The Dolphins had 2016 first-round pick Laremy Tunsil play left guard to start his career, but moved him back to his college position of left tackle last season.

There is an old saying that NFL means Not For Long in the circles of the league. This is to say that everyone is replaceable in the NFL motto of things. Meanwhile running backs like Ezekiel Elliott, David Johnson and Todd Gurley have huge weights to carry as the lead running backs on rosters that are supposed to take the next step. Then there are super star wide receivers like Julio Jones, Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham Jr that change the way other teams must play defense when they are on the field.

But for the other 95 percent of the players at these positions the franchise could move on from them at the drop of a hat. In those situations, teams continue to look for the next answer as the starting quarterback and not the current one. This is where you will also see a lot of 鈥渞unning back by committee鈥?rosters because teams don鈥檛 want to pay one player all of the money when their lifespan is so short. And out wide with so many three or four sets their talent can be replaced by game planning around the more is better philosophy.

Here are seven quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers whose time as starting players in the NFL is quickly ending. Some of those players will get beaten out by young players while others will happen naturally because the team wants a change. Either way they are going to be replaced quick, fast and in a hurry in 2018.

A smiling David Tepper jogged down a small makeshift runway at a crowded gymnasium, crouching as he went to slap hands with wildly cheering elementary school children clad in blue Carolina Panthers T-shirts while music blared.

Tepper made his first charitable donation to the Carolinas on Tuesday through his foundation, giving away 12,000 new backpacks and school supplies to 17 elementary schools across the Charlotte, North Carolina, area including those students at Thomasboro Academy.

"It's been great," said a smiling Tepper of his first seven weeks as owner.

The self-made multi-billionaire hedge fund owner is 60, but still remembers his days growing up in Pittsburgh in a lower-income household. His mother worked as a teacher at an inner city school, and he got to see firsthand how difficult it was for her to provide school supplies for her students.

He also remembers walking to school with a brown bag because he didn't have a backpack. In high school he would sometimes hitch rides to school.

When he purchased the Panthers for an NFL-record $2.2 billion from Jerry Richardson in July, Tepper said he immediately thought of supporting schoolchildren, calling them "our future."

"I thought it was a great way to start off [url=http://www.chargerscheapstore.com/joe-barksdale-jersey-cheap]Joe Barksdale Jersey[/url] ," said Tepper, who is known for his philanthropy in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Said Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis: "He comes in here with that same mindset we have (as players) with giving back to the community."

Tepper is quickly becoming a popular figure in the Charlotte area.

Unlike Richardson, who is more stoic and formal and kept out of the spotlight, Tepper exudes the feel of an ordinary guy, often dressing in khaki shorts, a golf shirt and a baseball hat.

Prior to the Panthers' first preseason game, he tailgated with fans and knocked back a few beers.

"He's easy to talk to, he's approachable and he likes being around the guys," Panthers linebacker Luke Kuechly said.

When he bought the Panthers [url=http://www.dolphinscheapstore.com/andre-branch-jersey-cheap]Andre Branch Jersey[/url] , Tepper vowed to change the culture and make it more of a family atmosphere where people are comfortable in the workplace regardless of race, gender or religion.

That came after allegations surfaced of sexual and racial misconduct in the workplace by Richardson while owner of the Panthers. He was later fined $2.7 million by the NFL when reports were substantiated following a six-month investigation. The reports ultimately prompted Richardson, the team's founder, to put the franchise up for sale.

Tepper is already shaking it up, doing things his way.

The Panthers have worn two different uniform combinations in their first two preseason home games and there's talk of possibly incorporating a black helmet into the mix 鈥?a look Richardson would never go for.

Tepper is also expected to put the Panthers logo at midfield for the team's first regular-season home game; Richardson always made sure the NFL shield was at midfield for more than two decades to honor the league.

Tepper wants to build an indoor/outdoor practice football facility in South Carolina, just over the border.

The Panthers have never had an indoor practice facility under Richardson.

Tepper hasn't talked much about plans for a new stadium, but it's something he'll have to consider at some point as Bank of America 鈥?completed in 1995 鈥?is now one of the older stadiums in the league.

Last week, Tepper hired Tom Glick as the team's new president, saying he will bring a "new perspective" to the organization 鈥?with an eye toward bringing a Major League Soccer team to the Carolinas.

Glick has spent the past six years working with developing the City Football Group (CFG), a multi-national soccer organization that includes six clubs including current English Premier League champion Manchester City FC. The Group also owns New York City FC of Major League Soccer.

MacIntyre got that right.

Washington owner Dan Snyder’s ownership of the radio station that broadcasts his team’s games has sometimes raised eyebrows. Most notably, when Chris Cooley speculated on the air that then-G.M. Scot McCloughan’s drinking was affecting his job performance.

Now Snyder is getting out of the radio business.

Snyder announced today that he sold The Team 980 to Urban One. Snyder had previously sold smaller stations he owns and now does not own any radio stations.

The Team 980 will continue to broadcast Washington’s games, so the team and the radio station will remain business partners. But according to Liz Clarke of the Washington Post, Snyder wasn’t turning a profit in the radio business, so he wanted to get out and focus his time on his team.

Whether Snyder spending more time on his team translates to more wins remains to be seen. But he’s now out of the radio business.

Joe Bugel and Emmitt Thomas are winners of the 2018 Paul ”Dr. Z” Zimmerman Award given by the Professional Football Writers of America for work as an NFL assistant coach.

Ross' comments Tuesday in a statement released by the Dolphins came after the New York Daily News reported that he said all of the team's players will stand for the anthem in 2018. Ross was in New York on Monday to be honored by the Jackie Robinson Foundation and receive its ROBIE Lifetime Achievement Award.

"I have no intention of forcing our players to stand during the anthem, and I regret that my comments have been misconstrued," Ross said in his statement.

"I've shared my opinion with all our players: I'm passionate about the cause of social justice, and I feel that kneeling is an ineffective tactic that alienates more people than it enlists."

Colin Kaepernick started the NFL anthem movement when he was with the San Francisco 49ers in 2016 to protest racial inequality and police brutality. Yet the Pittsburgh Penguins have proven during their two-year run atop the NHL they know what they’re doing at the other end of the ice, too, playing with a discipline that’s more grit than glamour.

Their hopes for a historic three-peat remain alive because of it.

Guentzel scored twice and the Penguins held Washington star Alex Ovechkin without a shot on goal for just the third time in 107 career playoff games to grind out a 3-1 victory in Game 4 on Thursday night to even their typically taut Eastern Conference semifinal.

Pittsburgh held Washington to three shots total in the third period.

”It’s like we played Game 7 tonight,” said Malkin, who scored from his belly late in the second period to put Pittsburgh in front to stay. ”Unbelievable.”

Well. Not exactly.

This is what tends to happen when the two longtime rivals meet in the postseason. Washington edges ahead and the Penguins respond immediately, one of the main reasons Pittsburgh is 9-1 all-time against the Capitals in the playoffs.

Plenty of work remains to be done for Washington to shrug off the weight of its ignominious history and for the Penguins to push their bid for a three-peat to the next round. Yet Pittsburgh laid down the blueprint over three periods that were decidedly tamer than the Game 3 chaos caused in large part by Washington forward Tom Wilson’s illegal high hit that left rookie Zach Aston-Reese with a broken jaw and led the league to suspend Wilson for three games.

While Sullivan downplayed the impact of Wilson’s absence [url=http://www.washingtonredskinsteamonline.com/trent-williams-jersey]Trent Williams Jersey[/url] , the pushing and shoving was largely kept to a minimum save for a scrap between Pittsburgh’s Kris Letang and Washington’s T.J. For the Penguins, the stakes – as they so often have during Sullivan’s tenure – far outweighed any search for retribution.

”We understood it’s a huge game for us,” Malkin said.

Instead the teams head to Washington for Game 5 on Saturday night all tied up, the ninth time in 11 postseason meetings the series will go at least six games. Same as it ever was.

Oshie scored Washington’s lone goal – a shot from the slot on the power play 12:55 into the second that knotted the score at 1 – and Braden Holtby finished with 21 saves but the Capitals couldn’t sneak anything else by Murray, who stopped 20 shots just two days after putting together an admittedly ”shaky” performance in Game 3.

The guys in front of Murray made his job relatively easy. The Penguins blocked 13 shots and rarely let Washington put together any sustained pressure.

Devante Smith-Pelly replaced Wilson on the top line with Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov, but Pittsburgh kept the clamps on. Ovechkin failed to put a single puck on net, though Washington coach Barry Trotz downplayed Ovechkin’s ineffectiveness.

He’s going to have to if he wants to keep pace with Guentzel. A year after scoring a playoff-high 13 goals while helping the Penguins to a second consecutive Cup, the slender 23-year-old is once again thriving in May.

Guentzel gave the Penguins the lead 9:21 into the second period when he stood on the doorstep and banged home a rebound of Dominik Simon’s shot for his ninth of the playoffs and his 20th point of the postseason. Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier in 1988 are the last two players to reach 20 points in 10 or fewer postseason games.

”I just kind of feel like the (pucks) are going in right now,” Guentzel said.

Guentzel has a league-leading 10 playoff goals, joining Mario Lemieux as the only NHL players to reach double digits in their first two career postseasons.

The 23-year-old, however, is still learning. He committed a slashing penalty after putting the Penguins in front [url=http://www.dallascowboysteamonline.com/zack-martin-jersey]http://www.dallascowboysteamonline.com/zack-martin-jersey[/url] , and Oshie’s shot from the slot 12:55 into the second tied it.

Malkin went to his belly to put Pittsburgh back in front with 2:33 to go in the second. There was no initial goal call on the play, reminiscent of a sequence in Game 2 in which the red goal light remained unlit after Pittsburgh’s Patric Hornqvist jabbed at it from in front.

Replays in Game 2 proved inconclusive and the Capitals held on. This time, the review was kinder to the Penguins. Video clearly showed the puck inching across the line, and it stood after the Capitals challenged claiming goalie interference.

”It’s a good goal, we’re happy,” Malkin said. ”Sometimes it’s a bad call against us. Sometimes it’s a good call. But we’re looking at the next game. We understand it’s not over.”

Linebacker Junior Galette has not signed with a team for the 2018 season and he may not be signing with anyone either.

Galette had 20 tackles and three sacks for Washington last season and missed the two previous seasons after two torn Achilles tendons. He had 22 sacks over the 2013 and 2014 seasons for the Saints.

The Seattle Seahawks released defensive lineman Malik McDowell at the start of training camp Thursday.

McDowell was released with a non-football injury designation, while Elliott failed his physical.

Daniel and Henrik Sedin said goodbye to the hometown crowd with a memorable farewell.

Daniel scored the winning goal in overtime  [url=http://www.greenbaypackersteamonline.com/aaron-jones-jersey]http://www.greenbaypackersteamonline.com/aaron-jones-jersey[/url] , off an assist from twin brother Henrik as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Arizona Coyotes 4-3 Thursday night.

It was the Sedins’ final NHL game at Rogers Arena and a step back in time for the crowd of 18,865 who had one more taste of the elegance and skill the brothers brought to the sport.

A blurry-eyed Daniel tried to describe his feelings when he saw the puck go into the net.

”Relief,” he said. ”I was happy. You couldn’t dream of a better ending in this building, the last time we stepped on this ice.

”It was emotional.”

For Henrik, the Canucks’ captain and franchise leader in points, it was a perfect ending to an emotional week.

”When I woke up this morning I knew it was going to be a big day,” said the older brother by six minutes. ”We tried to enjoy every minute of it.”

Daniel finished with two goals. Henrik also assisted on his first goal in the second period which tied the game 1-1.

The 37-year-old twins from Ornskoldsvik, Sweden, announced Monday they are retiring after playing 17 seasons with the Canucks. Drafted second and third overall in 1997, their final game will be Saturday in Edmonton against the Oilers.

The boisterous crowd at Rogers Arena was on its feet for most of the third period and the overtime. Between ovations there were chants of ”Go Sedins Go” and ”Hall of Fame.”

The anticipation ratcheted up even higher when the Sedins went over the boards after Arizona’s Richard Panik was called for hooking at 1:16 of overtime.

The goal came when Henrik passed back to Daniel, who blasted a shot from the blue line.

The Canucks came off the bench to mob the brothers. Hats littered the ice. Coyote players banged their sticks in recognition.

After the celebration Daniel and Henrik slowly skated around the arena [url=http://www.greenbaypackersteamonline.com/montravius-adams-jersey]http://www.greenbaypackersteamonline.com/montravius-adams-jersey[/url] , waving and clapping to the fans.

Defenseman Alex Edler said it was the kind of finish the Canucks wanted for their teammates.

”It was special for sure,” said Edler, who also assisted on both of Daniel’s goals. ”We talked before the game it was going to be loud. We just fed off that.

”The twins had a great game. They were on fire. It was a perfect ending.”

The first goal was a throwback to the Sedins’ early years.

The play began with Henrik making a move along the boards, then dishing the puck to Edler, who was streaking toward the goal. He passed to Daniel, who shot into an open net.

Both Sedins had season highs of ice time. Henrik logged 21 minutes 36 seconds. Daniel was on for 21:12 and had 10 shots on goal.

Winning the game was just the icing on the cake. Sending the fans home buzzing about a last special performance was the main victory for the Sedins.

”It means something,” Henrik said. ”The way the crowd showed up, right from the warmup.

”To finish off like we did, they can walk away and remember this. If you lose the game 5-1, it’s not fun. It’s a better feeling for us.”

Christian Fischer, Derek Stepan and Dylan Strome scored for Arizona.

Jake Virtanen and Brendan Leipsic got the other goals for the Canucks. Both teams will miss the playoffs.

With Vancouver struggling in the standings [url=http://www.buffalobillsteamonline.com/adolphus-washington-jersey]Adolphus Washington Jersey[/url] , Rogers Arena has often been a quiet building with plenty of empty seats this season. The Sedins’ finale produced the energy and enthusiasm of a playoff game.

Even in the warmups, fans lined the boards waving signs and snapping pictures on cell phones. One woman held up a sign which lit up with the words ”Congrats Henrik and Daniel.”

The first standing ovation came when the Sedins skated out for the national anthems. During the game there were loud cheers each time the Sedins stepped on the ice, anticipation whenever they touched the puck.

The fans almost got their wish 18 seconds into the game when Henrik hit the post.

The standing ovations continued after most whistles during the third period. Daniel and Henrik acknowledged with waves.

Prior to the game there was a video tribute. Past Canucks players and coaches talked about the Sedins’ history, their contributions on the ice and their work in the community. A tribute mural wall was installed outside the arena for fans to write messages. The lights outside Rogers Arena and in many city buildings glowed Swedish blue and yellow in tribute.

During the game some fans chanted ”one more year.” Daniel was asked if there was any chance the brothers would reconsider their retirement.

”No, not at all,” he said. ”I saw our kids up on the Jumbotron (during the game). That made me happy. We will spend more time with them.”

NOTES: Attending the game were the Sedins’ parents and two brothers. . The Canucks gave out their team awards with rookie Brock Boeser the most outstanding player, Alex Edler the top defenseman and Derek Dorsett the unsung hero.

In games where the St. Louis Cardinals hit homers and pitch well, they generally walk off the field with a win.

But on nights where they can’t connect with the long ball, they don’t consistently make up for it with situational hitting or defense. Friday night’s 5-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves was another example of that trend rearing its ugly head.

After failing to cash in leadoff walks in the bottom of the first against Braves starter Julio Teheran, St. Louis simply couldn’t crack the code. It eventually caught up with the Cardinals as they were held to one run for their second straight game.

For St. Louis (42-38) to even the series Saturday night at Busch Stadium, the Cardinals will have to do a better job of converting runners in scoring position into runs while not giving up extra outs defensively. The Cardinals’ three errors Friday night marked their 17th multi-error game in 80 games.

St. Louis is on a pace to commit more than 130 miscues this year [url=http://www.chicagobearsteamonline.com/josh-sitton-jersey]Josh Sitton Jersey[/url] , continuing a three-season trend of below-average defense. Permitting good teams like Atlanta (46-34) four or five outs in an inning is a recipe for disaster.

The Braves started a 10-game road trip with a positive result. Third baseman Johan Camargo was the offensive star, going 3-for-5 with two runs and a two-run double off Jordan Hicks in the eighth that broke open a 1-0 game.

“Baseball is all about its ups and downs,” Camargo said. “For me, it’s all about maintaining the focus and just staying the path.”

Atlanta essentially heeded Camargo’s credo, bouncing back from consecutive series losses against last-place teams Baltimore and Cincinnati. It will turn to left-hander Max Fried (0-2, 4.09 ERA) on Saturday to secure a series win.

Fried is replacing veteran right-hander Brandon McCarthy, who was put on the 10-day disabled list Thursday with a knee injury. A former first-round pick of San Diego, Fried will make his first start since going five innings and giving up one earned run on May 28 in a no-decision against the New York Mets.

It will be the second career appearance against the Cardinals for Fried, who last year tossed a scoreless inning in relief against them.

Right-hander Luke Weaver (4-6, 4.59) will look for his second straight win for St. Louis. Weaver shrugged off a rough first inning Sunday in Milwaukee to grab an 8-2 win, fanning a season-high nine over 5 2/3 innings while yielding two runs off five hits and two walks.

Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia maintained his innocence and his new team said it supported him after a 1996 sexual assault allegation resurfaced.

The Detroit News reported that Patricia and a friend of his were indicted 22 years ago by a Texas grand jury [url=http://www.chicagobearsteamonline.com/cody-whitehair-jersey]Cody Whitehair Jersey[/url] , on one count each of aggravated sexual assault for an alleged incident involving a woman on South Padre Island. The accuser did not testify and the case was dismissed 10 months later.

The Lions hired Patricia after last season to replace Jim Caldwell as coach. He had previously been an assistant with the New England Patriots.

The Lions said a ”standard pre-employment background check” did not turn up the incident. But the team said it was standing by Patricia.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – The Philadelphia Eagles have signed running back Matt Jones to a two-year contract and also agreed to terms on four-year deals with all five of their draft picks.

Jones was a third-round pick by the Washington Redskins in 2015. He had 950 yards rushing and six touchdowns while averaging 3.9 yards per carry in two seasons with the Redskins. He played for the Colts in 2017 and only carried five times. After Indianapolis selected two running backs in the draft, Jones was cut on May 1.

Jones will get a chance to earn a roster spot with the Super Bowl champions in a crowded backfield that includes Jay Ajayi, veteran Darren Sproles and Corey Clement.

BOSTON (AP) – Jayson Tatum caught a pass underneath the basket, shook off a hit and went up for the go-ahead layup with 23 seconds left and the Boston Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers 114-112 to advance to the Eastern Conference finals.

Tatum scored 25 points, Jaylen Brown had 24 and Terry Rozier 17, sinking a pair of free throws after forcing Joel Embiid’s turnover in the final seconds. Al Horford added 15 points and eight rebounds for Boston, which will play Cleveland for the second straight year for a spot in the NBA finals.

Game 1 is Sunday in Boston.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) – Oklahoma City Thunder forward Paul George has had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

The procedure was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles.

George is expected to returning to normal offseason activities in six to eight weeks. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) – The Sacramento Kings have promoted Peja Stojakovic to assistant general manager.

General manager Vlade Divac announced the move to put Stojakovic in a role where he will assist in management of player development, talent evaluation and oversight of the team’s G League affiliate.

Stojakovic spent the past three seasons as an executive with the Kings. He most recently served as vice president of basketball and team development.

Stojakovic was an All-Star three times in seven-plus seasons as a player in Sacramento. He also played for Indiana, New Orleans, Toronto and Dallas in his 13-year career. He was a reserve on the Mavericks‘ championship team in 2011.

NEW YORK (AP) – The Toronto Raptors‘ Dwane Casey was the NBA’s best coach this season, according to his fellow NBA coaches.

Casey was announced as the coach-of-the-year selection by the National Basketball Coaches Association. The award, named for longtime NBCA executive director Michael H. Goldberg, is voted on only by the league’s head coaches.

NEW YORK (AP) – Brett Gardner capped a slump-busting performance with a go-ahead, two-run triple off Craig Kimbrel in the eighth inning, Aaron Judge followed with a homer and the New York Yankees rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 9-6 for their 17th victory in 18 games.

Kimbrel entered with two on and one out to face Gardner seeking the first five-out save of his career. Gardner drilled a full-count pitch into left-center, well over the head of center fielder Mookie Betts, who was playing shallow. Neil Walker scored easily from third and rookie Gleyber Torres raced from first and slid past a lunging tag attempted by catcher Christian Vazquez.

Judge followed with his ninth homer of the season. He had three hits and three RBIs as New York won its eighth straight overall and 11th in a row at home.

Aroldis Chapman pitched the ninth for his ninth save as New York (26-10) broke a tie with Boston for first place in the AL East and has sole possession of the best record in the majors for the first time since July 27, 2012.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – Alex Krushelnyski scored 6:48 into the fifth overtime period and Alex Lyon made 94 saves to lead the Lehigh Valley Phantoms to a 2-1 win over the Charlotte Checkers in the longest game in the American Hockey League’s 82-year history.

The Phantoms, the top affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, took a 3-1 series lead in the Atlantic Division finals by outlasting the Carolina Hurricanes’ farm team in a game that began shortly after 7 p.m. EDT Wednesday night and ended at 1:09 a.m. after more than seven periods and 146 minutes and 48 seconds of play.

The seemingly endless game surpassed the Philadelphia Phantoms’ 3-2 win over the Albany River Rats that took 142:58 to decide in 2008.

The team announced the move Thursday.

Stauskas agreed to the contract quickly after the start of free agency. Even though the NBA’s offseason moratorium does not end until 12:01 p.m. EDT Friday, signings like the deal for Stauskas and the one former NBA MVP Derrick Rose completed with the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday are permitted under the league’s collective bargaining agreement. Short-term minimum-salary signings can be completed before the moratorium is lifted.

Portland will be Stauskas’ fourth team in his five NBA seasons. He’s a career 35 percent 3-point shooter.

Nemanja Bjelica is moving from Minnesota to Philadelphia.

A person familiar with the negotiations says Bjelica has agreed to a one-year contract with the 76ers worth nearly $4.5 million. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday because the deal has not been announced.

Bjelica gives Philadelphia more shooting depth, needed in an offseason where the 76ers lost Ersan Ilyasova and Marco Belinelli.

Bjelica shot 42 percent from 3-point range last season, his best clip in his three NBA years. The 30-year-old Serbian had a long career in Europe before coming to the NBA with Minnesota in 2015.

He was originally drafted by Washington in 2010.

Adam Vinatieri vividly remembers his last game against Morten Andersen.

Andersen had already logged more than 20 seasons in the NFL [url=http://www.giantscheapstore.com/sterling-shepard-jersey-cheap]Sterling Shepard Jersey[/url] , was well into his 40s, nearing the end of his career and still kicking as well as anyone in the league. Back then, Vinatieri marveled at how the seemingly ageless Andersen managed to excel for so long.

Now, more than a decade later, Vinatieri finds himself grinding through his 23rd NFL training camp, hoping to join the NFL's career scoring leader in the Hall of Fame. Andersen was inducted last year.

"I would have liked to have seen a handful more kickers and punters make it in there, but finally getting a second kicker in and Ray Guy getting in, it's good that we have some representation in there because those guys did a lot for the league," the Indianapolis Colts kicker said.

Andersen's induction last year provided hope to specialists such as Vinatieri that they, too, could be headed to Canton, Ohio, one day.

Until Andersen's selection, Vinatieri wasn't sure. The only one other "pure" kicker to earn pro football's highest distinction was Jan Stenerud in 1991. Guy was elected in 2014 [url=http://www.patriotscheapstore.com/duke-dawson-jersey-cheap]Duke Dawson Jersey[/url] , ending the shutout for punters.

Some believe Vinatieri could be next.

His sterling resume glistens with Hall of Fame credentials: four Super Bowl rings, the league record for 100-point seasons (20) and second all-time in career scoring (2,487 points). Anderson finished with 2,544 and Vinatieri needs 58 points to break the record, which could happen at midseason if all goes well.

He owns the career record for scoring in postseason games (234), is the only player to top 1,000 points and make 200 field goals with two teams, has celebrated a league-record 225 victories, including playoffs, and made a league-high 44 consecutive field goals. If Vinatieri completes this season, he would become only the third 46-year-old player to suit up for an NFL team.

His highlight reel contains some of the most memorable kicks in league history: two last-minute field goals to win Super Bowls and the tying and winning kicks in the infamous Snow Bowl, which helped New England win the first of its five Lombardi Trophies. He has been dubbed the best clutch kicker in league history and there's no indication "Automatic Adam" is slowing down.

"It's ridiculous," holder Rigoberto Sanchez said. "It's honestly out of this world, I think. Just how much has Vinatieri seen and done during his career?

Vinatieri joined the league before former teammates Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, still reminds people he once tackled Herschel Walker and acknowledges missing on Desmond Howard and Devin Hester as they returned his kickoffs for Super Bowl scores.

He played for Hall of Fame coaches Bill Parcells and Tony Dungy, in addition to Bill Belichick. His newest coach, Frank Reich, actually threw for 281 yards against the Patriots during Vinatieri's rookie season in 1996.

Somehow, though, he remains the epitome of consistency.

Last year, with a new long snapper and a new holder, Vinatieri still made 85.3 percent of his field goals and scored 109 points and now he's back with his oldest son, A.J., serving as a ball boy at training camp.

Despite the honors, the nicknames and the Hall of Fame predictions, Vinatieri knows he may still need more to follow the kicker he has been watching since his younger days in South Dakota into the NFL's most hallowed halls.

"I don't think it hurts, that's for sure," Vinatieri said. "It's one of those things that I haven't really though too much about it. I'm still just trying to help my team win games and keep on putting chapters in this book and if that happens, fantastic."

There’s been plenty of consternation about the NFL’s new rule against lowering the helmet to initiate contact, but Patriots coach Bill Belichick isn’t sweating it.

Belichick said on WEEI that as far as he’s concerned, there’s no reason for the Patriots to change the way they tackle, because Belichick has always told his players not to lower their heads when making contact.

“It’s not a change for us, for our coaching staff,” Belichick said. “We’ve never taught tackling with the crown of your helmet, putting your head down [url=http://www.giantscheapstore.com/ereck-flowers-jersey-cheap]Ereck Flowers Jersey[/url] , leaning your body forward in that type of position. In an offseason when the new rule has been hotly debated, Belichick is not interested in joining that debate.

The San Francisco 49ers have five picks heading into the final day of the NFL draft.

San Francisco used its first two picks of the draft to get help for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. The Niners took tackle Mike McGlinchey in the first round and speedy receiver Dante Pettis in round two.

The focus shifted to defense in the third round with San Francisco taking linebacker Fred Warner and defensive back Tarvarius Moore.

The Niners could use more help at pass rusher, interior line and possibly tight end.

The San Francisco 49ers have exercised the fifth-year option to keep defensive end Arik Armstead under contract through 2019.

The team announced the move Monday to pick up the option worth about $9 million. The deal is guaranteed for injury and will become fully guaranteed next March.

Armstead was taken 17th overall in 2015. He has six sacks and 56 tackles in 30 career games. Armstead played just six games last year before a season-ending broken hand.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are releasing receiver Allen Hurns and saving $7 million in 2018.

The lawyer representing former 49ers Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid in their collusion case against the NFL is continuing to promise big developments.

Attorney Mark Geragos said on his Reasonable Doubt podcast that big news is coming.

Officials in an Indianapolis suburb that’s home to the Colts‘ summer training camp agreed to pay about $1.1 million over three years toward the NFL team’s hotel rental [url=http://www.vikingscheapstore.com/nick-easton-jersey-cheap]Nick Easton Jersey[/url] , according to records.

Contract documents obtained by The Indianapolis Star through a records request show Westfield officials committed to paying half of the hotel rental bill last year while publicly saying that no city incentives would be used to help lure the Colts. The team is leasing a 152-room Cambria Suites for roughly 30 days each summer to accommodate players, coaches and staff.

The Colts announced in September that they planned to move the team’s training camp to the suburb’s 400-acre Grand Park sports campus. The team’s contract to lease the campus said it would pay the city $653,000 over 10 years. The city was positioned to make an estimated $190,000 per year from parking, food and beverage sales.

Todd Burtron, chief of staff to Mayor Andy Cook, said the contract isn’t misleading and that technically city funds aren’t being used. Money from Hamilton County’s tourism bureau, Visit Hamilton County, will cover the cost, he said.

The tourism bureau gave the city a $313,000 grant to pay for locker rooms at the Grand Park facility [url=http://www.falconscheapstore.com/alex-mack-jersey-cheap]Alex Mack Jersey[/url] , Burtron said. That money will instead be used to help fund the team’s hotel stay this year and city funds were used to cover the locker room expenses, he said.

She said she doesn’t plan to audit or protest how the city used the grant. She also said the bureau hasn’t yet approved any money for Westfield in 2019 or 2020, but wouldn’t rule it out.

That's when coach Sean McDermott escorted the first-round pick to the sideline and introduced him to Jim Kelly in what became a meeting of the team's hopeful future and legendary past.

"I'm still shaking from meeting him," Allen said.

Though Allen grew up in central California and played college at Wyoming, the 21-year-old is very aware of who Kelly is and what he means to Buffalo.

"It's all on the wall," Allen said, pointing the four AFC Championship banners the Kelly-led teams won from 1990-'93.

Allen also knows how tough Kelly is in his ongoing battle with cancer.

The Bills are pinning their hopes on Allen to fill what's been their most unsettled position since Kelly retired following the 1996 season.

Buffalo traded up five spots in the draft order to select him with the No. 7 pick two weeks ago. Allen became just the fourth quarterback selected by Buffalo in the first round, and first chosen in the top 10 of the draft order.

He joins a team once again shuffling starters after Tyrod Taylor was traded to Cleveland in March despite helping Buffalo to a 9-7 finish and end a 17-year playoff drought.

At 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, Allen is a raw, but strong-armed and athletic quarterback. He was a two-year starter at Wyoming, where he completed 365 of 649 for 5,066 yards with 44 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

Allen was knocked for his relatively low completion percentage of 56.2 and mechanics, something he spent working on this offseason.

McDermott isn't providing any guarantees in saying Allen will compete for the starting job with offseason free-agent addition A.J. McCarron and second-year player Nathan Peterman.

"We've got a plan in place for all of our players, and in this case Josh, in terms of bringing them along at the right pace," McDermott said.

Allen threw a few wobbly or high passes to his right. He was far more accurate with passes to his left and over the middle. HOUSTON (AP) – James Harden and Eric Gordon each scored 27 points to lead a balanced attack and the Houston Rockets routed the Golden State Warriors 127-105 to even the Western Conference finals at one game apiece.

The Rockets didn’t trail after the first quarter and led by double digits for most of the night. They head to Oakland, California for Game 3 on Sunday night feeling much better after rebounding from a deflating 119-106 loss in the series opener.

P.J. Tucker added a playoff career-high 22 and Trevor Ariza had 19 as both bounced back after struggling in Game 1. Tucker had just one point in that game and Ariza scored eight, but was limited on defense after collecting his fifth foul early in the third quarter.

MILWAUKEE (AP) – A person familiar with the search tells The Associated Press that the Milwaukee Bucks have reached an agreement with Mike Budenholzer to become the team’s next coach.

The 2015 NBA Coach of the Year will replace Joe Prunty, the former assistant who went 21-16 in the regular season after replacing the fired Jason Kidd in late January.

The person confirmed the agreement with the former Atlanta Hawks coach on Wednesday. The person requested anonymity because the team has not made an official announcement.

The deal was first reported by ESPN.

NEW YORK (AP) – Houston’s James Harden, Cleveland’s LeBron James and Anthony Davis of New Orleans are the finalists for the NBA’s MVP award.

Harden, who led the league in scoring, has twice been a runner-up for the award, including last year when Russell Westbrook won. James has won the MVP award four times.

The winners will be announced on June 25 in Santa Monica, California during the NBA Awards show.

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Jonathan Marchessault scored two goals – including an empty-netter in the closing seconds – to lead the Vegas Golden Knights to a 4-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets in Game 3 of the Western Conference final.

HORSE RACING

BALTIMORE (AP) – Having the Preakness favorite has never bothered Bob Baffert before and it doesn’t bother him with Justify.

Coming off an impressive victory in the Kentucky Derby, Justify is the 1-2 morning-line favorite for Saturday’s second race in a field of eight horses. Derby runner-up Good Magic is the second choice at 3-1, but Justify is the horse to beat with the chance to give Baffert his seventh Preakness winner and a shot at a second Triple Crown in four years after American Pharoah did it in 2015.

Baffert is 4-0 in the Preakness with the Derby winner and doesn’t see any reason Justify doesn’t have another big run in him.

NFL

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) – The Carolina Panthers are off the market.

The Panthers announced they have signed a ”definitive agreement” to sell the team to David Tepper, the founder and president of global hedge fund Appaloosa Management.

The deal is subject to NFL approval.

League owners will meet next week in Atlanta, where they are expected to vote on the purchase. Since Tepper already has been vetted by the league as a minority owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, the approval process is not expected to run into any snags.

The transaction is expected to close in July, the team announced.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Foles was the toast of the town after spectacular performances in the NFC championship game against Minnesota and the Super Bowl victory over New England. He struggled in the next five and some critics suggested Foles should be benched for Nate Sudfeld for the division playoff game against Atlanta. Coach Doug Pederson never lost confidence in Foles, and it paid off when he helped the Eagles win their first NFL title since 1960.

Foles had a 115.7 passer rating, completed 72.6 percent of his passes and threw for 971 yards, six TDs and one interception in the playoffs.

An anemic first quarter of offense set the tone. By halftime, Matthew Stafford and the Lions were trailing, and in the third quarter, they unraveled completely.

The 48-17 loss to the New York Jets on Monday night was a dreadful debut for new coach Matt Patricia and a nightmare for Stafford, who was intercepted four times in a total debacle for Detroit.

"There's not a lot to be happy about," Patricia said.

The Lions fired coach Jim Caldwell after going 9-7 last season. The hope was Patricia could come over from New England's staff and lift Detroit to the next level, but expectations in Motown seemed a bit tempered after an unimpressive preseason.

Monday's rout brought little reason for optimism.

It actually began with a flourish for Detroit when Quandre Diggs intercepted rookie Sam Darnold on the first play from scrimmage and went 37 yards for a touchdown.

"You get a pick-6 on the first thing," defensive tackle Ricky Jean Francois said. "You're on a high and you think everything else is going to go."

Down 17-10 at halftime, Detroit responded by going 75 yards in only four plays, tying the game on Stafford's 24-yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate.

Then the Jets reeled off 31 straight points before the end of the third.

Darnold found Quincy Enunwa for a 21-yard touchdown, quickly restoring New York's seven-point lead. Then Darron Lee intercepted Stafford and went 36 yards for a touchdown. Just 67 seconds later, the Jets scored again on a 78-yard punt return by Andre Roberts. New York capped the quarter when Isaiah Crowell scored on a 62-yard run with 54 seconds left, making the score 48-17.

Lee said the Jets had a read on Detroit's signals. Stafford went 27 of 46 for 286 yards, but it was his first four-interception game since 2013.

Matt Cassel came in at quarterback briefly in the third when Stafford was crunched between two defenders while attempting a pass. The crowd cheered when Cassel went in again with 8:15 left in the fourth, but he threw an interception shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, fans clad in green and white began a chorus of "J-E-T-S Jets! Jets! Jets!" chants that echoed around an otherwise deflated stadium.

"I'm going to be most disappointed in myself. That's where I always start," Patricia said. "I've got to do a better job, and that's always where I'm going to take it."

There was almost nothing for the Lions to feel good about. Kenny Golladay had seven catches for 114 yards. The pass rush managed a couple early sacks after a listless preseason.

But the offense couldn't build on Diggs' early touchdown. Rookie Kerryon Johnson had only five carries, and Detroit ran for just 39 yards. Defensive end Ziggy Ansah left with a shoulder injury.

By the end, Jets fans had set up a celebration in the mostly abandoned sections behind New York's sideline. There weren't many Detroit fans left. At least the empty seats couldn't boo.

Vrana sprung Kuznetsov for a breakaway on Washington’s tying goal 52 seconds into the third and finished off Ovechkin’s pass for the game-winner.

John Carlson and Brett Connolly scored 33 seconds apart in the first period, and T.J. Oshie and Lars Eller added empty-netters late to seal the win and help the Capitals move one victory from advancing to the Eastern Conference final for the first time in the Ovechkin era and first overall since reaching the Stanley Cup Final in 1998.
