Tui Na (pronounced twee-naw) is a term that refers to a variety of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as well as therapeutic manipulations and body work. Tui Na is traditionally used for the treatment of physical and emotional discomforts such as restlessness anxiety, insomnia, depression and anger. It is also utilized to treat and diagnose other ailments, like constipation, asthma, arthritis and asthma. Tui Na is not typically utilized for pleasure and leisure however, it is used as part of the treatment and diagnosis procedure for specific disorders.
Although Tui Na's benefits Tui Na aren't fully understood in Western medicine research has shown that it can aid in the treatment of mild to moderate pain, particularly during times of high stress. Four researchers released a study on 12 patients suffering from stroke who were treated with Tui Na in a July 2021 issue in The American Journal of Sports Medicine. Patients experienced normal symptoms, with low levels of fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Three of the 12 Spasticity patients were treated and showed improvement. Two others did not show any improvements or worsened. There were no differences between groups in treatments effects or time on factors such as pain, functioning, and mood.
Twelve articles on tuina were used to define and draw conclusions by researchers. One was a meta-analysis, the other was a crossover study and the rest were from the actual published article. The meta-analysis was a comparative study between twelve articles published on spasticity, tui na and different formats for reporting. It showed that a statistically significant change in mean, with more significant results for spasticity than for tui nua.
The study of crossover is a an additional analysis that examines the effects of two treatments: physiotherapy and physical therapy, as well as chiropractic therapy on the severity poststroke spasticity of the upper limb. While the difference was not significant, chiropractic care alone had a significantly greater effect than the physiotherapy. A subgroup of patients with progressive and severe disease within a month of their onset , showed a significant treatment effect. Within this subgroup, chiropractic care was superior to any other group. So, the authors concluded that chiropractic care might be beneficial following stroke.
The study that came in third is the largest of its kind, and the most promising. It evaluated Chinese medicine with chiropractic for post-stroke spinal cord stimulation. Both groups had similar symptoms. SCT is a method that causes nerve compression and decreases muscle tone to facilitate recovery. In this procedure needles are inserted into specific points along the spinal column. Both techniques can be beneficial, but the Chinese massage practitioners appear to be superior in terms of pain management and recovery time.
Chiropractors performed the scan with diagnostic imaging software. They then employed hands-on manipulation of the upper and lower limbs as well as the spine. After a four-week treatment period, there was a significant improvement in all areas of the patients studied. Chiropractors had a higher rate of improvement than surgeons. One month later, post-stroke spasticity had decreased. The use of spinal decompression was no longer necessary for most patients. Spinal mobilization didn't cause stiffness or soreness.
Chiropractors had a higher rate of patients treated successfully, but their rate of success was less than surgeons. Chiropractic patients who were randomly assigned to chiropractors showed an overwhelmingly higher rate of complete improvement after the four-week poststroke Spinal Decompression period. In the initial month of treatment there was no significant distinction between the two groups at the postoperative appointment. The random assignment was done to find out which group showed the greatest improvement. The chiropractors were surprisingly more improvement than surgeons both in the preoperative and the postoperative appointments.
The study was conducted by Drs. Maurer, Kornmehl, and Jick, all of whom are acknowledged as leading experts in the field of spinal care. The results of this research are especially notable due to the importance of chiropractic care for the families of stroke victims and patients.
