Corchorus Olitorius Egyptian Spinach is an extremely popular summer crop in our region. It's been known as Molokhia/Molokheiya (and numerous other ways of spelling it) such as salad mallow Jew's mallow, jute mallow and West African sorrel to name just few. It is believed to have been a staple food in Egypt prior to the time of Christ and has been the staple food of Egypt from the time of the Pharaohs. The Egyptian name molokheiya means 'vegetable for the king' according to Wikipedia a sick Egyptian King, in the year 6000 BC, asked for hot soup while sick. After drinking the hot soup daily, his condition was healed. Cleopatra is also said to have taken the same soup. Egyptian Spinach as well as its numerous close relationships are found throughout Africa and the Middle East, India and various parts of Asia. It will grow in most subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world.
It can be grown as an annual. It will grow up to a metre in height, bears small yellow flowers, and produces edible seed pods. The edible leaves can be harvested throughout the year. It is extremely durable and can grow quickly. It is a relative of okra , and it can thrive in many of the same conditions like okra. It does not like shade.

Are you thinking of growing one? It will grow in any soil type and isn't particular about the pH but obviously prefers fertile moist soil. It can even grow in pots. The preparation of the soil is normal. Then, you can plant the seeds right where they will grow. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to plant. In Egypt the leaves are served in traditional soups made with garlic, coriander and meat. In other parts of the world it is made into a stew using rice, cassava, and even chicken meat. There are many recipes available for this plant. The leaves can be dried, and then ground into a tea. After the tea has been prepared, you can put them in a container so that you can make future soups or stews. In Japan it is advertised in the health food store as a healthy tea. Since the time of the Pharaohs, Egyptian spinach has been praised for its health benefits. It is a tea that can increase your immune system. Many of the species in the genus Corchorus are used to produce Jute since they have large, strong fibres that are found in their stalks. Stems were then soaked for some time so that the plant matter could turn brown and the fibers could be easily removed. Then they were washed dried and sorted for use. In some areas it is also possible for this fiber to be used to make paper. Corchorus Olitorius, which is also known as Egyptian spinach, is the best utilized to create Jute. However, some of its relatives can be used for other reasons.
