Apple releases a new iPhone every year. In 2021, we got the iPhone 13, and this year we're expecting the iPhone 14.

Buzz about the new iPhone lineup started nearly a year ago, but now we're just three weeks away from the rumored launch date on Sept. 7. As we inch closer to the iPhone 14's possible announcement, fans still have plenty of questions. Will Apple raise prices for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro?
iPhone 14 lineup rumors: Will there still be four phones?

We still don't know much about the iPhone 14, but we've heard that and focus on larger phones instead. A 2021 report from Nikkei Asian Review predicted the death of the iPhone 14 Mini, and a research note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo obtained by MacRumors also suggested that the Mini was not long for this world. However, Kuo reported, the , a "high-end" and a "lower-end," with two size options for each.

While name speculation isn't as germane to the discussion of Apple's 2022 lineup as it was for unlucky 13, rumors suggest a small shift in naming conventions, with an iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max, with "Pro" designating higher-end specs and "Max" referring to the larger screen size.

Read more: iPhone 13 vs. 13 Mini vs. Pro vs. Pro Max

iPhone 14 size rumors: How large will screens be?

Apple's last two iPhone lineups have featured the same 6.1-inch size for the base model, going up to 6.7 inches for the Pro Max. According to the same Nikkei Asian Review report, Apple will stick with these sizes for the iPhone 14, but delete the 5.4-inch Mini. This rumor is corroborated by a . Reports showed , so it'll be no surprise should Apple retire the small phone in 2022.

Although the size of the next iPhone is expected to stay the same, the display bezels for the Pro Max are rumored to be 20 percent smaller compared to previous iPhone generations, according to CAD renders shared by Twitter leaker ShrimpApplePro. This means the screen would be slightly larger. However, it's important to note that this rumor should be taken with a grain of salt since ShrimpApplePro doesn't have an extensive track record to support their speculations.

In 2020, rumors began to surface that iPhone was ditching physical SIM cards entirely, and now a chain of leaks suggests that the iPhone 14 might be the first line to do it. 9to5Mac broke down the cascade of leaks, which started with a Brazilian site claiming the iPhone 15 Pro would go physically SIM-less. Then MacRumors reported an anonymous tip that Apple was preparing major carriers for eSIM-only phones by September. Apple leaker DylanDKT confirmed being "in agreement" with reports of the tray for physical SIM cards being removed, though his Twitter account has seemingly disappeared since.

Release date: Will the iPhone 14 arrive in the fall?

There haven't yet been many reputable release date rumors for the iPhone 14, but a recent Bloomberg report suggests the new iPhone will make its debut and go on sale Sept. 16.

Apple holds its annual fall iPhone event in September almost every year, with the phones being released shortly thereafter, usually the Friday of the following week. Sometimes Apple will stagger release dates for specific models, especially when introducing a new design or size. So it's possible that the iPhone 14 lineup will have more than one release date.

Here's what we know:

Apple likes to hold its events on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. Apple's iPhone 13 event was held on Tuesday, Sept. 14.

iPhone release dates are typically a week and a half after Apple's announcements.

In general, new iPhones are released on a Friday, around the third week of September. For the iPhone 13, preorders began Sept. 17 and the phones went on sale Sept. 24.

A few years ago, CNET took a deep dive into the Apple event timeline and emerged with a compelling . Based on the 2022 calendar, the Labor Day rule would put the September Apple event (and unveiling of the iPhone 14) on the same dates suggested in Bloomberg's report. However, our Labor Day hypothesis was -- and, businesslogr.com because of coronavirus delays, .

Read more: iPhone 13 vs. iPhone 12

Apple didn't make any major price changes between 2020's iPhone 12 and 2021's iPhone 13. But with bigger changes expected to be on the way for the iPhone 14, it's reasonable to believe that Apple may raise prices in 2022.

The new iPhone may see a $100 price increase, according to Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives. "Prices have been increasing across the whole supply chain, and Cupertino needs to pass these costs to the consumer on this release," Ives told The Sun. Kuo also estimates that Apple may increase the price for its new iPhone.

However, other rumors suggest that the iPhone 14 will share the same price as last year's model, or will be even cheaper. A Korean leaker who goes by the handle yeux1122 suggests Apple plans to "freeze" the price of the base model of the iPhone 14.

For reference, here's how much each version of the iPhone 13 lineup cost at launch.

Camera rumors: A better front-facing camera and more for the iPhone 14?

Apple may have a few camera upgrades in store for the upcoming iPhone 14. Rumors say the tech giant has to make a higher-end lens. According to a report from Korean tech site ET News, citing unnamed industry sources, South Korean supplier LG Innotek will provide the new selfie camera for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.

Kuo also shared insights about the iPhone 14's potential camera upgrades in an investors note reported on by 9to5Mac just after the iPhone 13 launch. In the note, Kuo predicts a hole-punch front camera, making the iPhone 14 notchless, as well as a , up from 12 megapixels on previous iPhones.

Display analyst Ross Young hypothesizes, however, that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will have a hole-and-pill shaped design to accommodate for the front-facing camera and Face ID. The hole cutout is believed to be for the Face ID dot projector, and the pill-shaped cutout holds the front camera and Face ID camera, according to a January report from MacRumors. Supposedly leaked CAD renders of the iPhone 14, seen by 91mobiles, corroborate this rumor.

Kuo's speculation regarding the camera's megapixel capacity aligns with both a recent research note from Haitong International Securities, also reported on by MacRumors, and a report from research company TrendForce. Both Jeff Pu and TrendForce hypothesize the two Pro models will be equipped with a 48-megapixel wide lens. Pu, however, adds that the iPhones will sport a triple-lens rear camera system with a 12-megapixel ultrawide and telephoto lenses in addition to the 48-megapixel wide lens. The analyst adds that the Pro versions of the iPhone 14 could sport 8GB of RAM, as well. (In comparison, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max have 6GB.) This is corroborated by a report from a Korean blog that cites domestic supply chain sources, as MacRumors spotted.

include a new , and some improvements in zoom capabilities. We had previously reported on rumors that the entire lineup would feature , but lidar ended up making an appearance only on the after all. It's possible Apple might expand the feature to its full lineup in 2022 instead, but we haven't heard anything yet.

Another of the on is an improved telephoto lens. While the iPhone 13 Pro's zoom capabilities were given a 3x optical zoom, it still pales in comparison to a lot of competitor flagships, including , which boasts a 10x optical zoom.

The feature that seems to get kicked down the road the most in Apple rumor world is the return of Touch ID. Early rumors supported the Touch ID's return coming in the iPhone 12, and when that didn't happen, speculation turned to the iPhone 13. But even before the iPhone 13 launched (sans Touch ID), word on the street had shifted again: . Now, that's looking less likely, too. In late September, Kuo predicted that it won't be until 2023 that the iPhone regains Touch ID technology. That would be… the iPhone 15?

Design rumors: iPhone 14 might be notchless... or will it?

YouTuber and iPhone leaker Jon Prosser (whose track record is admittedly spotty) made waves the week before the iPhone 13 announcement by releasing renders he commissioned of the iPhone 14 Pro Max based on "real images and schematics" leaked to him from purported sources at Apple.

Prosser's renders corroborate a number of previously reported rumors, including the previously reported by Kuo, and the , which was first referenced in a 2021 report from JPMorgan Chase. We'd been expecting to see the iPhone 13 go notchless, but instead we got a , notch. Apple introduced the world to the notched display in 2017 with the release of the iPhone X, and as rivals solved the selfie conundrum with hole-punch and under-display cameras, Apple still hasn't, er, taken it down a notch.

Read more:

But Prosser's renders seem to align with these that Apple would finally excise the iPhone's notch in 2022. And Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also hinted at its removal in a September edition of his Power On newsletter, wherein he predicted a "complete redesign" for the iPhone 14, while Young says Apple could introduce a hole-and-pill shaped design for the new iPhone. This hole-and-pill display emerged in schematics on Chinese social media site Weibo, and were later shared by Prosser.

Those who've been crossing their fingers for a and had their hopes dashed once can possibly now look forward to a potential realization of their all-screen dreams in 2022's iPhone 14.

However, before you get too excited, there's a possibility that not all the iPhone 14 models will get a new notchless design. MySmartPrice published supposed CAD renders of the iPhone 14 in March, depicting -- you guessed it -- a notch. But renders of the 14 Pro model published the day before on 91Mobiles do show a notchless display. If these rumors prove true, it looks like you'll have to spring for the Pro in order to get rid of the notch.

A schematic of the iPhone 14's display, shared to YouTube by Jon Prosser.
Jon Prosser

iPhone 14 says buh-bye to the camera bump but will it keep the Lightning port?

The other big design change Prosser's renders show is a flattened camera bump. According to Prosser, the iPhone 14's body is going to be a "thick boy," thick enough, it seems, to encompass all the camera hardware without an annoying, protruding camera setup on the back. Why is the iPhone 14 supposed to be so thick? Perhaps to house a bigger battery, or even the , which Kuo projected in 2020. However, Kuo and famed tech leaker Max Weinbach have actually pointed to a thicker camera bump in the 14 Pro and Pro Max.

Two prior rumors that won't pan out, according to Prosser at least, are the and the addition of , however). Rumors of a have been circulating for a while, but it appears those won't come true in 2022.

There's the punchline about whether something, usually an expensive something, will also do your laundry for you, ostensibly to make it worth its expense. With an actual washing machine, that answer is basically yes. And some good news is, you don't actually have to shell out for a great washing machine to find one that will fit your lifestyle and budget, and, you know, do your laundry. While even the best washing machine may not be able to load itself and transfer your clothes to the dryer, with a bevy of smart-enabled units and all manner of functions and cycles to choose from, we may be getting close to the washing machine that actually does it all. (Now if we could also find a dryer that folds, we'd really be in business.)

When choosing a new washing machine, consider that most units are between 24 and 29 inches wide, with variable depths that are typically between 24 and 34 inches, so your first step is to narrow the list by what fits your available space. Beyond that, aspects such as front-loading or top-loading functionality, capacity, available cycles or a combination of all of these are the most important features to consider when buying a new washing machine.

Read more: There's Probably Mold in Your Washing Machine. Here's How to Get Rid of It

On average, washing machines run between $600 and $900. But there are units on either side of that average if you're looking for either a very basic model to get the job done or a tricked-out washer with every available feature. (Remember that the self-loading washing machine does not as of yet exist.) I evaluated several models at various price points, sizes and features, to bring you the best washing machines for 2022.

Looking for more home appliance recommendations?
If price is the major factor in choosing your washing machine, this American-made, top-loading Amana model has over five figures of positive reviews between the major retailer sites. The bells and whistles are fewer, and the capacity is only 3.5 cubic feet, but you still get a reliable, straightforward appliance that offers several basic cycles, businesslogr.com plus an auto-sensing water level feature that monitors water use and volume and adjusts throughout the cycle accordingly. Despite its lower cost, users frequently remarked positively about the cleanliness of clothing, and that it even ran quieter than expected.

The build for this one seems solid although the look is rather basic. One thing I noticed is that this model does not have a fabric softener slot, so you'll have to just drop it in or buy a separate dispenser.

Best Buy rating: 4.4 out of 5 based on 5,465 reviews

Lowe's rating: 4.7 out of 5 based on 9,651 reviews

$500 at Best Buy

It's not always about the features that you most regularly use, but about having features available that you might sometimes need to use. If available features are driving your comparative shopping experience for washing machines, GE offers a top-tier, front-loading model with consistent customer satisfaction and just about every available add-on. While it is more expensive than the models listed above, it is still slightly less expensive than other models that offer as many features as it does.

This washing machine offers 5 cubic feet of space, is smart-technology enabled and comes with a whopping 12 standard cycles, including a quick wash cycle and a sanitize function for items such as towels and gym clothes that can commonly attract mildew through moisture. A steam option is also available to help vaporize deep stains, an automatic detergent dispenser measures for you based on the size of the load, and a venting feature allows the washing machine to dry out between cycles even with its door closed. In a sea of otherwise white, black, and stainless steel machines, this GE washer is also, refreshingly, navy blue.

Because of the many features, this model sports a more complex control panel -- a combination of digital and manual dials -- but one I found intuitive and easy to adjust. It has a sleek, modern look and is available in white or sapphire blue.

Best Buy rating: 4.6 out of 5 based on 499 reviews

Lowe's rating: 4.6 out of 5 based on 4,519 reviews

$1,215 at Best Buy

                            website

            class=" lazy"
alt=""

height="362"
width="644"
/>

website WKEX200HBA
' rel="noopener nofollow" target="_blank">

While many people do buy matching washer/dryer sets, it's almost never a requirement to do so. However, if your available laundry space is narrow and requires a stackable washer/dryer, (because why resort to air drying if you don't have to?) this LG washer/dryer tower has extremely favorable reviews, offers 4.5 cubic feet of space in the washer and 7.4 cubic feet in the dryer, and only requires 27 inches of width to accommodate it. Among its 10 wash cycles is Allergiene, which uses steam to help remove excess pet dander and dust.

This model is about as sleek as washer/dryer combos get with a fully digital display and control panel.
With full-size washing machines averaging about 27 inches wide, this 24-inch model from GE offers a reliable solution for smaller spaces (or smaller door frames). Offering 2.8 cubic feet of space, this petite unit still offers eight wash cycles, including Speed Wash. Users often remarked in reviews about being the best available for a condominium setting, and how the drum still felt like plenty of space to do even large loads of laundry. A folding lid keeps the vertical space requirement on the low side as well or allows for the possibility of a stacked, compatible dryer.

The detergent and fabric softener drawers are set in the back while a dedicated bleach opening sits separately towards the front of the rim. Because it's a top-loading unit, you won't be able to stack a dryer on top which is something to consider if floor space is limited in your laundry space.

Home Depot rating: 4.4 out of 5 based on 164 reviews

Lowe's rating: 4.3 out of 5 based on 85 reviews

$900 at Best Buy

How we evaluate washing machines

I researched the washing machines on this list by analyzing specs and user reviews from major appliance retailer sites such as Best Buy, Home Depot and Lowe's. I also considered their best-selling and top-rated models, and the available features compared to price as a measure of each machine's overall value. I focused primarily on those models that had a rating of at least 4.5 stars with at least 500 reviews, or at least the highest rating among the highest number of ratings for the feature or size I was evaluating.

Most modern washing machines are Energy Star Certified by the EPA.
Whirlpool

Only washing machines that were Energy Star Certified by the EPA were considered, for peace of mind concerning energy use and water efficiency. I dove deep into user comments and ratings to ensure there were no recurring problems, issues, or complaints among a particular brand or model. I looked for evidence of various models' ability to treat heavy stains, and for those who had especially positive commentary on delicate cycles that actually treated delicate fabrics delicately.

While we didn't do extensive hand-on testing for this list of best washing machines, I was able to examine several models in various appliance showrooms to get a feel for each unit, and the intuitiveness of its control panel, dials and knobs.

Washing machine buying guide

Washing machine size

The space you have available to accommodate a washing machine is the first consideration toward buying one. Most washing machines are between 24 and 29 inches wide, with variable depths that are typically between 24 and 34 inches. Capacity and size generally go hand-in-hand, with typical models offering you about 4.5 cubic feet of space for your textiles. Extra large capacity models are generally anything above 5 cubic feet, and if you're working with a narrower space in your home, expect to find a washer that only has about 3 cubic feet of space or less. You may have to send out your large comforters and winter coats, but you'll still be able to do average loads of laundry comfortably.

I looked for intuitive controls and settings when evaluating washing machines.
Tyler Lizenby/CNET

Washing machine styles

Washing machines typically come as top-loading or front-loading models. Top-loading models tend to have larger capacities and utilize an agitator -- a central column that moves your clothes around -- in order to scrub your laundry. Front-loading models may have slightly less capacity and generally work with an impeller, which helps rotate your clothing around the basin so that the clothes rub up against each other for stain removal. One Whirlpool model has a removable agitator for versatility and the potential of even extra capacity. Top-loading models can be a little easier on the back, as they require less bending to load and unload, but are not as readily available as stackable options with a dryer if you don't have space to accommodate a washer and dryer side-by-side. Most washing machines come in white, black, or stainless steel finishes, with white generally being the least expensive option.

Samsung's WW9800T washing machine uses AI and big data to choose the right cycle for each load.
Samsung

Washing machine cycles

Even basic model washing machines tend to have at least normal, delicate, and heavy-duty cycles, which automatically adjust the heat, water level, and length of cycle settings. Some machines may have pre-set cycles for color loads versus white loads, and then there's a reliable permanent press, which is typically a cycle setting for synthetic materials that are minimally wrinkly. More expensive and digital models tend to have a larger variety of cycle settings, including ones that are specific for bedding or towels, ones that use steam to manage allergens such as pet dander and dust or a sanitize cycle that can help manage mildewed items. You'll typically be using the same couple of settings regularly, so keep that in mind when deciding how much money you want to spend on a washing machine.

Washing machine FAQs

How long should a washing machine last?

Washing machines, similar to many major appliances, are built to last about 10 years. If you have a small household or only use your washing machine minimally, that may extend its utility for a few more years. Taking care of it and cleaning it will also help extend a washing machine's life. Read CNET's tips for .

What is the difference between a front-loading and a top-loading washing machine?

The major difference between front-loading and top-loading washing machines is capacity, with top-loading washing machines typically having more space available for your loads of laundry. Beyond that, you may want to consider who is using the washing machine. Top-loaders are typically easier on the back and require less bending than front-loading models, but are more difficult for children to access. (Whether you also require your washing machine to entertain kids or pets may be worth thinking about, in which case: front-loader.) Also, you may need to consider whether or not you need to stack a dryer on top of your washer. There are stackable options with both top- and front-loading washing machines, but you have more options with a front-loading model.

What does High Efficiency mean in a washing machine?

High Efficiency is separate from Energy Star certification, but both should give you peace of mind concerning your washing machine's energy and water usage. High Efficiency specifically governs water usage, with models that typically require less detergent and use less water than older models that are not indicated as High Efficiency.
Should I get a washing machine warranty and how important is it?

Your washing machine should last you about 10 years without the need for any major repairs, but a warranty is definitely a good thing to have since it is a large, expensive appliance that probably adds a great deal of convenience and comfort to your living situation. Most manufacturer warranties cover replacement parts and labor for one year from the date of purchase, designed to protect you if you've unassumingly purchased a damaged or defective unit, plus 10 years for your washer's direct drive motor, where applicable. Extended warranty or third-party options are also available for an additional cost.

More kitchen advice

Best Dishwasher for 2022

Best Refrigerator for 2022

Best Dishwasher Features of 2022

Best Countertop Oven and Air Fryer

The 5 Best Air Fryers for 2022

Best Nonstick Frying Pans, Tested and Reviewed

Best Stainless Steel Skillets

Best Electric Kettle of 2022

Best Rice Cookers for 2022

Best Knife Sharpener for 2022

Best Food Processors of 2022

Best Rice Cookers

6 Essential Kitchen Tools

Jeremy Corbyn's rapturously received conference speech promising 'socialism for the 21st century' coincided with the publication of a poignant series of photographs taken inside the former British Leyland car plant at Longbridge, in Birmingham.

While the Labour leader was outlining his plans for a National Investment Bank, State intervention in industry, greater power for the unions and higher taxes, these photos offered a stark reminder of where such an antediluvian economic policy leads.

Shot inside what remains of the abandoned factory, littered with a few rusting husks of half-built Rovers and MGs, the pictures are a monument to industrial decay created by socialist folly.

The policies which Corbyn expounds were tested to destruction by Labour in the Seventies.

The ailing British Leyland was nationalised in 1975, with the government taking a controlling stake.

Shot inside what remains of the abandoned factory, littered with a few rusting husks of half-built Rovers and MGs, the pictures are a monument to industrial decay created by socialist folly

Even though it still had a 40 per cent share of the UK car market, it was a basket case.

The company was a byword for union militancy and shoddily built, unreliable vehicles, such as the hideously ugly Austin Allegro, often described as the worst car of all time. It was quickly nicknamed the 'All Aggro' because of its multiple faults both in design and manufacture.

RELATED ARTICLES

Previous

1

Next

The car factory where time has stalled: Haunting photographs... McDonnell set for Privy Council...and he won't kneel before... Pressure grows on Labour to suspend Corbyn ally after... Are you ready for 21st Century SOCIALISM? In the late Seventies, I was industrial correspondent of the Birmingham Evening Mail, daily documenting the decline of the British motor industry.

The Allegro had a square steering wheel. Yes, really.
You couldn't make it up. Who thought that was a good idea? It must have been the work of that committee which set out to design a horse but ended up with a camel.

In an attempt to take the car upmarket, they decided to produce a 'luxury' Vanden Plas model, complete with a ridiculous ornate radiator grille.

To use another animal analogy, it only served to prove that although you can put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig.

Corbyn would return Britain to one in which politicians decide on investment plans, intervene in struggling companies and put workers (ie: shop stewards) on the board

The leader was introduced for his speech by a 'community activist' who pleaded for the party to get behind their 'socialist leader'

Not that the management had much else to do.

British Leyland was effectively run by the unions, nowhere more aggressively than at Longbridge. The shop stewards' negotiating committee — which if memory serves correctly boasted more than 120 members — was led by works' convener Derek 'Red Robbo' Robinson.

Robbo was a Communist clown from central casting, a Brummie version of the stroppy Peter Sellers character in the satire I'm All Right Jack.

During one 12-month period in 1978-79, he was instrumental in 523 separate disputes, costing more than £200 million in lost production. Even that was a drop in the ocean of public money poured into the company by the government without any prospect of it ever turning a profit.

The Thatcher Cabinet decided to cut its losses by splitting up and privatising British Leyland, which at its peak employed around 150,000 people.

The mass market Austin Morris division passed through several incarnations before ending up belonging to a Chinese corporation, which washed its hands of Longbridge in 2005.

British Leyland was effectively run by the unions, nowhere more aggressively than at Longbridge

Some parts — such as Jaguar, Land Rover and Mini — however, are all now thriving under private foreign ownership.

It is worth reflecting that if they had remained in a nationalised British Leyland, preserved in aspic in 1979, they would have gone to the wall, too — but only after billions of pounds of taxpayers' money had been tipped down the gurgler.

Yet that is the world to which Corbyn would return Britain, one in which politicians decide on investment plans, intervene in struggling companies and put workers (ie: shop stewards) on the board.

Red Robbo was eventually sacked when his own union tired of him, sick of the damage his campaign of strikes was inflicting on their members.

He's now in his 80s and was last seen flogging the Communist Morning Star newspaper outside a funeral service in the Black Country.

Robbo's Seventies spirit lives on in the ample shape of Len McCluskey, leader of Unite, which bankrolls the Corbynista project and helped fashion the Labour leader's Life On Mars economic policies.

The Longbridge photos - which can be seen in full at MailOnline - are a haunting illustration of the consequences of throwing good money after bad, allowing industrial strategy to be dictated by Left-wing politicians and putting bolshie trades unionists in charge of commercial enterprises.

Back in the Seventies, Longbridge was a bustling factory employing 25,000 people.

Well, businesslogr.com I say 'bustling'. Most of the time it was at a complete standstill, either as a result of yet another wildcat strike or because the 'workers' simply couldn't be bothered to do any work.

The Longbridge photos are a haunting illustration of the consequences of throwing good money after bad, allowing industrial strategy to be dictated by Left-wing politicians

There was one famous Evening Mail front page which featured pictures of workers fast asleep on the production line, taken by a photographer who had sneaked in during the night shift.

The staff were camped out on the back seats of cars they were supposed to be assembling. They'd even taken their own pillows and blankets. Apparently, this was par for the course.

The unions ruled the roost and employees could behave pretty much as they liked.

Any attempt to discipline them would inevitably result in an immediate walk-out, so the managers didn't bother.

Industrial anarchy, idleness and pilfering were the order of the day. We bought our house in Birmingham from a man who worked in the body shop and had decorated the place with paint he'd liberated from work.

When we moved in, it had a British Racing Green cloakroom and one of the walls in the kitchen was a fetching metallic brown colour, from the Morris Marina range.

Here's another story which still makes me smile.
I took a phone call one day from an agitated reader who had just bought a new Rover.

He'd only had the car a week and all the paint was falling off. The dealership didn't want to know. He'd been driving it, hadn't he?

Could I help?

Rather than write the story and get inundated with calls from thousands of other disgruntled owners, I rang a mate in the Press office and asked him to sort it out.

A couple of weeks later the chap with the Rover called back to thank me.

They'd taken in his car for a complete respray and given him a loaner while it was being repaired.

'So everything's fine?' I said.

'Up to a point,' he replied.

'What do you mean, up to a point?'

'Well, the paintwork's great, but while the car was in the factory, somebody nicked the stereo.'

Put your trousers on, Hyphen-Howe, you won't be missed

So farewell, then, Bernard Hyphen-Howe.

The Met commissioner has resigned before he could be pushed. Mother Theresa has withdrawn her love and the new Labour Mayor of London Sadiq Khan wants his own tame police chief.

Bernard turned up on Nick Ferrari's LBC radio show in Edif Piaf mode.

He regretted rien, although he did claim he hadn't deliberately set out to alienate the Press. That's difficult to believe, given the heavy-handed tactics and dawn raids he employed during the deranged witch-hunt against journalists falsely accused of phone-hacking and bribing public officials.

He'd like to be remembered for keeping London safe from terrorism, particularly during the Olympics.

But his record is seriously marred not just by the phone-hacking fiasco, but also by the hounding of innocent celebrities and other prominent figures caught up in the 'historic' sex crimes crusade. And especially by his appalling treatment of 92-year-old war hero Lord Bramall and the late Leon Brittan, a former Home Secretary, which is expected to be heavily criticised in a forthcoming official report.

His record is seriously marred not just by the phone-hacking fiasco, but also by the hounding of innocent celebrities and other prominent figures caught up in the 'historic' sex crimes crusade

The use of police bail to keep suspects hanging in limbo for years, and the zealous exercising of search powers to ransack homes, have also been routinely abused on his watch.

Bernard's handling of the 2011 London riots wasn't exactly exemplary, either, given that officers were ordered initially to stand back and watch the burning and looting.

Within Scotland Yard, morale is said to be at rock bottom and a number of Bernard's favourites in 'senior management' have faced bullying charges or been allowed to retire early to avoid disciplinary action.

Let's hope Sadiq Khan chooses his successor wisely.

The dedicated coppers of the Met — and the people of London — deserve much better than they've had from Hyphen-Howe.

It's gone doolally down in Nappy Valley...

Parents on Anglesey have been ordered to present their children's birth certificates before dustmen will collect dirty nappies — and then only fortnightly.

The council says they will refuse to take them away if the child is aged three or over, by which time they should be potty trained.

Here's yet another example of the bonkers bureaucracy generated by what should be the simple business of emptying dustbins.

I probably get more emails and letters about refuse collection than anything else.

Why the hell won't councils just get on with the job we pay them to do?

And as if fortnightly collections for disposable nappies weren't disgraceful enough, Anglesey council now says it will only take away general household waste every three weeks.

If I still had young kids and any dustman asked me for their birth certificate, he'd leave wearing a pile of dirty nappies on his head.

Most of these absurd rules are justified by EU directives on recycling and landfill, gold-plated when they arrive here.

Now we've voted for Brexit, we should be entitled to scrap them.

But I wouldn't hold your breath — not unless you've got a dustbin full of dirty nappies.

Mooning — exposing your buttocks in public — has been made illegal in Victoria, Australia.

Down Under, mooning could get you six months. In Britain, it could win you the Turner Prize.
