A survey of Australian supermarket etiquette has uncovered some surprising - and maybe not so surprising - expectations of how you should behave when wandering aisles of your local Aldi, Coles or Woolworths.

And perhaps surprisingly, the most annoying thing to Australian shoppers was a customer going through the express checkout with too many items - with 71 percent of people surveyed listing that as their top complaint.

The next on the list was 'hovering or blocking an aisle' with your trolley for too long, which came in at 63 per cent, closely followed by squeezing an avocado at 53 per cent.

Herbal Essences spokesperson Eunice Tan said that their company encourages people to smell their products before buying but asked people to do so in a sensible manner.

'Herbal Essences wants Aussies to feel liberated to 'crack the cap' before buying their shampoo and conditioner and really explore and discover the right scents for them,' she said.

'We do ask that people crack the cap responsibly.'

Naturals haircare brand Herbal Essences commissioned the research to launch Crack the Cap - a campaign encouraging consumers to 'crack the cap' and indulge in 'scents you can't forget'.
