Will the Packers be able to land the top safety on this year’s market?"WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections The APC PodcastPackers Film RoomFantasy Football AdviceCSTShareTweetShareSharePackers projected to land free agent safety Earl Thomas by PFFJeff Hanisch-USA TODAY SportsOver the past decade Womens Kenny Clark Jersey , Earl Thomas has been the NFL’s best free safety. Thomas took over that mantle from Ed Reed, who was unquestionably the holder of that title during the 2000s. Thomas, a first-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2010, has recorded multiple interceptions in eight of his nine NFL seasons, is a three-time first-team All-Pro, and has been to six Pro Bowls. Simply put, the soon-to-be 30-year-old is as good as it gets. And this year, he will be on the free agent market. The Green Bay Packers have a gaping hole at free safety as they enter the 2019 offseason, with no legitimate long-term options once they traded Ha Ha Clinton-Dix to Washington in the middle of last year. The fit makes sense. The team has plenty of salary cap space. And for those reasons, Pro Football Focus predicts that Thomas will indeed sign in Green Bay when free agency begins.PFF’s Mike Renner made this prediction in an article wherein he provides guesses at where each of the top free agents on this year’s market will land. And although Thomas was the only player projected to Green Bay, if he signed it would tremendously change the trajectory of the team’s defense. In just four games last season, Thomas was on pace for one of his finest seasons. He had recorded three interceptions and five pass breakups before breaking a bone in his left leg in Arizona, landing him on injured reserve. Now Thomas is looking for what will probably be his last big contract, as he turns 30 years old in May. Thomas’ last deal with the Seahawks Lance Kendricks Jersey , signed before the 2014 season, was a four-year contract extension that paid him $40 million. Thomas earned every dollar of that deal, but reportedly wanted a new contract last offseason, only to see the Seahawks rebuff his request.Given Thomas’ age and recent injury concerns — he also finished the 2016 season on injured reserve with a broken leg — it’s possible that his value on the open market could be similar in terms of total dollars to that 2014 contract. Although the salary cap has risen over the past four years, Thomas also got older. However, when available he has still played at an elite level and both season-ending injuries were freak broken bones, not issues that suggest any chronic or ongoing problems. If Thomas would be willing to agree to a $10 million per year deal in Green Bay, general manager Brian Gutekunst should jump at that opportunity. Thomas would provide the Packers with not just a reliable safety, but one who is a true playmaker, who has an excellent mind, and who can be trusted to man the deep middle of the field. Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine would love a player like that on his unit. The Packers got a combined seven years out of four draft picks at 30 overall." />Skip to main contentclockmenumore-arrownoyesHorizontal - WhiteAcme Packing Companya Green Bay Packers communityLog In or Sign UpLog InSign UpFanpostsFanshotsSectionsPackersOddsAboutMastheadCommunity GuidelinesStubHubMoreAll 322 blogs on Horizontal - WhiteFanposts Fanshots Sections The APC PodcastPackers Film RoomFantasy Football AdviceCDTShareTweetShareSharePackers Draft History: Picking at 30 overall, Green Bay has had little lasting successThe Green Bay Packers hold ten draft picks in the 2019 NFL Draft, and for a team that has a storied, 100-year history Jake Ryan Jersey White , they have predictably made selections in the past at every one of these draft slots. Over the next few days leading up to this year’s draft, Acme Packing Company will examine the Packers’ history at each current slot for 2019, as well as run down the names of recent picks around the league at the position. The Packers have made the 30th selection in the NFL Draft four times, the same number of picks that they have made at 12th overall. However, while the team found a Hall of Famer at 12, they have had much less success at 30. In fact, the Packers’ four draft picks at that slot played a combine seven seasons for the franchise, and the most recent pick had a significant flame-out with the coaching staff before being dealt away before his rookie contract expired.Packers History at 301950: Gordie Soltau, EThe first of those picks was end Gordie Soltau from Minnesota. However, Soltau never played for the Packers, instead ending up in San Francisco. He made three Pro Bowls and one All-Pro team there. He amassed 3,487 receiving yards and 25 touchdowns and also contributed as the team’s kicker for most of his career, making 42 of 70 field goal attempts and 284 of 303 PATs.1966: Tom Cichowski, OTThe team’s next 30th pick also never played for Green Bay. They drafted offensive tackle Tom Cichowski in 1966 Womens Marwin Evans Jersey , but he played for the AFL’s Denver Broncos for two years before his career came to a close.1997: Ross Verba, OLThe next two picks will be much more memorable for younger Packers fans. Ron Wolf selected Iowa offensive lineman Ross Verba at #30 in 1997, making him the team’s first selection after winning Super Bowl XXXI. He played left tackle and left guard in Green Bay for four years before heading to Cleveland as a free agent in 2001.2015: Damarious Randall, CBFinally, the most recent pick at 30 is a painful one, as Ted Thompson made Arizona State defensive back Damarious Randall the choice in 2015. Randall, a college safety and slot defender, was asked to play cornerback in Green Bay before being unceremoniously traded to the Browns during the 2018 offseason for quarterback DeShone Kizer. Randall famously got himself benched after a sideline tirade, leading to the team’s player leadership council requesting that the team release him outright midway through the 2017 season.Randall has recorded at least three interceptions in each of his four NFL seasons, with two-pick sixes (both before his trade from Green Bay).Recent History at #302018: Mike Hughes, CB, UCF (Vikings)2017: T.J.
