He also became the first player in NFL history to throw for 400+ yards in three consecutive games. The Bucs lost but their late comeback attempt showed they’re still dangerous. 8 - Atlanta Falcons (LW: 9) - The Falcons lost but they came close to winning. They’ve bounced back since a poor Week 1 offensive performance in Philly. Unfortunately for Atlanta, they’re getting hit hard with key injuries. 9 - Carolina Panthers (LW: 12) - Quality win for the Panthers to beat a solid Cincy team.10 - Green Bay Packers (LW: 3) - Aaron Rodgers’ injury limitations were on display against Washington. Green Bay is vulnerable when he’s not able to carry the team. 11 - Washington Redskins (LW: 23) - Wrote this about Washington prior to their win on Sunday: “I think it’d be very Washington of Washington to win this game after somewhat inexplicably losing at home to the Colts but I’m not going to just count on that.” Well, I should have counted on it. High variance team early on this season. Hard to rank.12 - New England Patriots (LW: 8) - It’s probably too early to say for sure that the Eagles ended the Patriots dynasty, but yes, that’s exactly what’s happening here. 13 - Chicago Bears (LW: 15) - I go back to what I said last week: I’m buying Chicago’s defense but I’m selling Mitchell Trubisky. He hasn’t been good. 14 - Pittsburgh Steelers (LW: 18) - Finding themselves in a must-win spot, the Steelers got the job done against a hot Tampa team. Pittsburgh is still last in the AFC North for now. 15 - Minnesota Vikings (LW: 4) - The Vikings entered Sunday’s game as 17-point home favorites and managed to lose to Buffalo by a final score of 27 to 6. What an embarrassment. You Vike That? 16 - Cincinnati Bengals (LW: 11) - Andy Dalton threw four interceptions on Sunday. Not gonna win when that happens. 17 - Baltimore Ravens (LW: 17) - I have nothing interesting to say about the Ravens. They seem boringly solid. 18 - Los Angeles Chargers (LW: 13) - If it’s not Bill O’Brien, it could be Anthony Lynn who ends up being the first head coach fired this season. 19 - Denver Broncos (LW: 15) - The Broncos followed up two close wins with a decisive road loss. Case Keenum didn’t look good, which is shocking. (It’s not shocking.)20 - Tennessee Titans (LW: 24) - I don’t think the Titans are actually good but I do think they’re not terrible. They’re 2-1 and their one loss was by one possession to an undefeated Miami team. With that said, the aesthetics haven’t been pleasing and there are still some issues here. 21 - Cleveland Browns (LW: 25) - It was a small sample, sure, but No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield looks legit. I think the Browns will win a couple more games this season.22 - Seattle Seahawks (LW: 26) - Turns out that the Seahawks are still tough to beat at home. Also Earl Thomas is still really good. 23 - Indianapolis Colts (LW: 22) - Andrew Luck’s lack of arm strength seems to be a real issue. The 29-year-old is averaging a mere 5.34 yards per attempt. The Colts had to bring in Jacoby Brissett just to attempt a Hail Mary in Philly. 24 - San Francisco 49ers (LW: 14) - The Niners are 1-2 and now Jimmy Garoppolo is done for the season. Well, there is that one purposefully out of left field pick made that won’t happen, but by and large everyone has the Jaguars picking a right tackle. The closer we get to the draft however, and the more the consensus is a right tackle the less I think that’s what the Jaguars will do with their pick.I mentioned it before to not sleep on a defensive lineman for the Jaguars in the No. 7 spot and as we get closer the more I think that’s absolutely what the pick is going to be. The team has brought in a lot of pass rushers for pre-draft visits and interestingly did absolutely nothing in free agency on the defensive line. Compare that to say tight end where a few players were signed or right tackle where they signed two guys to compete, they did absolutely nothing on the defensive line.While I think everyone agrees that the Jaguars defensive line is good and talented, I do think people are sleeping on it’s need for fresh depth/guys who will play snaps. The team moved Dante Fowler Jr. midseason and they released Malik Jackson after the season in an expected cap cutting move. While Fowler was a disappointing first round pick, he was still a contributor to the pass rush and his contribution does need to be replaced and addressed. As for as Jackson Black Barry Church Jerseys , the Jaguars did draft Taven Bryan in 2018, but his rookie season was a whole lot of nothing.People constantly point to the 2017 season as proof of what the Jaguars defense can carry them to with even just bang average quarterback play and a solid run game. What is not being translated with that in 2019 however is that Folwer and Jackson combined for 16 sacks that season. Where is that coming from now? Are you getting that from Dawuane Smoot and Taven Bryan? I don’t think so.You also have to approach the point that Yannick Ngakoue is going into the final year of his rookie season and Calais Campbell is going to be one year older. I don’t think we will see a big drop of from Campbell yet and I do think the team re-signs Ngakoue prior to the start of the 2019 season, but these are still things you have to have in your mind.This is a draft that is top heavy on the defensive line with what a lot of people consider elite talent, so if you’re right there and one falls in your lap, it’s the perfect blend of value and need. While I think someone like T.J. Hockenson would be a fine pick at No. 7, I don’t think the gap in talent between he and whatever tight ends will be there in rounds two and three are so significant of a drop off that you have to take Hockenson in the Top 10. I feel the exact same way for Jonah Williams and Jawaan Taylor. Not to mention if it wasn’t for the Jaguars picking Taylor because they need a right tackle, I struggle to see him getting drafted in the Top 15. Is he really that good at right tackle to be a Top 10 pick?On the flip side the drop off from the defensive line from pick seven to pick 38 has a huge drop off. If you want one of the elite ones Barry Church Jerseys 2019 , you have to pick them early. Yes, I know that Ngakoue was a third round pick, but mid-round great pass rushers are few and far between. Those guys, much like quarterbacks, get snapped up quickly because they’re so important. With this being the 100th Bears season, it would seem fitting that we rank the 100 best Bears players of all time.Soon a team of volunteers for this was formed: myself, Jeff Berckes, who was as enthusiastic as me about the idea, historian Jack Silverstein, top boss Lester A. Wiltfong Jr., Optimist Prime Erik Christopher Duerrwaechter and film expert Jacob Infante.Then it came time to work up a methodology. We decided a vote would be good, but I had to turn to Jeff, our analytics man, to concoct a weighted system that would fairly balance out our personal bias and allow for a more complete list.Creating a list of the Top 100 players in Chicago Bears history is at best an imperfect science. The top of any list will feature the game’s best, players that transformed the game or defined their position, playing at peak levels for long periods of time. After that wave of transcendence, voters may go in different directions, balancing shorter careers with high peaks against long and solid careers with no discernible peaks. Post season honors, team success or lack thereof, games and years played, championships won, and statistical accumulation are just some of the factors that can weigh into an evaluation. Only one grading principle was agreed upon at the start – players should be compared to how they performed in their era against other players from their era. In other words, a more modern player may be athletically superior to a historic player but he should only be judged at his level of competition.Development of the list was an iterative process involving ten rounds of voting. A list of eligible players was collected and added to a player pool from a variety of sources. In the first round, the WCG contributors ranked the top 15 players in the history of the Chicago Bears using their own individual evaluation metrics. The votes were scored (1st place vote = 15 points, 15th place vote = 1 point) and added together to create a raw score. A weighted average was calculated by taking the total score multiplied by the number of ballots the player appeared on, divided by the number of possible ballots. This weighted score was used in situations to help “break ties” where scores were approximately equal. The top ten vote-getters from the first round were recorded in their respective ranks and cleared from the player pool. The voters repeated this process for a total of 10 rounds until a top 100 list was created.After allowing the dust to settle on the list, the group deliberated on any glaring issues including whether a player was ranked too high or too low or whether or not a snubbed player deserved inclusion. After reaching consensus, mostly minor alterations were made and the list was finalized. An important note - while it was not a written rule, there were enough contributors that considered the impact of players with fewer than 3 years of service to not be eligible for this list. That means current players like Eddie Jackson and Khalil Mack will not be on the list despite the likelihood of their inclusion in a list like this down the road.We also agreed that a players’ contributions mattered to their Bears playing career only. That means that there could be no inserting of “what ifs” for players such as Greg Olsen, Thomas Jones and Orlando Pace. Each a great player, but their contributions in Chicago were short and in the case the former two, great, while the latter was great elsewhere first but disappointing here. That also means that the coaching career of Mike Ditka was not to be weighed and George Halas’ importance as owner, coach and founder were also set aside in favor of only his playing days.This means that ours differs from the Bears’ own list Gale Sayers Jersey , which includes both Mack and Jackson and could very well have Ditka and Halas higher than we do (that’s a teaser, not a spoiler). Other than that, there will be some similarities and differences. It’s not meant to be gospel. I have specific memories of waking up to be sure that I did not miss an episode of my favorite show, and I recall vividly the overwrought frustration I felt when a family trip or event like a wedding prevented me from being able to watch Scooby Doo or Thunderbirds 2086 or whatever other magical entertaining I was captivated by that year.My children, on the other hand, do not know what it means to have to ‘wait’ for a show to be available. Oh, they understand that there are rules about how much television they get to watch, and they feel their own forms of frustration, but the opportunity to watch cartoons has gone from being a rare thing specific to particular times of the week to a surplus of options, regulated only by parental discipline.Opportunity, in other words, has lost its meaning to my children when it comes to cartoons. There are NFL fans who also fail to appreciate opportunity.Opportunity in the draftIt’s mock draft season, and while the Bears are more or less “out” of mock drafts this year http://www.thebearslockerroom.com/authentic-mike-singletary-jersey , it’s still easy to find fans of almost every team suggesting a dozen trades, where somehow a sixth-rounder, a future fourth-rounder, and a veteran backup guard are flipped and maneuvered into a pair of third-round picks that snag an all-star running back and an edge rusher who will probably be gone by Pick #40, anyway.Why do fans believe that this is what can and should happen? Because they read on a chart somewhere that it is possible, or out of 100 iterations of a draft simulator programmed to keep things exciting, they were offered a similar trade at least one time. They assume that ‘vaguely possible’ means the opportunity is always there. Over the years, I have leveled many criticisms at Ryan Pace, but the one thing that is obvious about him is that he understands the cost of opportunity.Let’s look at Ryan Pace’s most famous deal, the maneuvering to get Mitchell Trubisky. A rational fan (if that’s not an oxymoron) will admit that the verdict is still out on Trubisky. However, Ryan Pace did not “give up” three picks to draft Trubisky. Instead, he paid three picks (a third, a fourth, and a future third) to either guarantee the opportunity to make the selection or to deny others the same chance.To put it another way, if I am crossing my home state of South Dakota and I find my car running low on fuel, I might find myself stopping at a gas station on a highway (likely the only gas station around on that stretch of highway) and paying whatever number happens to be on the pump. I might pay more than I would have had I planned ahead and filled my tank where I knew there was cheaper gas, and I will almost certainly pay more than if I waited until I reached my destination and had a choice of stations in competition for my business. Any halfway competent student of economics understands that I am not just paying for the fuel itself. Instead, I am paying for the opportunity to have access to fuel when I want or need it, under the conditions I want it. This, in turn, rewards the owner of the gas station who planned ahead for how others would value that situation and so on. Back to Ryan Pace--he believed that there were only a couple of stations that sold the grade of fuel the Bears needed. He wanted to be sure he got the best available fuel. He then paid what he needed to pay to guarantee himself that opportunity. Critics will say he should have waited to see if he even needed to pay the increased price (i.e. maybe the next exit would have had fancy no-look pumps available). I have made that decision on road trips, only to find that the next exit is closed, or that the gas station I thought was there had gone out of business. On multiple occasions when needing fuel, I have also passed by gas stations, annoyed at the price on the pump, only to find as I have traveled that the price per gallon is higher at the next station instead of lower.Looked at through the lens of opportunity, the cost of trading draft picks makes sense. I generally agree with those who want to trade back and maximize the number of picks, because I think selling opportunity tends to get better results. However, it is ridiculous to think that opportunity should not have a cost.Consider the much simpler Anthony Miller trade. He wanted a receiver of Anthony Miller’s talent and potential, and he wanted him in 2018 Womens Dick Butkus Jersey , when he could grow with the new coach and the new system. The price of that player was a second-rounder, but the Bears did not have one to send at that moment, having spent theirs on James Daniels. The surcharge on get that ‘extra’ second-round selection (the extra price at the pump because they were at a solitary gas station in the middle of nowhere) was a fourth-rounder.Time and again, Pace pays the cost to get himself the opportunities he wants. Most mathematical models tell us he is going to be in the wrong over time. Consistently trading up is a way to lose out on value. However, if he finds better-than-expected results consistently in the draft (and that’s a big if, still), then he is leveraging opportunity well.Using the draft to buy opportunityKhalil Mack is a dominant football player, but is a single year of Khalil Mack worth two first round picks (with a bunch of other stuff floating around)? No. It’s not. How could it be, especially when that year is not being had on a price-controlled contract like a true first-round draft pick would be? Advanced analytics seemed to like the Raiders’ side of the equation, and despite the Bears’ 12-4 season, there seem to be plenty who are willing to criticize Pace’s aggression. This is so absurd it merits a painfully careful response.Pace didn’t buy a single year of Khalil Mack.When Pace traded for Mack, he was really buying the opportunity to sign Mack to a long-term contract and to deny others that opportunity. He then had to pay for a premium edge-rusher, and that was expensive (around $141 million dollars). However, the draft picks were not paid for the services of Khalil Mack. That’s what the contract was for. The draft picks were the price attached to the opportunity to offer that contract.This is where football fans traditionally want to have it both ways. They want their GM to get second-round picks for halfbacks who went to the Pro Bowl once as an alternate, but they also want their GMs to pay only a future seventh-rounder for moving up sixty spots to select the guard that the team needs.Do deals like this sometimes happen? Yes. And sometimes when you are lucky, you will pass up a gas station and find a cheaper price at a more convenient exit later on. It’s just not a guaranteed opportunity.When I was a little kid, I could have slept in and missed my favorite show. I could have hoped then that it would be on again in a rerun. However, I would have missed out on the enjoyment of seeing it that morning and of talking about it with my friends (i.e. Pace could have missed out on a 12-4 season with a new coach), and I also would have been gambling that it could be available again in the future (i.e. that another pass-rusher would be available for those picks in the future).Because of the way technology has advanced, there is no longer an urgency to getting up on Saturday morning for cartoons. Likewise, for fans who look back a year after a draft, it is easy to say “this is the player who should have been taken” or “the GM should have waited.” The reality is that in the moment, the opportunity to watch your favorite cartoon (or, more importantly, to fill your car’s tank) is not guaranteed. Pace seems to be trying to aggressively take opportunities. When it comes to debate, Alshon Jeffery has no issue generating buzz.As writers, we’re in an opinion business. There isn’t a single sliver of this team that doesn’t receive a piping hot take from each outlet covering the Eagles. Think about it; all off-season and even to this day we trade barbs over the fourth running back spot and third linebacker position. They barely play. Think of the heat a conversation surrounding a “WR1” will generate.The seesaw slams one on side. It slams on the other. Stats get twisted and lose all meaning. In the middle, the truth is an unrecognizable blur.And that’s when we collectively fail YOU Black Nate Gerry Jerseys , gentle reader. At the end there will be a conclusion; a summation about what value Jeffery brings to the Eagles.BODY TYPE/ATHLETICISMJeffery’s tall, lean frame of 6’3” and 218 pounds comes with long 33” arms and pickle jar hands (10 1/4”) that rank in the 93rd percentile. With this combination of height and length, he has a prototype frame for contested catches and jump balls with an understanding of how to leverage his size advantage against defenders.He’s never been very explosive out of his stance and his speed builds up quickly throughout the routes with his long strides. He’s a fluid athlete for his size, but he’s high cut and his long legs prevent him from remaining loose throughout chained changes of direction.Athleticism Grade: 4/7RELEASEJeffery limits the negative impact of his long lower body with step frequency at the line of scrimmage. This shows up when he’s faced with press coverage, which he defeats regularly.He understands leverage and how to attack it, getting on a defenders toes from press or off coverage and tilting them in the desired direction.His active hands, foot quickness, and play strength are particularly daunting for overaggressive cornerbacks who attempt to jam him. He has a full toolbox to deal with these situations. In the example below, Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson clearly intended to “quick jam”; his shoulders are past his toes with a forward lean and his feet are staggered, not parallel.Jeffery processes this information and executes a single move release. First, his feet come parallel or “come to balance” by bringing his back foot up and outside. His head comes with this step to the outside selling an outside release as he simultaneously moves his outside shoulder out of reach of Peterson. Pumping your arms to build up speed or using your inside arm to stave off contact through the route stem can be tough when dealing with a shoulder injury of that magnitude.Despite being stacked more frequently than in the past, Jeffery’s nuance at the line and when attacking press and off coverage have always been a staple of his game and he can be trusted to win much more often than not.Release Grade: 6/7SEPARATION QUICKNESSJeffery wins at the top of his routes not with quickness, but with technique. This allows him to be smooth throughout the break-point and snap off high difficulty cuts at high speeds.This route is great example of how technique can make up for lateral agility on a hard angle.If Jeffery reaches for the break-point with his route-side foot and gets his first step too far outside of his frame, his hips will lock. That would cause him to be disjointed out of his break and likely require extra steps to complete the turn.That’s rarely if ever the case with Jeffery. Starting with a inside stem on his release to influence the defender, he follows up by hitting his right foot at the break-point with his numbers over his knee. This is ideal. It allows him to sink with his steps compact through the cut as he snaps his chin back in concert with the rest of his body.The ability to create windows out of cuts is particularly hard for men Jeffery’s size, but he wins enough with technique for it to be considered a plus aspect of his game. Additionally, his play strength (6/7 grade) and positioning often allow him to create windows at the catch-point, which is a different type of separation but equally important.Separation Quickness Grade: 4/7FIND VOIDThis trait details a players ability to not only settle into zones, but to process information against all types of coverages and apply that to different types of routes.Jeffery finds seams not only in the middle of the field, but he also diagnoses the relationship between cornerback and safety in live action. This speaks to his play speed (5/7 grade), the combination of athleticism and mental processing. He’s able to regularly find soft spots in short-to-intermediate zones due to his ability to quickly read coverages pre-snap and post-snap.He also does well to sell run looks or smoke routes and dart to space Black Destiny Vaeao Jerseys , as evidenced by his 32-yard touchdown against the Aqib Talib and the Denver Broncos.Considering he’s had five different quarterbacks to establish relationships with over the past two years, any early chemistry issues with new quarterbacks can be forgiven and have been no issue over larger sample sizes. Quarterbacks and wide receivers need to see and process the action in unison, and the film history suggests that Jeffery works hard to cultivate that understanding.Find Void Grade: 6/7HANDSThere are two ways to look at Jeffery’s consistency as a pass catcher. First, there’s the often cited catch rate. Last year, for the first time since being a rookie, Jeffery’s catch rate dipped below 55%, coming in at a less than ideal 47.5%. Having addressed chemistry concerns already, let’s couple that together with drop rates.Jeffery’s drop rate typically comes in around 5%, which is perfectly acceptable. Last year, including the playoffs, Pro Football Focus attributed him with a 4.2% drop rate. That ranked tied for 7th best out of 46 qualifying receivers. From the second half of the season through the Super Bowl he caught 35 of 35 passes deemed “catchable”. In summation, catch rates can be and typically are wildly misleading.Jeffery’s long arms and big mitts allow him to routinely pluck the ball away from his frame and above his eyes and his build allows him to absorb contact at the catch-point. There are some drops above his eyes and away from his frame which are few and far between. His willingness to make catches over the middle is also a big part of his game that facilities him being effective to all three levels of the field.Hands Grade: 5/7BODY CONTROLThis one is easy for Jeffery. From my 2017 report from the Scouting Academy Summer Showcase:This trait was showcased in the biggest game of his career.Body Control Grade: 7/7YARDS AFTER CATCHYou’ve heard of “get what you block for back”, meant to knock a running back for his lack of ability to create on his own or get extra yards otherwise. That’s a high grade in a strict system that not many I have evaluated achieve.
