hackett), named Cody Kessler the starter for Sunday and placed Andrew Norwell on IR. Plus Leonard Fournette has been suspended for the game following an altercation in the Buffalo Bills game. Why?Chris: I think I prefer seeing Kessler. Bortles had a way of attacking the Colts that let him have pro bowl type numbers against them, for whatever reason. His games against the Colts were always frustrating for Colts fans because he would put up crazy numbers and make throws like he did to Moncrief in the last game.Kessler seems more likely to throw short of the sticks and rely on his teammates to make plays. While this has been relatively effective against the Colts defense at times, it also means fewer explosive plays, which have been daggers for this Colts team in games they have lost.I also think that given the loss of Andrew Norwell and the overall poor health of the offensive line, Eberflus would rather face a less seasoned quarterback and send a bit more pressure to try to throw him off his rhythm. Will it be a top tier veteran like Nick Foles? Joe Flacco? Tyrod Taylor? Will it be a first round pick? The Bears start to the game was unequivocally worse than my viewing experience. This left them with a great opportunity to make a comeback. They pulled it off in an ugly, unsatisfying, but ultimately winsome manner.Full box score can be seen here.So much for the first drive scoring streakThe first offensive drive was looking pretty good with some big runs by Cohen and Howard and some efficient passes by Trubisky. It all imploded on 3rd and 6, when the Cardinals went all in blitzing from both edges and were rewarded handsomely. There was no visible hot read on the broadcast tape, and Biscuit made the suboptimal decision to run backwards. The result was a 17 yard sack placing the Bears into difficult field goal territory Cody Parkey failed to convert.The second drive was worse. After moving the ball effectively off a 10 yard starting point, a barely-forced fumble gifted the ball back to the cardinals for an easy TD. That drive finished with Seal-Jones beating Trevathan on a corner route, with some confusion added in by a receiver crossing ahead of him. Bisky InconsistencyTrubisky has been inconsistent for the first three games this season, and it certainly gets frustrating to watch the rushed and off-target throws. The encouraging part is that he always comes back with some good plays and good throws. He gets flustered, but he doesn’t stay flustered. That’s one of the more important traits in a quarterback, but on its own, its certainly not enough. What I want to see is a game that starts out poorly, and then he comes back to finish strong and win. Instead, I am seeing a microcosm where he starts a drive poorly, then finishes well. He makes a bad play, then follows it with a few good plays, then a bad one. It’s fair to say Trubisky has played poorly these first three games. On average, I think he’s played worse than he did last season. But he manages to show something positive every game. I believe as he gets more experience and more comfortable with the playbook, the ratio of good to bad will continue to improve. Whatever you believe, all we can do as fans is wait and hope.O line problemsThe Cardinals managed to get a lot of pressure, and not just on blitzes. Charles Leno, Jr., understandably, had more trouble with Chandler Jones than he’s had with any edge so far. Even when the O line didn’t get beat, they were pushed back more often than usual, especially in the passing game.In addition to the O line troubles Youth Ha Ha Clinton-Dix Jerseys , there were a lot of unblocked blitzes. The Cardinals game plan seemed to be a lot more aggressive than it was in their first two weeks, and the Bears, and Trubisky in particular, were not prepared for it.D line solutionsLet’s not get technical. I’m counting Mack in the D-line. The Bears front continues to impress me every game, with at least a few plays exhibiting complete domination. Sometimes Hicks and Mack meet at the quarterback, sometimes it’s Mack and Roy Robertson-Harris. Sometimes they do it two plays in a row. Sometimes Aaron Lynch gets pressure while Mack distracts. And at least once a game, Mack forces a turnover. And then Bilal Nichols comes in with a crucial tackle for loss forcing the 4th and 5 which led to Bryce Callahan’s game-winning interception.Floyd has been quiet in terms of pressure these first few games, but he’s been playing well in coverage and the run game.Roquan showing his presenceThe Bears’ first-round linebacker hasn’t flashed any amazing plays yet, but Roquan Smith had several good run stops including a great pounce into the backfield in this game. He also had a delightful tackle of David Johnson, gratuitously tossing him backwards on a play that was voided by a penalty. Get well soon, Prince AmukamaraAmukamara was stingy in coverage and had an impressive pass breakup before leaving the game with a hamstring booboo. Kevin Tolliver came in when Prince left, and showed his inexperience quickly, getting beat on a double move for a big gain. I’m happy to have Tolliver on the roster, and think he has exciting potential, but I’m not happy to see him on the field during crucial moments in his rookie season.This game had plenty of frustrating moments for Bears fans, but ultimately, the team continued playing hard throughout a surprisingly difficult road game.The Bears are now 2 and 1, meaning they have a winning record for the first time since 2014 and the best record in the NFC North. The highly-anticipated match-up against that other LA team has come and gone and, for the most part, I feel about as lousy as I expected to.The Chargers fell to Sean McVay and the Rams in the Coliseum in front of a wild, rowdy crowd that put the pedal to the metal from the get-go on their disdain for the Bolts.Hell, before the game, two planes were seen flying messages over the stadium, supposedly paid for by a combination of ex-Chargers fans, Rams, and Raiders fans.The pettiness knows no bounds.Who knows if all the badgering, smack-talking, and pettiness really got into the heads of the Chargers, but their play on the field did them no favors in trying to prove a point to the skeptical LA fan base that they are also worthy of their dollars and attention.The final score to this game was actuallt pretty misleading in a myriad of ways.For one, looking at how well the Rams moved the ball all game, their final point total could have been much higher.On the flip-side, the Chargers could have put up just as many points had it not been for their inability to move the ball following a turnover by their defense.The Chargers and Rams both recorded two turnovers, apiece. The Chargers turned their takeaways into two three-and-outs, the second of the two leading to the blocked punt by the Rams for a touchdown.The Rams on the other hand? They turned their first takeaway, a rare Keenan Allen fumble Cheap Cortez Broughton Jersey , into a 53-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Cooper Kupp. To add some insult to injury, cornerback Trevor Williams was beat badly on the play and, when he had the chance to bring Kupp down, he failed and ultimately looked as if he gave up while he still had a chance to corral the receiver.At the end of the day, there’s always going to be the would’ve, could’ve, should’ve.“They beat themselves.”“They couldn’t stop shooting themselves in the foot.”It’s going to be a week filled with these statements. Dare I say, a SHOT-CALLER?The rookie-sensation continues his relentless pursuit of being the best player on the team following another sensational performance against one of the top offenses in the NFL.While his ability as a pas-rusher has been on full-display during the team’s first two games of the season, James reminded everyone that he is still a defensive back as he plucked a Jared Goff pass out of the air for his first career interception.So after just three career games, the Florida State product still leads the team with a pair of sacks and is now tied for the team lead in interceptions as fellow safety Adrian Phillips, linebacker Kyzir White, and James all have one interception to their names.WR Mike WilliamsYeah it took a little while but the Mike Williams breakout game finally happened and the only thing that could have made it better is if the Chargers were able to walk away with the victory.The best part about this is that Williams’ first touchdown came against CB Marcus Peters, a known arch-nemesis of Philip Rivers who has four interceptions against the QB in their previous three match-ups.In the middle of the first, with the Chargers looking to respond to a Rams score, Rivers tossed a rainbow to Williams in the back of the end zone as the wideout had a step on #22. With a full-extension White Cortez Broughton Jersey , Williams was able to haul it in, holding on through the contact with the ground. At first, Williams was slow to get up, looking as if he simply landed on the ball and had the air knocked out of him. Luckily for Rivers and company, he soon returned to do more damage.In the third quarter, in response to the earlier mentioned Kupp touchdown, the Chargers marched down the field and Rivers found Williams once again on a modified corner route. Although Williams caught the ball a few yards short of paydirt, he showed off the strength that made him the seventh-overall pick in last year’s draft by giving a defender a ride into the endzone for his second touchdown of the game.Mike-Will finished the game with four catches for 81 yards and the pair of touchdowns, all team-highs with the yards and touchdowns also being the highest of his young career.StaticDEs Isaac Rochell & Melvin IngramI wasn’t a fan of the team’s decision to leave Rochell in charge of Bosa’s role on the defense during his absence. Rochell was the team’s seventh round draft pick in 2017 and, at the time, was deemed the lesser of the two Notre Dame defensive linemen that I wanted the team to draft.After resembling more of a run-stopper instead of someone who could get after the quarterback, Rochell underwent a lifestyle change over the offseason, turning to a plant-based diet in order to re-shape his body with the goal of becoming a better athlete.So far this young season, the effort has yet to pay off as he remains sack-less through the first three weeks.Ingram, on the other hand, has 1.5 sacks to his name but his overall performance up to this point has been slightly forgettable.His sacks came against the Bills in a blowout victory so those are simply what they are. In the other two contests against the Chiefs and Rams, the actual good teams the Chargers have played, he recorded just a single tackle in each.It’s unfortunately far too obvious how much Ingram has relied on Bosa’s influence for his own productivity. As much as Ingram likes to gloat about being able to play any position on the football field, he hasn’t even shown the propensity to play his actual position to the best of his ability.Rochell hasn’t offered much at all and only makes matters worse when he gets rag-dolled by the Rams’ Andrew Whitworth Youth Mike Pouncey Jerseys , the oldest left tackle in the NFL.My hope going forward is that the team decides to give Uchenna Nwosu some more run at the “big” end position to see if he can create a spark where this defense has been lacking.CBs Trevor Williams & Casey HaywardNow I hoped that i’d never have a reason to include these players in this section but, here we are.After the recent tilt with the Rams, Williams currently sits as Pro Football Focus’ 52nd-ranked cornerback in the NFL. Not good.“But I’m sure Hayward is still doing pretty decent for himself, right?”Wrong. Hayward comes in as PFF’s 73rd-ranked cornerback in all of football, just a year removed from being their #1 during the 2017 season.For what it’s worth, I do not think this is a trend that will continue. Williams and Hayward didn’t just forget how to cover over the offseason. Let’s take into account who they have played against and understand that both Andy Reid and Sean McVay are masterminds when it comes to play-calling and schematically erasing an opposing team’s difference-makers.Give them some time. Their next game against the 49ers should be a nice bounce-back game for their confidence, as long as they take care of business from the start.Derwin James Claims an 80 Player Rating in Madden 19 In a recent article from CBSsports.com, around 20 player ratings for top rookies were released for the upcoming edition of the Madden video games. The ratings for the top-5 quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers were announced before they listed the top-5 grades overall for all defensive players. They were as follows:LB Roquan Smith - 81CB Denzel Ward - 80DE Bradley Chubb - 80S Derwin James - 80DT Vita Vea - 79Some casual fans may find it interesting that James sits at the same rating as Chubb and Ward, both of whom were top-5 overall selection in this year’s draft. The more hardcore film-junkies would argue that James was a top-10 talent in the entire draft so this announcement is more on par with their expectations.The Chargers look to be one of the more talented teams in this year’s version of Madden once again, without having many players reach into the 90+ rating tier. By the end of the 2017 season, the Chargers finished with one, maybe two, players in the 90’s depending on which roster update you were at. He’ll benefit from having Jason Peters (instead of Halapoulivaati Vaitai) back at left tackle and Nelson Agholor in the slot. He’ll also benefit from Doug Pederson’s excellent scheming and play-calling. There’s also some reason to be concerned. With the Eagles missing two out of their top four wide receivers (Alshon Jeffery and Mack Hollins), it remains to be seen how Foles will be able to connect with his remaining wideouts. The hope is that they’ll find a way to be on the same page.It’s not hard to predict that Foles WILL be on the same page with his tight ends, especially when it comes to Zach Ertz. Those two have a solid connection dating back to Foles’ first stint with Philadelphia back in 2013. Rookie tight end Dallas Goedert could also be a red zone boost for an Eagles team that only managed to score one touchdown against in the Divisional Round earlier this year.Speaking of that game, I can’t help but feel like the Falcons are going to be very hungry tonight. They have every reason to “want it more” given the nature of their frustrating loss.But I’m not about to join those who are already writing this game off as a loss. Bilal Nichols stright bull rushes Benenoch back into Jameis Winston, while RRH slow plays left tackle Donovan Smith and gives a quick swim move to get inside leverage. If it wasn’t for RRH losing his balance, Winston might have not gotten up from the hit that was coming. But this was a great effort all around and both players deserve the credit for this sack. Sack 4 - Third quarter 0:16 (1st & 10) - Aaron LynchThis is a great effort from the front-4 here. Lynch, who ends up with the sack, never gives up and ends up with the reward, but he isn’t the only one with a great effort on this play. His outside rip move beats Dotson, but Winston steps up and he has to work back around.
